Dear compañeras and compañeros:

With profound sadness and pain, we learned last night of the death of beloved compañero Sergio Corrieri. On behalf of the National Committee to Free the Cuban Five, we extend our sincere condolences to his family, his comrades in the Institute for Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), the Communist Party of Cuba and the Cuban people.

It is hard to believe he has died, for in life he had an outstanding presence in Cuba’s struggle from the early days of the Revolution, to which he gave himself completely. His essential participation during the Special Period—such a difficult but also heroic epoch of the Cuban people—will always be remembered.

In those days when Cuba depended on international solidarity and at the same time never failed in extending its internationalist solidarity to other peoples, Sergio was a memorable ambassador of friendship and brotherhood, with a dignity and moral strength that inspired everyone.

As President of ICAP, his encounters and presentations of friendship and solidarity with tens of thousands of people who traveled to Cuba, helped greatly in strengthening that friendship and solidarity between Cuba and the peoples of the world.

Sergio contributed tremendously to the creation of a popular and revolutionary culture. Who best could have interpreted the personage of Alberto Delgado Delgado—that heroic and anonymous symbol of the clandestine struggle—if not Sergio Corrieri, in the film “The Man of Maisinicú?” And yet, despite the fame that he acquired through his artistic activity, what stood out about Sergio’s humanism was his modesty.

I remember the first time I met him, when he headed the delegation of The Escambray Theater in San Francisco, California in 1983, where they presented the play, “Ramona.” It was a beautiful experience for us in the Cuba solidarity movement to be able to share those days with Sergio and all the compañeros of the troupe.

We bid a sad farewell to beloved compañero Sergio. He will live on in our memory and our commitment to fight for the freedom of the Five and in defense of the Cuban Revolution.

Queridos compañeras y compañeros:

Con el más profundo dolor y tristeza, nos enteramos anoche del fallecimiento del querido compañero Sergio Corrieri. De parte del Comité Nacional para la Libertad de los Cinco Cubanos, extendemos nuestra sincera condolencia a su familia, sus compañeros del ICAP, del Partido y al pueblo cubano.

Es difícil creer que haya fallecido, quien en vida tuvo destacada presencia en la lucha de Cuba desde los primeros días del triunfo de la Revolución, a la cual se entregó por completo. Su imprescindible participación durante el Período Especial—una época tan difícil pero también tan heróica del pueblo cubano, será siempre recordada.

En esos días cuando Cuba dependía de la solidaridad internacional y al mismo tiempo no dejaba de extender su solidaridad internacionalista a otros pueblos, Sergio era el embajador memorable de la amistad y hermandad, con una dignidad y fuerza moral que inspiró a todos.

Como Presidente del ICAP, sus intercambios y discursos de amistad y solidaridad, con las decenas de miles de personas que vinieron a Cuba ayudó grandemente a fortalecer esa amistad y solidaridad entre Cuba y los pueblos del mundo.

Sergio contribuyó tremendamente en la creación de la cultura popular y revolucionaria. ¿Quién hubiera podido interpretar mejor el personaje del compañero Alberto Delgado Delgado, símbolo heróico y anónimo de la lucha clandestina—sino fuese Sergio Corrieri, en El Hombre de Maisinicú? No obstante, de la fama que adquiriera debido a su actividad artística, Sergio destacó su humanismo por medio de su modestia.

Recuerdo la primera vez que lo conocí, cuando lideró a la delegación de El Teatro Escambray en San Francisco, California en 1983, presentando la obra “Ramona”. Fue una hermosa experiencia para nosotros en el movimiento solidario con Cuba, haber podido compartir esos días con el compañero Sergio y todos los compañeros del teatro.

Tristemente nos despedimos del querido compañero Sergio. Vivirá para siempre en nuestra memoria y nuestro compromiso a la liberación de los Cinco y en defensa de la Revolución Cubana.

Amigos y familiares:

Trabajador incansable por la solidaridad, Sergio Corrieri, con su esfuerzo al frente del ICAP, con su sensibilidad y pasión revolucionaria, contribuyó decisivamente a la creación de más de 300 Comités de Apoyo a la causa de nuestra liberación alrededor del mundo.

A sus compañeros del ICAP y especialmente a sus familiares, llegue en este momento triste el abrazo de Antonio, Gerardo, Ramón, René y el mío propio.

La victoria segura en esta batalla por la justicia y nuestro regreso a la Patria, será también un homenaje al combatiente revolucionario que fue Sergio Corrieri.
