While waiting for his resentencing in a Miami jail, Antonio Guerrero, one of the Cuban Five, wrote a poem (click here to read the poem) describing what he sees, hears and feels during the week he spent in the “hole.” Antonio writes in describing his routine: “once again tiny yellow pencil.” With this tiny yellow pencil, “accorded” by the prison authorities from time to time, Tony’s voice, and that of the other Cuban Five, goes out to millions of people around the world: heads of state, international personalities and organizations and people from all walks of life that are increasingly discovering the truth about this case.

His writing and his paintings show that this is a man of profound convictions, honest, transparent, peaceful and sensitive to the problems of the people, even putting that concern before his own intolerable conditions under which he has been suffering for over eleven years.

In addition to all the water-tight proof and arguments presented by his brilliant and persistent lawyer Leonard Weinglass, all other legal and political personalities from Cuba and all over the world, the products of the tiny yellow pencil are a majestic condemnation of the lies and disinformation used by the US legal and political system against Tony. The US authorities put the Cuban Five through a kangaroo court over eleven years ago and through the same subterfuges have kept them in penitentiaries for all this time, mostly in the “hole” or lock-down; in two cases without the right of visits from their respective wives. The result of putting the tiny yellow pencil to paper, in the form of this simple but profound poem and other writings, shows that they are innocent. Here we have before us men of culture, persisting in defending personal and political convictions focused on opposing terrorist activities against their own people and organized from the south of Florida such as from Miami. They are not spies. They did not in any way put US security in danger.

Tony describes with the tiny yellow pencil the confinement of his cell. He also, with the most profound insights, paints a poetic portrait of the outside world (Miami) that he observes from the window in the “hole” where he was kept. The streets of Miami surrounding the jail! This is the Miami in which a real terrorist Luis Posada Carriles, responsible for the bombing of a Cubana Airlines flight off the Barbados coast killing 73 innocent people, walks the streets. The Miami streets are the host to this Washington-protected terrorist who is also responsible for the death in a Havana hotel of Fabio Di Celmo, an Italian-Canadian, as part of the US policy to disrupt the Cuban tourist industry.

Tony’s poem, revealing both his humanism and the cruelty of his confinement as is the case of the four others, amounts to a powerful appeal to President Obama to use his constitutional right to pardon in order to free the Cuban Five immediately. There are many events and incidents in the history of a country such as the US and of an individual such as President Obama. However, the fate of the Cuban Five is a litmus test of whether the claim for change is, or is not, sincere. No one can seriously and with a straight face look at the peoples of the world and talk about change, while five innocent men, whose only crime is opposing terrorism, linger in jail. No one can talk about opposing terrorism while refusing to concede to the Venezuelan demand for Carriles’ extradition in order to stand trial. Tony has the little yellow pencil. President Obama has access to a pen. He can use it, and with the stroke of this pen, free the Cuban Five now. As long as Obama does not do so, the little yellow pencil will continue to reverberate from the cell to the whole world, Tony’s words spreading to all corners of the planet, including the USA, with the help of the supporters of the Cuban Five.

Esperando su nueva sentencia en una cárcel de Miami, Antonio Guerrero, uno de los Cinco Cubanos, escribió un poema (haga clic aquí para leerlo) describiendo lo que ve, oye, y siente durante la semana que pasó en el “hueco.” Antonio escribe al describir su rutina; “otra vez diminuto lapicito.” Con este diminuto lapicito  “otorgado” por las autoridades de la prisión de vez en cuando, la voz de Tony, y la de los otros Cinco Cubanos, llega a millones de personas alrededor del mundo: jefes de estado, personalidades y organizaciones internacionales, y gente de todo tipo quienes crecientemente están descubriendo la verdad sobre este caso.

Sus escritos y pinturas muestran que es un hombre de profundas convicciones, honesto, transparente, pacífico y sensible ante los problemas del pueblo, aún anteponiendo esa preocupación a las propias condiciones intolerables bajo las cuales ha estado sufriendo por más de once años.

Además de todas las pruebas y argumentos irrefutables presentados por Leonard Weinglass, su abogado brillante y persistente, todas las personalidades políticas y legales de Cuba y el resto del mundo, los productos de este diminuto lapicito son la majestuosa condenación a las mentiras y desinformación que en contra de Tony son usadas por el sistema legal y político de los Estados Unidos. Las autoridades de los Estados Unidos hace once años hicieron pasar a los Cinco Cubanos por una farsa de juicio y usando los mismos subterfugios los han mantenido en penitenciarías por todo este tiempo, mayormente en el “hueco” o bajo encierro (lock-down); en un par de ocasiones privándolos del derecho a recibir la visita de sus respectivas esposas. El resultado de llevar este diminuto lapicito al papel en forma de un poema simple pero profundo y de otros escritos, muestra que son inocentes. Aquí tenemos frente a nosotros a hombres cultos que persisten en defender convicciones personales y políticas enfocadas en oponerse a las actividades terroristas en contra de su pueblo y organizadas desde el sur de Florida, como ser Miami. No son espías. No han puesto en peligro en modo alguno la seguridad de los Estados Unidos.

Tony describe con este diminuto lapicito el confinamiento de su celda. Así también pinta con profunda perspicacia un poético retrato del mundo exterior (Miami) al cual observa desde la ventana del “hueco” donde lo han tenido. ¡Las calles de Miami que rodean a la cárcel! Este es el Miami donde un verdadero terrorista, Luis Posada Carriles camina por sus calles, a pesar de ser responsable por la explosión en pleno vuelo de un avión de Cubana de Aviación que despegaba de la costa de Barbados matando a 73 personas inocentes. Las calles de Miami son anfitrionas de este terrorista protegido por Washington quien es también responsable por la muerte en un hotel de la Habana, de un ciudadano ítalo-canadiense, Fabio Di Celmo, como parte de la política de los Estados Unidos de trastornar la industria cubana de turismo.

El poema de Tony, el cual revela su humanismo y la crueldad de su confinamiento, como así la de los otros cuatro, representa una poderosa apelación al presidente Obama a que use su privilegio constitucional de emitir perdones para así dejar en libertad inmediatamente a los Cinco Cubanos. Hay muchos eventos e incidentes en la historia de un país como los Estados Unidos y de un individuo como el presidente Obama. No obstante el destino de los Cinco Cubanos probará si la promesa de cambio es o no sincera. Nadie puede mirar al mundo seriamente y con expresión honesta diciendo que hay cambio cuando cinco hombres inocentes, cuyo único crimen es oponerse al terrorismo, permanecen en la cárcel. Nadie puede hablar de oponerse al terrorismo cuando se niega en cumplir la demanda de Venezuela de extraditar a Carriles para así enjuiciarlo. Tony tiene un diminuto lapicito. El presidente Obama tiene un bolígrafo a su alcance. Puede usarlo y con un trazo de su bolígrafo conceder ya la libertad a los Cinco Cubanos. Mientras que Obama no lo haga el diminuto lapicito continuará reverberando desde la celda hacia todo el mundo, las palabras de Tony desparramándose a todos los rincones del planeta, inclusive los Estados Unidos, con la ayuda de los partidarios de los Cinco Cubanos.
