Ukrainian Activists Demand Freedom for Cuban Five

Feb 9 , 2007
Reprinted from Cuban News Agency

Thousand of flyers demanding the immediate release of five Cuban antiterrorist fighters unjustly held in US were distributed among students and professors from Ukraine's National Aviation University on Tuesday.

The leaflets were handed out by members of the Ukrainian Committee in solidarity with the Five at the entrance of the educational center, reports Granma newspaper.

The activists called for support of the cause of Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labanino and Rene Gonzalez, internationally known as the Cuban Five.

The Five were arrested by the FBI in 1998 for infiltrating right-wing Cuban American organizations based in Miami which have carried out terrorist actions against the island over the last four decades.

Despite the antiterrorist character of their mission, they were charged by the US authorities. A biased trial held in the city of Miami punished the Five with extremely harsh sentences.

After near 9 years of imprisonment, most law experts around the world agree there are no legal grounds to keep the Five imprisoned. (ACN)
