Posada Carriles pleads not guilty to chargesby Louie Gilot Suspected Cuban terrorist Luis Posada Carriles pleaded not-guilty today to naturalization fraud and making false statements in naturalization proceedings at a court hearing in El Paso. Posada, 78, was indicted Jan. 11 of lying to immigration officials reviewing his petition for U.S. citizenship by telling them he had entered the United States illegally through Brownsville with the help of a migrant smuggler in March 2005, when he had actually entered the country by sea with other anti- Castro militants who are also now under indictment. Posada's El Paso lawyer Felipe Millan said there won't be much happening in the case before the resolution of another case involving Posada. Posada, who has been in immigration custody in El Paso since May 2005, is expecting to hear a ruling by U.S. District Judge Philip Martinez on his writ of habeas corpus seeking his release from jail by Feb. 1. Posada did not ask for bond today since he is currently in custody at the Otero County Jail in New Mexico, where Millan reported he was "not doing well." "He is in an isolation cell, away from the general population. But what's worse is that the light is on 24 hours a day. He is not allowed to communicate with anybody except his lawyer," Millan said. Millan said he is getting ready to review 400 pages of evidence from the fraud and false statements case. Indicted co-conspirators Santiago Alvarez and Osvaldo Mitat, who were allegedly with Posada on the boat from Mexico, also appeared in federal court in El Paso today. They obtained a postponement of their arraignment and bond hearings. They have been charged with contempt of court for refusing to talk to the court about their trip with Posada. They are currently serving prison time for weapons conspiracy charges stemming from a separate Miami investigation. Posada faces up to 10 years in prison for the fraud count and up to five years in prison for each of six counts of false statement. Posada, a former CIA operative, is accused by the governments of Cuba and Venezuela in the 1976 bombing of a Cuban jetliner that killed 73 people in Venezuela. |
Continúa la farsa en El PasoPosada Carriles se declara inocente de fraude migratorio23 de enero de 2007 EL PASO, Texas, 22 de enero.— El terrorista Luis Posada Carriles, responsable del atentado contra un avión civil cubano que dejó 73 muertos en 1976, y de la preparación y realización de otras acciones contra Cuba y su máximo líder, se declaró cínicamente inocente este lunes de fraude migratorio y falso testimonio en la ciudad de El Paso, Texas. Despachos de prensa dados a conocer anoche en la Mesa Redonda Informativa, señalan que el abogado del reo, Felipe DJ Millán, pidió que se aplazara la audiencia de fianza hasta después del 1ro. de febrero, plazo que tiene el gobierno norteamericano para justificar su detención por cargos migratorios. Agregó que "el gobierno ha presentado más de 400 páginas de evidencia para el caso criminal", y que necesitaba tiempo para analizar los documentos, según reportes de AFP. Las leyes norteamericanas disponen que Posada Carriles podría ser mantenido indefinidamente tras las rejas si es encartado por cargos de terrorismo, pero la fiscalía estadounidense se ha abstenido de hacerlo, precisamente por los vínculos que en esas actividades ha tenido el criminal con autoridades de ese país. Luis Posada Carriles, quien está actualmente encarcelado en una prisión en Nuevo México, llegó al tribunal federal en El Paso bajo fuertes medidas de seguridad, custodiado por agentes del Servicio de Alguaciles. El terrorista está acusado de fraude migratorio y falso testimonio, por haber mentido en una solicitud de ciudadanía al decir que entró ilegalmente a Estados Unidos por la frontera con México en marzo del 2005, cuando realmente lo hizo por mar en el barco Santrina, con varios compinches terroristas. También este lunes fueron sometidos a ese tribunal el benefactor en Miami de Posada Carriles, el terrorista Santiago Álvarez, y un empleado suyo, Osvaldo Mitat, acusados de desacato por negarse a testificar en su contra en el caso de delito migratorio. Ambos cumplen cárcel por un arsenal clandestino de armas de guerra que se proponían utilizar en acciones armadas contra Cuba. Álvarez y Mitat estuvieron entre quienes recogieron a Posada Carriles en Isla Mujeres, frente a Cancún, en marzo del mismo año, y lo trajeron a bordo del Santrina a la Florida, Estados Unidos. |
