A Bridge of Solidarity
Oct. 7, 2008 On Oct. 8, during the Third International Week of Solidarity with the Five, an exhibit of portraits by Antonio Guerrero, one of the Five Cuban Patriots unjustly imprisoned in the U.S. for 10 years, will be held. The "Bridge of Solidarity" exhibit, held under the auspices of the Union of Young Communists of Cuba, is a joint project of Antonio and American photographer Bill Hackwell. Antonio drew the portraits from each photograph send by Bill. The project has been more than a year in the making, due to the conditions of imprisonment experienced by Antonio, added to the difficulty of obtaining materials and the delays in communication that were experienced. During the time he has been working on this project, Antonio has been in "lockdown" for more than 4 months, and out of communication on many occasions. The work is based on 37 photographs taken by Bill, in which are found a roster of personalities from different countries, family members of the Five, and participants in demonstrations and members of the international solidarity movement. Those who appear in this project are only an example of the people who have been involved in the struggle for the freedom of the Five of whom Bill has taken photos. The opening of the exhibit will be Oct. 8 at 11 a.m. in the Palace of Computation in central Havana; Antonio's family and Bill Hackwell will be present. The exhibit will be there from Oct. 8 to 28, as an homage from Cuban youth to the resistance of the Five and their families and the Camilo-Che week, afterwards it will be shown in other Cuban cities and will be discussed in the Coloquium of Holguin. by Joel Mayor Loran Drawings by Antonio Guerrero, one of the Cuban Five imprisoned in the US, and photos by Bill Hackwell, member of the US National Committee to Free the Cuban Five, comprise an exposition titled "A Bridge of Solidarity" that just opened at the Computer Palace in Havana.
According to Hackwell, present at the opening, the show is dedicated to the struggle to obtain freedom for the Cuban Five. He explained that the artistic project took a year to become reality and that during four of those twelve months Antonio was in solitary. "They didn’t permit communication by telephone, everything was by e-mail. One of those days in which I had doubts of whether the project would be possible, I received a message that said: ‘Don’t worry about me; I’m drawing every day,’" said Hackwell. The photographer said that Guerrero insists on maintaining the project and wants to include more people who, as the first 37 and 1000s of others, are struggling for the Cuban Five’s freedom. Hackwell said that he longs to take a final photo of the Cuban Five walking out of the prisons. Present at the opening ceremony for the exhibition was Ricardo Alarcon, president of the Cuban parliament, who criticized the decision of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals of Atlanta, sustaining the Cuban Five’s convictions. He alerted that "they can’t maintain the Five in prison forever and we are going to bring about their return," he said. The son of Antonio Guerrero read a message from his father to Cubans at the opening. Yoel Queipo, member of the leadership of the Young Communist League (UJC), announced that the exposition would travel the entire country as a tribute to Antonio, Fernando, Gerardo, Ramon y Rene. Also present was Fernando Remirez, member of the Communist Party Central Committee Secretariat, a delegation form Botswana that is visiting the country; Eugenio Ravinet, general secretary of the Ibero-American Youth Organization and other relatives of the Cuban Five.

Un Puente de Solidaridad
7 de octubre de 2008 El 8 de octubre, dentro de la Tercera Jornada Internacional de Solidaridad con los Cinco, se llevará a cabo una exposición de retratos de Antonio Guerrero, uno de los Cinco Patriotas Cubanos, encarcelado injustamente en EE.UU. desde hace 10 años. Este proyecto tomó más de un año en concretarse, debido a las dificultades propias de las condiciones de reclusión que padece Antonio, sumado a la falta de materiales para realizar sus obras y la demora en la comunicación a la que está expuesto. La obra se basa en 37 fotografías tomadas por Bill, donde confluyen los rostros de personalidades de diferentes países, familiares de los Cinco, participantes en manifestaciones e integrantes de la solidaridad internacional. Quienes aparecen en este proyecto son solo un ejemplo de las personas que han estado envueltos en la lucha por la libertad de los Cinco de las que Bill tomó fotos. La inauguración de la exposición, será el 8 de octubre a las 11:00 a.m. en el Palacio de la Computación en Centro Habana, contará con la presencia de la familia de Antonio y Bill Hackwell. La exposición estará allí del 8 al 28 de Octubre, como homenaje de la juventud cubana a la resistencia de los Cinco y sus Familias y la Jornada Camilo-Che, luego se llevará a otras ciudades de Cuba y se expondrá en el Coloquio de Holguín. por Yudelsy Fundora Martínez La Habana, 8 oct (AIN) La muestra "Un puente de solidaridad", 37 dibujos de Antonio Guerrero, fue inaugurada hoy en el Palacio Central de Computación, de esta ciudad, en acto encabezado por Ricardo Alarcón, Presidente del Parlamento cubano. Alarcón, miembro del Buró Político del Comité Central del Partido Comunista de Cuba, subrayó el significado de la exposición, cuyos cuadros están inspirados en igual número de fotografías del artista norteamericano Bill Hackwell, también incluidas. Esa entrega a cuatro manos, resultado de un intenso trabajo de un año entre Hackwell y uno de Los Cinco antiterroristas cubanos prisioneros injustamente en los Estados Unidos, exhibe los retratos de personas vinculadas a la lucha por su liberación en todo el mundo y de víctimas de actos violentos contra Cuba. En la apertura, Bill Hackwell, cuya obra se ha enfocado en los cambios sociales de la clase trabajadora y las comunidades oprimidas, dijo que cuatro de los 12 meses que duró el proyecto, Antonio permaneció en celdas de confinamiento solitario, tiempo en el cual no paró de pintar. Destacó, además, la habilidad de Guerrero para aprender y perfeccionar su arte en condiciones extremas y trasmitió su deseo de continuar con el proyecto, el cual es aún una obra en construcción. Agregó que este patriota y sus hermanos de causa, Fernando González, Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino y René González, son un vivo ejemplo de la idea de hombre nuevo del Che, que continúa siendo creativo en su pensamiento y ejemplo. Algunos de los personajes reflejados en la muestra son el líder de la Revolución, Fidel Castro, y Sergio Corrieri, quien fue presidente del Instituto Cubano de Amistad con los Pueblos hasta su fallecimiento. También aparecen Lucius Walker, reverendo norteamericano y líder de la Fundación Interreligiosa Pastores por la Paz, y Andrés Gómez, Coordinador de la Brigada Antonio Maceo en Miami. Otros de los protagonistas de la exposición, que reúne a políticos, artistas, luchadores sociales y familiares de Los Cinco, son Livio Di Celmo y Giustino Di Celmo, hermano y padre respectivamente de Favio, turista italiano asesinado en atentado terrorista contra la Isla. Distingue la muestra, asimismo, Odalys Pérez, hija del piloto de la nave de Cubana de Aviación que elementos contrarrevolucionarios al servicio de la CIA hicieron explotar en pleno vuelo en 1976 frente a las costas de Barbados, sabotaje que costó la vida a las 73 personas a bordo. Las 74 piezas de "Un puente de solidaridad", presentadas al público cubano en ocasión del aniversario 41 del asesinato del Guerrillero Heroico, estarán en el Palacio de Computación hasta el 28 del presente mes y luego recorrerán el resto del país.

With the photographs sent by Hackwell to Florence Penitentiary in Denver, Colorado, Guerrero drew 37 portraits include Mirtha (his mother), Fidel Castro, and the mother of the pilot who died in the sabotage of the Cubana Airlines passenger plane in 1976.
