Antonio, Maruchi, and Tony

I’ve been in Colorado since March 17, accompanied by Tony my nephew, to visit my brother in his Florence prison. Visits are on weekends, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We have had two weekends together and let me tell you that we have enjoyed these encounters a lot. My brother looks very well physically; his health is good and he shows optimism and strength, pinning his hope on the new process before the US Supreme Court.

In spite of the tense environment there, I must take mental notes, because we aren’t allowed to have a piece of paper or a pencil. Toñito always has jokes to tell and we laugh. We have even sung some songs from our youth, I mean, that of my brother and I.

On Saturdays and Sundays, there’s an officer with a camera, and we have some pictures taken as a keepsake, and we enjoy that too.

Max Prison in Florence has a very strict regime and since last year it has been even stronger, due to many incidents occurred there, serious insubordination, and all inmates pay for it, according to regulations. Tony, for example, has a record of excellent behavior. He continues his work of teaching Math, English and Spanish to help other inmates who need it and now he wants to be transferred from that prison, based on his conduct, but that doesn’t depend on him, because it should be approved at a higher level by the US Bureau of Federal Prisons.

Well, you know that the probabilities are few, since it’s a case in which law and reason are worthless and hatred and political revenge predominate.

On the other hand, he continues his painting projects and his poetry full of love and strength, which helps him a lot to keep his mind busy and offer this self-taught art to those for whom it can be useful. He also answers, little by little, hundreds of letters coming every day from Cuba and other parts of the world.

All of you are of course present in these encounters, our friends in solidarity accompanying us in this struggle for ten years now, and who represent the greatest hope to achieve justice. We talk about the activities and actions carried out, the contacts we have with you and that you also have with them, because you are the most important thing in this battle for their return. If it wasn’t for the solidarity of so many friends we wouldn’t be hopeful that justice will be done. That’s why we need to redouble those efforts at this time when the petition to re-examine the case is pending before the Supreme Court.

We should also continue to demand the rights of relatives to entry visas, mainly for

Adriana Pérez, Gerardo’s wife. They haven’t been able to see each other for 11 years, and her visa has been denied nine times. The same thing happens with Olga Salanueva, René’s wife. This violates all laws and human rights regulations.

On behalf of our families and of the Cuban Five we express our infinite gratitude to all friends from around the world for their dedication to the release of Tony, René, Fernando, Gerardo and Ramón, and especially on behalf of my mother, who struggles every day for this return, for having her son at home.

It’s an everyday struggle, and we must have a bearing in the United States.

Desde el pasado 17 de marzo estoy en Colorado, en compañía de mi sobrino Tony, para visitar a mi hermano en la prisión de Florence. Las visitas son los fines de semana, viernes, sábado y domingo, ya hemos tenido dos fines de semana y les cuento que hemos disfrutado mucho estos encuentros. Mi hermano se ve muy bien físicamente, su salud es buena y con mucho optimismo y fortaleza, con la esperanza en el nuevo proceso ante la Corte Suprema.

Durante las visitas yo soy quien lleva las anotaciones en la mente porque, no podemos tener ni un pedazo de papel ni lápiz, a pesar de las tensiones del lugar y el ambiente allí. Tonito siempre le tiene chistes y reímos. Hasta hemos cantado algunas canciones de nuestros años de juventud, digo, los de mi hermano y yo.

Los sábados y domingos viene un oficial con una cámara de retratar y hacemos algunas fotos para que queden los recuerdos y eso también lo disfrutamos.

La prisión de Max de Florence tiene un régimen muy estricto y desde el año pasado ha sido aún más fuerte, debido a muchos incidentes que han ocurrido allí de indisciplinas graves y pagan justos por pecadores, según el reglamento. Tony, por supuesto, tiene un expediente de excelente conducta, sigue su trabajo de dar clases de matemática, inglés y español para ayudar a otros presos que lo necesitan y está queriendo tener un traslado de esa prisión, basado en su conducta, pero eso no depende de él, porque debe ser aprobado a instancias superiores del Buró de Prisiones Federales de EE.UU.

Bueno, ya saben ustedes que las probabilidades son escasas por tratarse de este caso donde no valen la ley ni la razón, sino que predominan el odio y la venganza política.

Además él sigue sus proyectos de pinturas y poemas llenos de amor y firmeza, lo que le ayuda mucho a mantener su mente ocupada y brindar este arte autodidacta a quienes les sea útil. También responde poco a poco cientos de cartas de Cuba y muchas partes del mundo que le llegan a diario.

Es claro que en cada uno de nuestros encuentros están presentes ustedes, los amigos solidarios que nos acompañan en esta lucha ya por más de diez años y que significan la mayor esperanza para lograr la justicia, hablamos de las actividades, las acciones que se realizan, la comunicación que tenemos con ustedes y ustedes con ellos también, porque ustedes son lo mas importante en esta batalla por su regreso; si no tuviéramos tantos y tantos amigos solidarios no tendríamos esperanza en que se haga justicia, por eso en estos momentos que el caso está pendiente de decisión si se aprueba o no que la Corte Suprema lo admita para su revisión, necesitamos redoblar esos esfuerzos.

También debemos seguir exigiendo por el derecho de las visas de los familiares, principalmente para Adriana Pérez, la esposa de Gerardo. Desde hace más de 11 años no han podido verse y le han negado la visa nueve veces. Lo mismo ocurre con Olga Salanueva, la esposa de René. Esto viola todas las leyes y reglamentos de los Derechos Humanos.

En nombre de nuestras familias y de los Cinco les agradecemos infinitamente a los amigos del mundo su dedicación por la liberación de Tony, René, Fernando, Gerardo y Ramón, y en nombre de mi mamá especialmente, que lucha cada día por este regreso, por tener a su hijo en casa.

La lucha es de todos los días y tenemos que incidir en Estados Unidos.
