On March 7 and 8, expert witnesses, attorneys and family members of the Cuban Five, gave powerful testimony before an audience of 250 people at the prestigious Law Society in central London, to argue for the immediate freedom of the three Cuban Five members still in U.S. prison.

René González was scheduled as the key witness but the British government denied him a visa, telling him that as an ex-prisoner who served more than four years in prison, it was sufficient grounds to deny entry into England.

That was precisely the reason he needed to come to London, to explain how each day of his more than 13 years of prison was wrongly imposed! Still, René's truth rang through the hall as the judge-commissioners and audience listened intently to him via Skype.

The Commissioners were: Zakeria Mohammed Yacoob, former Justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa; Philippe Texier, former Judge, French Court de Cassation; and Yogesh Kumar Sabharwal, former Chief Justice of India. Presiding were Professor Sara Chandler, Chair, Human Rights Committee of the Law Society of England and Wales; and Elizabeth Woodcraft, attorney and author, of Great Britain.

Cuban Five attorneys Phil Horowitz and Martin Garbus, gave details of the egregious denial of the Five's rights to a fair trial by the U.S. government's misconduct and poisoned political atmosphere in Miami. Garbus also presented a 558-page document to the Commissioners outlining the U.S. government's illegal and secret payments to prominent Miami reporters who worked to condemn the Five through their highly prejudicial coverage. The document is a product of the National Committee to Free the Cuban Five's research of the last five years, and contains Garbus's important affidavit on behalf of Gerardo. Gerardo Hernández's affidavit of his innocence on the false conviction for murder conspiracy is also included. Attorney Peter Schey spoke of the U.S. government's refusal to produce vital satellite images of the shoot-down of Brothers to the Rescue planes on Feb. 24, 1996. The shoot-down was falsely pinned on Gerardo Hernández and is the reason he is serving a draconian double-life sentence.

A women's panel on the second day of the Commission, coincided with International Women's Day, and emphasized the hardships that the mothers, wives and children of the Five have endured, and their supreme dedication to their loved ones' freedom. Featured were Irmita González, daughter of René; renowned author Alice Walker; Diana Holland, Assistant Gen'l Secretary of UNITE union; Mirta Rodríguez, mother of Antonio Guerrero; and Kenia Serrano, president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples. Olga Salanueva, wife of René González, Elizabeth Palmeiro, wife of Ramón Labañino, and Adriana Pérez, wife of Gerardo Hernández, gave moving testimony in other sessions.

Among the many others who spoke were family members of victims of anti-Cuba terrorism, Margarita Morales, whose father died in the 1976 bombing of Cubana flight 455 (73 people were murdered by terrorists Luis Posada Carriles and Orlando Bosch), Betina Corcho, whose mother, a Cuban diplomat, was murdered by a terrorist bomb directed against Cuba in Portugal, and Roberto Hernández Caballero, investigator of terrorist crimes committed against Cuba. Former Cuban National Assembly president Ricardo Alarcón, former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark, and vice-president of Europe's Parliament Miguel Angel Martínez headed a panel.

A grand concert Friday night highlighted famed Cuban musicians Eliades Ochoa and Omara Portuondo. Alice Walker and other personalities filled Barbican Hall. A closing dinner on Saturday gave recognition to convenors and organizers Cuba Solidarity Campaign and the Belgian organization Iniciativa Cuba Socialista, and to British unions UNITE and UNISON, among others.

A preliminary conclusion was read at the conclusion of the Commission, to resounding applause and standing ovation. The final report will be sent to President Barack Obama. Congratulations to the organizers and everyone involved for this vitally important event!

Cuban Five rally in London's Trafalgar Square

Numerous organizations held a lively and militant Cuban Five solidarity rally in London's Trafalgar Square, Sunday, March 9, the day after the conclusion of the Commission.

Hundreds of people heard the speeches and received literature of the Five's heroic mission and campaign for their freedom. The action was initiated by the British group Rock Around The Blockade. The National Committee to Free the Cuban Five, Free the Cuban 5 Vancouver, Cubans living in Europe, and Colombian and Bolivian organizations participated, among others.

El 7 y 8 de marzo en Londres, testigos expertos, abogados y familiares de los Cinco Cubanos, dieron testimonios contundentes ante una audiencia de más de 250 personas en la prestigiosa Sociedad de Derecho, abogando por la liberación inmediata de los tres miembros de los Cinco todavía en prisiones de Estados Unidos.

René González estaba previsto para ser el testigo principal, pero el gobierno británico le negó una visa, diciéndo que, como persona encarcelada por más de cuatro años, era razón suficiente para negarle entrada a Inglaterra.

Eso era precisamente la razón por la cual necesitaba venir a Londres, para testimoniar que, ¡cada día de sus 13 años de prisión fue injustamente impuesta! No obstante, la verdad de René llenó la sala mientras le escuchaban los comisionados y la audiencia por medio de Skype.

Abogados de los Cinco, Phil Horowitz y Martin Garbus, dieron detalles del amañado juicio del gobierno EEUU, y las violaciones por el gobierno y la atmósfera envenenada de Miami durante el proceso. Garbus presentó un documento a los comisionados detallando el papel de los periodistas miamenses quienes recibieron pagos ilegales y secretos de Washington. Los reporteros trabajaron para condenar a los Cinco con su cobertura altamente perjudicial. El documento es producto de las investigaciones del Comité Nacional por la Libertad de los Cinco por más de 5 años, y contiene el importante afidavit de Garbus en apoyo a Gerardo. El afidavit de Gerardo Hernández, mostrando su inocencia en cuanto a la falsa condena por conspiración de cometer asesinato, también está incluida. Gerardo fue falsamente atribuido a conspirar a derribar los aviones y es la razón principal por su sentencia de doble cadena perpetua.

Un panel de mujeres el segundo día de la Comisión coincidió con el Día Internacional de la Mujer, sobre las dificultades experimentadas por los Cinco y por las madres, esposas e hijos de los Cinco, y de sus esfuerzos supremos por la liberación de sus seres queridos. Hablaron Irmita González, hija de René; la reconocida autora Alice Walker; Diana Holland, segunda Secretaria General del sindicato UNITE; Mirta Rodríguez, madre de Antonio Guerrero; y Kenia Serrano, presidenta del Instituto Cubano por la Amistad con los Pueblos. Adriana Pérez, esposa de Gerardo Hernández, Elizabeth Palmeiro, esposa de Ramón Labañino y Olga Salanueva, esposa de René González, dieron testimonio conmovedor.

Entre los oradores en la Comisión fueron familiares de las víctimas del terrorismo contra Cuba: Margarita Morales, cuyo padre murió en la voladura del avión de Cubana de Aviación en 1976 (73 personas fueron asesinados por los terroristas Luis Posada Carriles y Orlando Bosch), Betina Corcho, cuya madre, diplomática cubana, fue asesinada por una bomba terrorista dirigida contra Cuba en Portugal, y Roberto Hernández Caballero, investigador de crímenes terroristas contra Cuba. Ricardo Alarcón, ex-presidente de la Asamblea Nacional de Cuba, Ramsey Clark, ex-fiscal general de EEUU y Miguel Angel Martínez, vice-presidente del Parlamento Europeo, dirigieron un panel.

El viernes por la noche se estrenó un gran concierto, con los famosos músicos Eliades Ochoa y Omara Portuondo, y también Alice Walker y otras personalidades ante cientas de personas en el auditorio Barbican. Una cena de clausura el sábado dio reconocimiento a los organizadores, Campaña de Solidaridad con Cuba y la organización belga Iniciativa Cuba Socialista, y a los sindicados británicos UNITE y UNISON, entre otros.

Una conclusión preliminar fue leida en la clausura de la Comisión, y recibida con ovación y aplausos de aprobación. El reporte final será enviado al Presidente Barack Obama. ¡Felicidades a todas las personas responsables por este evento tan imprescindible!

Mitin en apoyo a los Cinco en la Plaza Trafalgar

Numerosas organizaciones participaron en un militante mitin de solidaridad con los Cinco en la famosa Plaza Traalgar en Londres, el domingo 9 de marzo, día después de que concluyó la Comisión. Cientas de personas escucharon el mensaje y recibieron literatura sobre la misión heróica de los Cinco y la campaña por su libertad. La acción fue iniciada por la organización británica Rock Around The Blockade. Entre las organizaciones que participaron fueron el Comité Nacional para la Libertad de los Cinco, Vancouver Free the Five, cubanos viviendo en el exterior, grupos colombiano y bolivianos, etc.
