Lvov joins the campaign for the liberation of the Five

LVOV, UKRAINE— On Sat. Dec. 8, 2007 two coordinators of the National Ukrainian Committee For the Freedom of the Five Cuban Heroes traveled to Lvov, 600 km west of Ukraine’s capital Kiev, and 70 km from Poland’s border. We arrived at 6:30 that day during a cold rain that also accompanied us as we left that evening. In spite of the early hour, we we were received in the house of an old friend of Cuba.

At 10 am, the leadership of the Local Veterans Association of the October Missile Crisis of 1962 and we had the opportunity to meet with close to 60 members of that social organization in Lvov. The meeting was an opportunity for the presidency of that association to give some recognitions to outstanding members of the organiation and for us to give interviews on the local television station, as well as to the “Ukraine Today” newspaper, which gave extensive coverage to the meeting.

Manuel López, coordinaator of the Ukraine Solidarity committee with the Cuban Five, read a message from the Cuban Ambassador to Ukraine, Julio Garmendía, followed by a presentation that he gave on the history of the Five’s case and the current situation that the Five are in with regards to that unjust judicial process, which they face so valiantly.

At the initiative of one of the veterans of the association, a resolution in solidarity with the freedom campaign of the Five was read, which said in part, “... We, internationalist combatants, demand that the U.S. government grant immediate freedom to Gerardo, Ramón, Antonio, Fernando y René ...”. It was unanimously supported by everyone present in the room, and was personally signed by all to send to the U.S. Congress.

The documentary, “Homeland or Death” in Russian language, which relates the story of the Cuban Revolution and in particular the work of the Commander-in-Chief. One of the veterans asked that a message be transmitted to Cuba, and he submitted photos that were taken during that epoch, of himself with our Commander-in-Chief and Raúl.

The second meeting was at 12:30 pm on the same day, with the Regional Committee of the Ukrainian Communist Party, whose headquarters are in Lvov. We were received by the First Secretary and a group of members of the party. As with the first event, we were able to carry out a satisfactory program. Manuel read the message of the ambassador and he answered several questions on themes related to Cuba, the five, the blockade and Che. We showed the documentary, “Mission Against Terror,” about the Five and the terrorist actions carried out by the Miami Mafia against Cuba.

During the meeting a constitution of the Committee to Free the Cuban Five for the province of Lvov was produced, for the forming of the 17th committee thus far in Ukraine. Those who participated in this formation included the Communist Party of Ukraine, the Union of Women Workers, “For the future of the Ukrainian children,” the Workers Union of Ukraine, Intellectuals for Socialism, and the Union of Soviet Officials in Ukraine.

Part of the resolution read, “... We join the movement of international solidarity and demand that the U.S. government free the Five Cuban Heroes immediately...”

The event was covered by the editorial chief of the newspaper, “Vilna Ukraine,” the press organ of the UCP in Lvov.

Upon ending the program of events in Lvov, at 3:30 pm, we were received by the local representatives of the “Fund for the Care of the Children of Chernobyl,” where we were also able to exchange information with the participants about the Five and other aspects of interest about Cuba. After reading the message of the Cuban Ambassador, we showed the documentary, “Chernobyl is Us,” which tells the story of the Cuban program of medical care for the children affected by the Chernobyl catastrophe, and there was an update on the current situation with that mission.

The three encounters were accompanied by the Cuban flag, and placards about the Five, and Cuban music, ending with the Cuban national anthem. This helped to create the atmosphere as a backdrop for the goals we set out to meet this day: to establish contacts in defense and support for the freedom of our Five Heroes in particular, and to form ties of friendship and solidarity with Cuba, as well as to exchange information on other themes like the U.S. blockade of Cuba and other themes related to the island.

In each one of thte meetings we distributed literature about the Five’s cause and the struggle for their liberation, as well as books on the life and works of the Commander-in-Chief, and examples of the book, “Cuba for Always”, by Natalia Rasinskaya, journalist and commentator on Ukrainian TV, who is from Lvov and a great friend of Cuba.

We consider these meetings to have been very good and positive. Besides informing everyone thoroughly about the Cuban reality today, we achieved an understanding and support for the cause of the Five, and it helped us establish relations with Lvov, for future collaboration with those organizations, which are close to the history of the Cuban revolution. The activities were carried out in an atmosphere of mutual understanding, solidarity and deep friendship.

LVOV, UCRANIA — El sábado 8 de Diciembre de 2007 dos de los coordinadores del Comité Nacional Ucraniano “Por la liberación de Los Cinco Héroes Cubanos” viajamos a la ciudad de Lvov, ubicada a 600 al occidente de Kiev, capital de Ucrania, y a unos 70 Km de la frontera con Polonia. Llegamos a las 6:30 am de ese día bajo una fría lluvia que también nos despidiría de regreso esa propia noche. A pesar de la hora temprana, fuimos recibidos y postriormente acogidos en la casa de un viejo amigo de Cuba.

A las 10 am nos recibió la dirección de la Asociación Local de Veteranos de la Crisis de Octubre de 1962 y tuvimos la oportunidad de reunirnos con cerca de 60 miembros de esta organización social de Lvov. El encuentro sirvió de marco para que la presidencia de la asociación entregara algunos reconocimientos a miembros destacados de la misma y para ofrecer entrevistas nuestras a la Televisión de la localidad, así como a la corresponsal del periódico “Ucrania en el tiempo”, que ofrcieron total cobertura al encuentro.

Manuel López, coordinador del Comité de Solidaridad con los Cinco en Ucrania, leyó un mensaje del embajador extraordinario y plenipotenciario de la República de Cuba en Ucrania, Julio Garmendía, y seguidamente, hizo una amplia reseña de la historia del caso de los Cinco y la situación actual en que se encuentra el amañado proceso judicial que dignamente enfrentan.

Por iniciativa de uno de los veteranos miembros de la asociación, fue leida una resolución solidarizándose con la campaña por la la liberación de Los Cinco, en la cual se señala que “... Nosotros, combatientes internacionalistas ... exigimos al gobierno de los EEUU la liberación inmediata de Gerardo, Ramón, Antonio, Fernando y René ...”. La misma fue unánimmente apoyada por todos los presentes en la sala, que también acordaron firmarla personalmente y enviarla al Congreso de los EEUU.

Como colofón del encuentro, se proyectó el documental en idioma ruso “Patria o Muerte”, que narra la historia de la revolución Cubana y en particular la obra del Comandante en jefe. Uno de los veteranos pidió trasmitir un saludo a Cuba y entregó fotos suyas tomadas en aquella época junto a nuestro Comandante en Jefe y Raúl.

El segundo encuentro se produjo a las 12:30 pm de ese propio día 8 en el local del Comité Regional del Partido Comunista de Ucrania con sede en la ciudad de Lvov, siendo recibidos por su Primer Secretario y un grupo de militantes de la organizacion partidista. De igual manera que la anterior, logramos crear las condicones de ambientación adecuadas para el mejor desarrollo de la actividad. Manuel leyó el mensaje de nuestro embajador y contestó varias preguntas al concluir su intervención sobre temas de interés relacionados con nuestro país, Los Cinco, el bloqueo, el Ché. Se proyectó el documental “Misión contra el terror” sobre los Cinco y las actividades terroristas desplegadas por los miembros de la mafia de Miami contra Cuba.

Durante el encuentro se produjo la constitución del Comité por la liberación de Los Cinco en la provincia de Lvov, siendo el No.17 constituido en Ucrania. El mismo quedó conformado gracias a la solidaridad de organizaciones locales tales como el Partido Comunista de Ucrania, el Partido Comunista de obreros y campesinos de Ucrania, el Komsomol leninista de Ucrania, la Unión de las mujeres trabajadoras “Por el futuro de los niños de Ucrania”, la Unión de obreros de Ucrania, la Intelectualidad por el socialismo, la Unión de los oficiales soviéticos en Ucrania. En el texto de la reolución se señala en particular que “... Nos unimos al movimiento de solidaridad internacional y exigimos al gobierno de los EEUU la liberación inmediata de los Cinco Héroes Cubanos...”.
La actividad contó con la cobertura periodística del jefe de redacción del periódico “Vilna Ucraina”, órgano de prensa del PCU en Lvov.

Como conclusión del programa de encuentros en Lvov, a las 3 y 30 pm fuimos recibidos por la representación local del “Fondo de atención a los Niños de Chernóbil”, donde también pudimos intercambiar con los asistentes sobre los Cinco y otros aspectos de interés sobre Cuba. Después de leido el mensaje de nuestro embajador, se proyectó el documental “Chernóbil en Nosotros”, que narra sobre el Programa cubano de atención médica a los niños damnificados por la catástrofe de Chernóbil, y se actualizó al auditorio sobre el estado actual del trabajo del mismo.

Los tres encuentros desarrollados estuvieron presididos por nuestra enseña nacional, el escudo y pancartas alegóricas a los Cinco, con un acompañamiennto simultaneo de canciones cubanas como fondo musical, finalizando con nuestro Himno Nacional, lo cual permitió crear un ambiente adecuado para los fines de las actividades: establecer contactos en defensa y apoyo a la liberación de nuestros Cinco Héroes en particular; y lazos de amistad y solidaridad con Cuba, así como intercambiar sobre otros temas como el bloqueo a nuestro pais por parte de EEUU y otros de interés general relacionados con la isla.

En cada uno de los encuentros se distribuyó información escrita sobre la causa de Los Cinco y la lucha por su liberación, así como libros sobre la vida y obra el Comandante en Jefe, y ejemplares del libro “Cuba por siempre”, escrito por Natalia Rasínskaya, periodista y conductora de la TV ucraniana, oriunda de esta ciudad de Lvov, y gran amiga de Cuba.

Valoramos como muy buenos y positivos estos encuentros, ya que además de informar ampliamente a todos los presentes sobre la actualidad cubana, lograr la comprensión y apoyo a la causa de los Cinco, los mismos permitieron también establecer relaciones en Lvov de colaboración futura en variados temas de interés con estas organizaciones sociales de tanta cercanía a la historia de nuestra Revolución. Las actividades se desarrollaron en un ambiente de entendimiento mutuo, solidaridad y plena amistad.
