YOUTH CAMPAIGN IN SOLIDARITY WITH THE FIVE CUBAN HEROES UNJUSTLY IMPRISONED IN THE UNITED STATES

10th January to 30th April 2007

Friends and comrades all over the world,

On behalf of the brave and noble people of which we are part, the Cuban youth is calling on youth and student movements, associations and the young population of the entire world to join the struggle for truth and justice, as they have so many times before in the long history of humanity. We call on you to participate in a new World Campaign, from 10th January to 30th April, to break the silence that surrounds the case of the five Cuban patriots unjustly imprisoned in the United States.

The campaign for the release of these five heroes represents a battle for truth and against terrorism. The aim is to break the wall of silence about the case imposed by the U.S. government on public opinion, to denounce the manipulation and lies, to call for justice to be served and demand the immediate release of the five Cubans.

Our comrades have now served eight years of unjust incarceration; they are victims of imperialism's total irrationality and utter contempt for human dignity. The imperialists arbitrarily ignore the pronouncements of international organizations and set up all kinds of legal obstacles to prevent a just solution to the case. Only the real mobilization of public opinion will bring to bear the pressure needed to obtain the justice our people are fighting for.

Humanity is at a crossroads in its history and it is we the younger generation who are responsible for this victory for a better future. This campaign will be for five men who epitomize the highest values of decency, altruism, bravery and solidarity. It will be a campaign for truth.

We invite everyone to round off the campaign by attending an International Youth Solidarity Meeting on 29th and 30th April, in Havana, Cuba. Our youth and our people will be immensely proud to welcome you, to reflect together on the successes already achieved in this campaign and to plan the steps we can take in the future.

Llaman a jornada de solidaridad con Los Cinco

A una jornada juvenil de solidaridad con los cinco héroes cubanos prisioneros políticos en cárceles de EE.UU. por luchar contra el terrorismo, llamaron hoy en esta capital la Unión de Jóvenes Comunistas (UJC) y las organizaciones estudiantiles.

En conmemoración del aniversario 78 del asesinato de Julio Antonio Mella, una vez más los jóvenes de Cuba levantarán las voces para defender, exigir y denunciar las injusticias a la que son sometidos René González, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino, Fernando González y Gerardo Hernández.

Los Cinco -como se les conoce ya mundialmente- tras ser detenidos en 1998 en Miami, fueron condenados en esa ciudad en parcializado proceso judicial por el único hecho de penetrar los grupos de extrema derecha que allí, y con total impunidad, organizan y ejecutan acciones terroristas contra Cuba desde hace más de cuatro décadas.

Ricardo Alarcón de Quesada, miembro del Buró Político y presidente del Parlamento, Julio Martínez Ramírez, primer secretario de la UJC, y familiares de Los Cinco, entre otros, encabezaron el acto en el Memorial Mella de esta capital.

Defender a Los Cinco es defender el derecho a la verdad, la justicia y el decoro, ya que ellos representan los valores de una sociedad nueva ajena al egoísmo, al consumo y al individualismo, y son expresión de sentimientos altruistas, solidarios, hombres con sentido de Patria y Humanidad, subraya la convocatoria.

La jornada que se extenderá hasta el 30 de abril constituirá un espacio de reflexión y acercamiento, de debate y análisis de los valores y la ética de esos luchadores antiterroristas, y ocasión para conocerlos más como hombres, hijos, padres y hermanos.

Será esta una tribuna para reafirmar el compromiso con la Patria, con la Revolución y el Socialismo y con quienes han defendido esa trinchera en las más difíciles condiciones, sin rendirse ni claudicar.

En el homenaje Adalberto Hernández, vicepresidente nacional de la Federación Estudiantil Universitaria (FEU), envió un mensaje solidario a René, Gerardo, Ramón, Antonio y Fernando y destacó que Mella es paradigma de la juventud ya que sus raíces, lejos de extinguirse, penetran más en la conciencia de los cubanos.

Agregó que hoy por vez primera, en tributo a Julio Antonio Mella, son izadas en todos los municipios del país las banderas de la FEU, símbolo de la multiplicación de las ideas del desaparecido líder estudiantil.
