Fidel Was Right about Posada All Along

Fidel Castro was right all along: terrorist Luis Posada Carriles had entered the United States on board the "Santrina". The Cuban leader had denounced it as such from the very beginning, following the criminal’s taking of refuge in the United States. Washington, meanwhile, resorted to distancing itself from the truth.

For the Cubans it does not come as news, but the fact is that Fidel’s assertions regarding how Posada had entered the United States—which spokespersons of the Bush administration and members of the Cuban-American ultra rightwing mafia, tried to deny and discard—have now been confirmed by none other than the Justice Department of the country that had hired, trained and protected the terrorist in the first place, the same man they now label a threat to public security.

A federal grand jury in Texas has formally indicted Luis Posada Carriles, on seven charges that include fraud in the naturalization process and six others related to providing false information during interviews with immigration officials.

An official statement by the US Justice Department affirms that Posada lied repeatedly about his entry into the United States, which took place in March, 2005, and that he had particularly lied regarding the transportation routes and methods used and who had accompanied him on the trip.

"In fact, Posada entered the United States by sea aboard the motor vessel "Santrina" accompanied by four individuals," says the indictment. The Attorney General’s Office let nearly a year go by before it publicly acknowledged that the Cuban president was right when he challenged the US government to prove otherwise.

The Yucatan daily Por Esto avoided impunity when it published the news. Posada traveled on the "Santrina", a vessel in the service of the Cuban-American mafia in Miami, the same one that’s also behind the traffic of people and drugs through Mexican waters and territory. Santiago Alvarez Fernandez-Magriña and Osvaldo Mitat, both with a long record of terrorist actions, were Posada’s hosts on board the "Santrina" and later harbored him in Miami.

On April 11, 2005, 19 days after the terrorist had illegally entered United States, Fidel Castro challenged the White House to say whether they were hiding Posada or not. He reminded President George W. Bush of his words on August 26, 2003: "if you harbor a terrorist, if you feed a terrorist, if you try to hide a terrorist, you, yourself, are just as guilty as the terrorist."

The Cuban president continued to demand that the US government answered whether they were hiding Posada or not. Meanwhile, the terrorist was being harbored in Miami, from where countless attacks and assassination plots against Cuba have been hatched.

What kind of president has the United States got, who allows a terrorist monster responsible for the mid-air explosion of an airplane with 73 people on board and who had explosives to blow up the auditorium at the University of Panama, which could have killed hundreds of people, to be in their country in a safe haven?

What kind of security can the US people have with a president like that? What’s the use of all those security bodies, all the intelligence agencies, a machinery that costs hundred of billions of dollars, if they were not aware of the presence of Posada Carriles in the US?

These were among the questions posed by Fidel. And there were many others. Yet, all of them went officially unanswered. Posada Carriles is now facing seven charges, but none of them for the lives lost in the bombing of the Cubana airplane, or for the death [during a hotel bombing in Havana] of [Italian tourist] Fabio di Celmo, among other murders committed by Posada during his long career, under the protection of the United States.

Even if they prosecute him for the charges presented against him, and even if they sentence him for those crimes, Fidel would continue to be right.

The United States will never prosecute Posada for being a terrorist, because the US would then have to be brought before justice for its own crimes against Cuba.

FROM LIES TO SILENCE

Fidel Castro’s accusation that the terrorist Luis Posada Carriles had illegally entered the United States caused hysteria in Washington.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice stated that her government did not have any evidence of the presence of Posada in the United States and that it was presumably an invention of the Cuban intelligence. By then the criminal had spent the first month of his stay in Miami.

Condoleezza’s deputy then, the undersecretary for Hemispheric Affairs, Roger Noriega, called it a Cuban-made maneuver, while State Department spokesman Richard Boucher craftily evaded responding to Fidel's assertions by referring the question asked by journalists to other departments, especially those of Homeland Security and Justice, whose spokespersons remained equally silent.

Around that time, Boucher had said curtly that there are some "reports" that Posada was in the United States, but that the issue of his "exact location" was a matter for other relevant authorities. By then, Posada had already appeared before the press in Miami.

Kevin Whitaker, responsible for the Cuban Desk at the State Department, responded to the head of the Cuban Interests Office in Washington, Dagoberto Rodriguez, that he did not have information on the presence of Posada Carriles in the US. Whitaker repeated the argument that Fidel Castro’s assertions were unreliable. These and other characters in the US ended up supporting the plot to support Posada, together with the Cuban-American mafia in Miami, who welcomed and harbored the criminal, and who keep silence today.

AND WHAT ABOUT FOX?

"I think that the Mexican government ought to talk about the case," Fidel said then, after it had been revealed that the "Santrina" had been in the Isla Mujeres, Mexico. Of President Vicente Fox, he said that "all I ask is that he explains to me, that he clarifies, that he provides all the details, the exact hours, how long they [Posada and his accomplices] were there" in the Mexican Caribbean area. The Fox administration did little to honor the prestige of the Mexican nation, giving ambiguous answers that even went against statements made by the then Navy Secretary, who acknowledged that the terrorist had been in his country.

El Comandante en Jefe siempre tuvo la razón. El terrorista Luis Posada Carriles entró en el Santrina a territorio norteamericano, y eso lo denunció Fidel desde los primeros días en que el criminal gozaba de refugio en Estados Unidos, aunque Washington siempre evadió la verdad.

Para los cubanos no es noticia, pero aquella afirmación del líder de la Revolución, que personeros de la administración de Bush y de la mafia anticubana trataron de desmentir o desvirtuar, hoy es confirmada por el Departamento de Justicia del país que contrató, entrenó y fue cómplice de quien ahora reconoce como una amenaza para la seguridad pública.

Un gran jurado federal de Texas presentó acusación formal contra Luis Faustino Clemente Posada Carriles, por siete cargos que incluyen fraude en el proceso de naturalización y seis por dar información falsa durante las entrevistas ante oficiales de inmigración.

Una nota oficial del Departamento de Justicia afirma que Posada mintió varias veces acerca de su ingreso a Estados Unidos, ocurrido en marzo del 2005, en particular respecto a las rutas de transporte, los métodos utilizados y sobre quiénes le acompañaron en la travesía.

"Sabemos que entró en el Santrina con cuatro individuos", afirma el texto de la fiscalía, que demoró casi un año en reconocer públicamente el emplazamiento del Presidente cubano al gobierno de la potencia que se ufana de lanzar guerras a nivel global contra el terrorismo.

El diario yucateco Por Esto les estropeó la impunidad al dar la noticia. Posada viajó en el Santrina, embarcación que ha estado al servicio de la mafia de Miami, la misma que organiza tráfico humano y de drogas a través de las aguas y territorio mexicanos. Santiago Álvarez Fernández-Magriñá y Osvaldo Mitat, de extenso expediente terrorista, fueron anfitriones en el Santrina y le dieron cobija en Miami.

El 11 de abril del 2005, cuando el asesino de Barbados tenía 19 días de haber entrado ilegalmente a Estados Unidos, Fidel emplazó a la Casa Blanca a responder si escondía o no a Posada.

Fue en el Palacio de las Convenciones, donde el Comandante recordaba al presidente George W. Bush sus palabras del 26 de agosto del 2003: Si alguien protege a un terrorista, si alguien apoya a un terrorista, si alguien alimenta a un terrorista, es tan culpable como los terroristas.

Que el gobierno de Estados Unidos responda si esconde o no a Posada Carriles, exigía Fidel en esa y otras comparecencias, mientras el terrorista estaba refugiado en Miami, allí donde se han organizado incontables planes de agresión y muerte contra nuestro país.

¿Qué clase de presidente tiene los Estados Unidos que permite que un monstruo terrorista que hizo estallar en pleno vuelo un avión con 73 personas a bordo y llevó explosivos para hacer volar el Paraninfo de la Universidad de Panamá, con lo cual hubieran podido morir cientos de personas, esté en su país a buen recaudo?

¿Qué seguridad puede tener el pueblo norteamericano con un presidente así? ¿Para qué sirven todos los cuerpos de seguridad, todos los órganos de inteligencia, la maquinaria que cuesta cientos de miles de millones de dólares, si no sabían que allí estaba Posada Carriles?, eran las preguntas de Fidel.

No fueron las únicas, pero todas quedan sin respuesta oficial. Posada Carriles encara siete cargos, pero ninguno por las vidas truncadas en el vuelo de Barbados, tampoco por la de Fabio di Celmo, amén de otros crímenes cometidos en su largo prontuario bajo la sombrilla protectora de Estados Unidos.

Aun si lo procesan por los cargos presentados, y aun si lo condenaran a las penas que, según las leyes, de ese país corresponden por esos delitos, Fidel seguiría teniendo la razón.

Estados Unidos no va a enjuiciar nunca a Posada Carriles por terrorista, porque tendría entonces que poner ante el fiel de la justicia sus crímenes contra Cuba.

De la mentira al silencio

La denuncia realizada por Fidel sobre la entrada ilegal a Estados Unidos del terrorista Luis Posada Carriles provocó histeria en Washington.

La secretaria de Estado norteamericana, Condoleezza Rice, afirmó que su gobierno no tenía evidencia de la presencia de Posada en Estados Unidos y que ello presumiblemente era un invento de la inteligencia cubana. Para entonces el criminal cumplía su primer mes de estancia en Miami.

Su adjunto de entonces, el subsecretario para asuntos del hemisferio, Roger Noriega, dijo que se trataba de una maniobra de manufactura cubana, mientras el portavoz del Departamento de Estado, Richard Boucher, evadía responder los emplazamientos de Fidel y ante cada pregunta de los periodistas los remitía a otras carteras, en especial a las de Seguridad Interna y de Justicia, cuyos voceros también hacían mutis.

Por aquellos días, Boucher respondía lacónicamente: "hay algunos informes de que se encuentra en Estados Unidos, pero sobre el lugar exacto donde está es cuestión de otras autoridades competentes". Sin embargo, Posada ya había comparecido ante la prensa de Miami.

Kevin Whitaker, responsable del Buró Cuba del Departamento de Estado, respondió al jefe de la Oficina de Intereses de Cuba en Washington, Dagoberto Rodríguez, que no tenía información sobre la presencia de Posada Carriles en ese país y repetía la tesis de que las afirmaciones del Comandante en Jefe eran poco confiables. Estos y otros personajes fueron al final parte del complot, junto con la mafia de Miami, que acogió al criminal, y hoy guardan silencio.

¿Y Fox qué?

"Pienso que el Gobierno de México debe hablar sobre el caso", decía Fidel por aquellos días, tras revelarse que el Santrina había estado en Isla Mujeres, en territorio azteca. Y al presidente Vicente Fox le reclamaba: "solo le pido que me explique, que esclarezca, que dé todos los detalles, horas exactas, quiénes fueron, qué tiempo estuvieron¼ " Posada y sus compinches en el Caribe mexicano. La administración de Fox hizo poco honor al prestigio de su nación, con respuestas cantinflescas que llegaron incluso a desmentir al entonces secretario de Marina, quien reconoció la estancia del terrorista en su país.
