Chicago, IL, April 5-May 4, 2013: "From My Altitude," Prison Artwork by Antonio Guerrero and Oscar Lopez Rivera

Location: Calles y Sueños, 1900 S. Carpenter (between Halsted & Racine), Chicago, IL 60608
Time: 4-7 M-F, 10-3 Sa-Su, plus events listed below
Cuba considers the Five Cubans jailed and abused by Washington the most important issue in U.S./Cuba relations. The Five –on a mission to infiltrate, thwart, and expose “anti-Castro” terrorists operating out of Miami– were seized by the U.S. government, demonized as “spies,” sentenced to terms up to double-life, thrown into ‘super-max’ prisons, and denied spousal visits.
But the Five are fighters, not victims. They’ve stood strong and become heroes to millions around the world, backed by such figures as Nelson Mandela and former U.S. President Carter.
Two have also used prison time to become accomplished artists, including Antonio Guerrero whose paintings are being featured at Calles y Sueños. We’re also honored to include four paintings by Oscar López Rivera, Puerto Rican nationalist and longest-held political prisoner in the Western Hemisphere.
Please join us for the events below –and call to organize class or personal visits to the exhibit.

Date: Sat. April 20, 6:30 pm
Location: Steelworkers Hall, 25 Cecil St., Toronto
Organized by: The United Steelworkers and The Friends of the Cuban Five
More information:Heide Trampus 416-431-5498 or Elizabeth Hill 416-654-7105
Adriana Pérez, wife of one of five Cuban intelligence officers arrested and sentenced to long prison terms in the United States for their efforts to monitor violent anti-Cuba groups in Miami, will be speaking at a special event in Toronto at the Steelworkers Hall, 25 Cecil Street, on Saturday, April 20.
Pérez is married to Gerardo Hernández, one of the men known as the Cuban Five. Sent to Florida in the mid-1990s to infiltrate anti-Castro organizations involved in a wave of terrorist activities against Cuban citizens, the five were exposed, arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit espionage. After a widely condemned trial, Hernández and the others – Ramón Labañino, René González, Antonio Guerrero Rodríguez and Fernando González – were sentenced in 1998 to excessive jail terms in difficult conditions.
Hernández was given the harshest punishment, two life terms plus 15 years. Pérez will speak about his case and the U.S. government’s continual refusal, in violation of international standards, to allow her to visit her husband. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. and admission is free. Since their arrests a world-wide campaign to free the Five has attracted the support of international politicians and personalities, including many in Canada. The trial and sentences have been criticized by the United Nations and various human rights organizations as unjust.
The event is being hosted by the United Steelworkers and the Friends of the Cuban Five. For more information or to arrange interviews with Adriana Pérez, contact Keith Bolender at 905-760-9684.

TORONTO, ON, SEPT. 21-23, 2012: Breaking the Silence Peoples’ Tribunal & Assembly
Almost 14 years ago, the Cuban Five – René González, Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Ramon Labañino and Fernando González – were falsely charged and wrongly convicted in a Miami courtroom of "conspiracy to commit espionage" against the U.S. on behalf of the Cuban government. Ever since the unjust conviction, the five Cubans have been held in separate U.S. prisons, often in solitary confinement.
In fact, the politically-motivated trial and conviction of the Cuban five had nothing to do with threats to U.S. security. The Cuban Five never conspired to commit espionage. They were on a mission to monitor and report on violent groups in Miami that are well known by the U.S. government to be responsible for terrorist acts against the Cuban people.
For more than 50 years, hundreds of attacks have been launched against Cuba by these extreme right-wing groups, whose aim is the violent overthrow of the Cuban government. Their campaign of bombings, assassinations and other attacks has left 3,478 Cubans dead and 2,099 seriously injured.
The Cuban Five were peacefully trying to do what U.S. law enforcement authorities have refused to do - prevent terrorism.
This horrific injustice against the Five has provoked an unprecedented campaign in the U.S., Canada and around the world to demand that their convictions be overturned and that they be granted immediate release.
As part of this international effort to achieve the freedom of the Cuban Five, a number of trade unions and solidarity groups from across Canada, in coordination with the Canadian Network on Cuba and La Table de concertation de solidarité Québec-Cuba, are convoking a Peoples' Tribunal & Assembly on September 21-23, 2012 in Toronto, to shed new light on this egregious injustice and to build a broad public campaign to demand their freedom.
The Peoples' Tribunal & Assembly aims:
- to act as a forum for education and for launching an appeal to get justice for the Cuban Five;
- to break the silence of the mainstream media about this case; and
- to map out the next steps of a broad and united campaign on the Cuban Five in Québec and across the rest of Canada.
The Peoples' Tribunal, composed of prominent Canadian and international panelists, will hear from expert witnesses before rendering a ruling. Although the Tribunal's ruling will not be legally or judicially binding, it will carry moral force and suasion of the outrage of concerned people across Canada and internationally.
Witnesses will testify to the suffering caused to the Cuban people and to others as a result of all the terrorist attacks against Cuba and Cuban interests. They will testify to the unjust trial in Miami, the U.S. government's covert payments to journalists covering the trial, the horrendous sentences given to the Cuban Five and the violation of international law by the United States government regarding the inhumane treatment they have endured, the denial of visitation rights to family members and the U.S. government's harbouring and protection of self-confessed anti-Cuban terrorists.
The Peoples' Assembly will serve to develop and adopt an extensive plan of action to pressure the Canadian government to join the international demand urging U.S. President Obama to use his authority to immediately release the Cuban Five and allow them to return to their homeland.

Tucson, AZ, July 8, 2012: Community Meeting to Learn About Fernando GonzÁlez
A hero is in our midst...
Come to an afternoon community meeting in Tucson to learn about Fernando González, who has been unjustly imprisoned by the U.S. government. He has recently been transferred to Safford minimum security prison, 110 miles east of Tucson.
Sunday, July 8, 4 pm
Southside Presbyterian Church
317 W. 23rd St., Tucson AZ
Fernando González is one of the Cuban Five, five political prisoners who have been imprisoned since 1998 by the U.S. government. They were charged and convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage and other charges. In reality, the Cuban Five were on a mission in Miami to protect the public — both in Cuba and the United States — from terrorist attacks. For more than 50 years, Cuba has suffered from U.S.-financed anti-Cuba terrorist organizations that are based in Miami.
There is a movement of people across the United States and around the world, campaigning for the freedom of the Cuban Five. The Cuban Five are men of great honor and pride, having dedicated themselves to save people’s lives, in their active opposition to terrorism.
There will be a brief presentation by Gloria La Riva, coordinator of the National
Committee to Free the Cuban Five, followed by a short video and discussion.
Come learn about the Cuban Five, and share your thoughts!
We are thankful to the Southside Presbyterian Church for making their facilities available.

Featuring poets Papoleto Melendez, Sandra Maria Estevez, Louis Reyes Rivera
and Film: Will the real terrorist please stand up by Saul Landau
This film chronicles half a century of hostile US-Cuba relations by telling the story of the “the Cuban five”, intelligence agents sent to penetrate Cuban exile terrorist groups in Miami and now serving long prison sentences. The film highlights decades of assassinations and sabotage at first backed then ignored by the very government that launched a “war against terrorism.” In the film, viewers see leading terrorists, now in their 80s, recounting their deeds, and Cuban state security officials explaining why they infiltrated agents into violent Miami exile groups. The film, featuring Danny Glover and 84 year old Fidel Castro in key scenes, raises and tries to answer the question: what did Cuba do to deserve such hostile treatment?
Join The Popular Education Project to Free the Cuban 5 for our Artist benefit for Rene Gonzalez. Our goal is to raise money for his transition from prison to the outside.
Let Rene know that New York City loves him! Come out and enjoy this amazing afternoon of art, food, and film!

Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labanino, and Rene Gonzalez, better known as the Cuban Five, have been unjustly imprisoned for almost 13 years simply for informing the US Government of the plans of a Miami based terrorist group to attack Cuba, their homeland. These men have been, at times, isolated in prison without reason, relatives have faced tremendous obstacles when visitation requests were made and some family members have been denied visas thus making it impossible for them to visit at all. Despite all this, the five continue to hold on to shreds of hope. Transcending their environment, these men have become artists, poets and philosophers.
On July 16, we will witness the beauty, humor and wisdom these men have developed while in prison, when the traveling art exhibit “Desde Mi Altura” by Cuban 5 artist Antonio Guerrero opens at the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center.
Readings of poetry written by Guerrero and other members of the Cuban Five will be performed by local poets and actors at the exhibit opening. Live music and a DJ will provide inspiring music and refreshments will be provided.

Time: 8:30 a.m.- 1:15 p.m.
Location: The University of California Washington Center, 1608 Rhode Island Ave. NW, Washington, D.C
President Obama’s easing of travel restrictions and the new measures permitting Americans to send money to Cuban citizens are vitally important steps toward a U.S. Cuban policy that serves U.S. interests, as present policy has not. Our original conference agenda had called for these travel restrictions to be removed. We are delighted that they have been and have revised the conference agenda accordingly. But we must build on these steps to move relations with Cuba in a positive direction. Lifting the embargo requires congressional approval and that will not come easily. The process should begin, but meanwhile there are other steps not requiring congressional approval that could and should be taken as soon as possible. These include removing Cuba from the terrorist list, closing Radio and TV Marti and halting programs aimed at destabilizing other governments. All are discussed in the conference agenda below.
Wayne Smith will speak about the Cuban Five.

Miami, FL, July 10, 2010: Car Caravan Against Terrorism
Date: Saturday, July 10
Time: 11:00 a.m.
Location: Participants will start gathering at 11 AM at the parking lot of the Youth Fair, the entrance of which is at the light of Coral Way and S.W. 112 Avenue, Miami. At noon the caravan will leave to drive throgh Westchester´s main avenues.
The arrest of Chavez Abarca in Venezuela — a terrorist sought by Interpol and long time associate of another home grown terrorist, Luis Posada Carriles — proves that Cuban-American terrorists are still planning terrorist acts while free here in Miami.
We are demanding that the Federal Government arrest, charge, and try these well known Cuban-American terrorists for their crimes.

Toronto, ONT, Apr. 17, 2010: Free the Cuban Five & End the Blockade Rally
SATURDAY, APRIL 17th
1:00 PM
Across from the U.S. Consulate, 360 University Ave.
On the Occasion of the Commemoration of the First Military Defeat of U.S. Imperialism in Latin America
- Bay of Pigs* (Playa Girón), Cuba. 1961 -
We invite the friends of Latin America, Palestine, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and all others who have been subjected to imperialist aggression, as well as all those who strive for peace, to join us in demanding freedom for the Cuban Five who selflessly risked their own lives, to prevent terrorist attacks.
While terrorists such as Posada Carriles and Orlando Bosch, who masterminded the bombing of a civilian airliner in midair, murdering all 73 people aboard, continue to walk freely on the streets of Miami, the Cuban Five -Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González, Ramón Labañino, Gerardo Hernández and René González- are in U.S. prisons since Sept. 12th, 1998, for defending Cuba’s sovereignty and consequently also exposing the hypocrisy of the U.S. government and its allies, in their “war on terror”.
WE DEMAND: FREE THE CUBAN FIVE and END THE BLOCKADE NOW!
*On April 17th, 1961 the U.S. sent about 1,500 CIA-trained mercenaries to invade the Bay of Pigs (Playa Girón) on the southern coast of Cuba, in an attempt to overthrow the Cuban Revolution. By April 19th, in less than 72 hours, THE U.S. EMPIRE HAD BEEN DEFEATED!!! The Cuban Revolution and the mobilization of the Cuban people led by Fidel Castro, had been grossly underestimated and, in the end, 200 mercenaries were killed, 1197 others were captured and the failed invasion cost U.S. taxpayers over $46 million.

Location: Poelaertplein, 1000 Brussels, next to the Palace of Justice
Last year, Five known Flemish actors in collaboration with Free the Five Committee Belgium, decided to fight for the liberation of the Cuban Five. They wanted to use their fame in Belgium to convince the public opinion to react against this injustice case. On the 12th of September, the day of 11th year of imprisonment for Gerardo, Hernando, Ramón, René and Fernando, they will try to attract the attention of everyone to lock themselves up in a self-made prison with the slogan "Join the Cuban Five". Most US citizens abhor the shame of the American establishment in the gross violation of human rights in the arrest, detention, conviction and imprisonment of the Cuban 5. Also, the rest of humanity has signed up to the campaign for the release of these patriots who were victims of fighting terrorism, for which US wants to be celebrated as the leading crusader in the fight against international terrorism.
But Nigeria has been an exception. Our voice is missing in the campaign. Even under military rule in the 70s through 80s, the Nigerian State and the Nigerian people (as represented by patriots and several progressive organizations) were united in the struggle against Apartheid and its condemnation as „a crime against humanity‰. Cuban did so much to the cause of Africans in the liberation of the Southern African countries of Angola, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and South Africa. Thus, it was not surprising that when Hilary Clinton (US Secretary of State) visited Nigeria recently, no question was posed on the violation against human rights being perpetrated at the global stage by the US. We in the Amilcar Cabral Ideological School (ACIS) want to assume that Nigerians are yet aware of the issue of the Cuban 5 as they were in the struggle against Apartheid.
Towards this end, the Amilcar Cabral Ideological School (ACIS) is organizing this event as a clarion call to all Nigerian patriots and their progressive organizations to sign up to the campaign to free the Cuban 5. There is no better time to join this campaign than now when the Barrack Obama US presidency is seeking to change the face of US foreign policy in its pursuit of an agenda of peace and reconciliation of strained relationship caused by past US policy of aggression against sovereign nations, such as the case with the Cuban 5.
Please be part of this historic event to add your voice. Be part of the millions of voices of Nigerians to demand justice for the Cuban 5. As Nigerians, we cannot remain indifferent.

Salanueva is the wife of Ren Gonzalez, one of the five Cubanpatriots who were in Florida in the 1990s to monitor right-wing groups that have a history of carrying out deadly attacks on Cuba. The five were arrested in September 1998 and convicted in a frame-up trial. They have now been in jail for more than ten years. In the week of June 15-22, the U.S. Supreme Court will decide whether to accept a petition to review an appeals court decision against thefive. Among the 145 people at the international youth conference was Annalucia Vermunt, who lives in Auckland and has participated in actions here building support for the five. The conference resolved to step up efforts to build the defence campaign. At this meeting, Vermunt will report on the conference and the fight to free the Five.

New York, NY, June 8, 2009: Demonstrate to demand "Free the Cuban Five NOW!"
Monday, June 8th
3:30-6:30pm
New York City Federal Building
26 Federal Plaza, Manhattan
(4, 5, 6, J, M, Z, R, W to City Hall or A, C, 1, 2, 3 to Chambers)
Join us on the streets of New York City June 8 to demand that Washington Free the Cuban Five Now! Currently the U.S. Supreme Court is deciding whether or not to review the case of the Five. A decision is expected in the third week of June.
Since their arrest in Miami in September of 1998, the Five — Fernando González, René González, Antonio Guerrero, Gerardo Hernández, and Ramon Labañino — have been locked up in U.S. prisons. At the time, the Five were in Miami monitoring right-wing Cuban organizations with a long record of organizing violent attacks against Cuba. At the time of the Five’s mission there had been a series of terrorist bombings at Havana hotels organized out of Miami. Since the triumph of the Cuban Revolution in 1959 over 3500 Cubans have died in terrorist attacks organized from organizations based in the United States. Cuban government officials repeatedly urged the Clinton Administration to move against these rightist organizations. Instead Washington arrested and framed up the Cuban Five on unproved and unprovable “espionage” charges.
Lacking hard evidence to support their main charges, the U.S. government charged them with a series of “conspiracy” charges, including conspiracy to commit espionage. The five were convicted in 2001 in Miami in a blatant political frame-up trial. (Read this recent telephone interview with Gerardo Hernández to get a better feel for what’s involved in this case: http://www.freethefive.org/updates/IntlMedia/IMSaulGerardo41609.htm )
June 8th we will send a strong message to the U.S. government and President Obama to release these five Cuban political prisoners immediately!
This action organized by the July 26th Coalition is part of a call for International Days of Action June 6-8. Protests will be organized across the globe on those days to raise awareness of this case and demand freedom for the five. The call was issued by the Second International Youth Summit in Solidarity with the Cuban Five held in Havana May 11-12. At that gathering, 145 delegates, representing 42 countries and 86 organizations came together to discuss how to advance this international struggle.
Our voices are also strengthened by a record number of 12 “friend of the court” briefs filed with the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of the Cuban Five. The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, National Lawyers Guild, National Conference of Black Lawyers, and 12 Nobel Peace Prize Laureates are among the groups that filed briefs. They are very useful reading to get a feel for the legal, civil liberties, and fairness issues at stake in this struggle. All of the briefs are available at: http://www.freethefive.org/resourceslegal.htm
We will also be demanding immediate visas for the families of the Cuban Five to visit them in U.S. prisons until they are free. Olga Salanueva, wife of Ramon Labañino, and Adriana Pérez, wife of Gerardo Hernández, have not been allowed the elementary right to visit their husbands in prison for the past ten years. They have been denied visas to enter the United States nine times by the U.S. government. This act of psychological torture is a clear violation of basic human rights and is part a long record of assaults on the rights of the five men, including brutal and arbitrary punishment, by the U.S. authorities aimed at breaking them.
This mobilization is part of our continuing struggle to break the media silence, educate and mobilize around this case. Join us at the Federal Building June 8 and let’s expand the campaign to win freedom for the Five

Sacramento, CA, May 13, 2009: Celebrate 50 Years of the Cuban Revolution
Wed., May 13, 7:00-9:00 pm
Coloma Community Center
4732 T Street
Sacramento, CA
The Sacramento Community Forum will celebrate 50 years of the Cuban Revolution with a movie, speeches and cultural performances.
The movie, "Mission against Terror," is a critically acclaimed film by Bernie Dwyer and Roberto Ruiz Rebo. The film raises the question: why are people who fight terrorism imprisoned in the U.S. while known terrorists are allowed to walk the streets of Miami freely? It follows the case of the five Cubans currently serving long sentences in U.S. jails for trying to prevent terrorist attacks on Cuba. It also depicts the long history of violence against innocent Cubans by right-wing groups based in Miami that are supported by the U.S. The movie, a joint Cuban/Irish production completed in 2005, is 48 minutes long. The film is in Spanish with English subtitles.
The speakers will include George McAdow, long time anti-war and social justice advocate, and Eric Vega, professor of Ethnic Studies at CSUS.
A five dollar donation is requested, but no one will be turned away due to lack of funds.l

We also recognize that December 9th marks 27 years since the beginning of the unjust attempt by the U.S. government to frame up social justice journalist and activist, Mumia Abu-Jamal for the murder of a police officer in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mumia, who has been on death-row since 1982 is innocent and the Free the Cuban 5 Committee-Vancouver, will be commemorating his heroic struggle for justice at our protest this month as well.
