ATLANTA, June 29. — The workshop "The Campaign for the Freedom of the Five", attracted participants at the Atlanta Georgia Social Forum, held the first time there by thousands of American activists and those from other parts of the world.

Leonard Weinglass, the head of the defense team for the five Cuban anti-terrorists imprisoned in US federal jails, explained the legal aspects of the case and the violations committed against the men.

Likewise, Roberto Gonzalez, a legal collaborator with the defense team, and brother of prisoner Rene Gonzalez, said the history of impunity and terrorism organized and financed from the US against Cuba justified the presence of "the Five" in that country.

Marjorie Cohn, the president of the National Union of Lawyers, denounced the special treatment that the US government gives to terrorists such as Luis Posada Carriles and Santiago Alvarez, in contrast to the treatment meted out against the Five since September 12, 1998, when they were arrested.

In a message sent by Gerardo Hernandez to the forum, he said "we are hostages of the failed US policy toward Cuba" and noted that the island "just as any other country of the world, is entitled to defend itself against terrorism, and that was exactly what we were doing. We were monitoring terrorist organizations in Miami to prevent more violent actions against our homeland."

ATLANTA, 29 de junio.— El taller La Campaña por la Libertad de los Cinco, reunió a participantes en el Foro Social de Atlanta en esta ciudad y que dio cita, por primera vez aquí, a miles de luchadores de movimientos sociales norteamericanos y de otras partes del mundo.

Leonard Weinglass, integrante del equipo de la Defensa de los Cinco antiterroristas cubanos, prisioneros en cárceles federales norteamericanas, explicó los aspectos legales del caso y las violaciones cometidas en el mismo.

En tanto, Roberto González, abogado colaborador del equipo legal, y hermano de René González, refirió que la historia de impunidad y terrorismo, organizado y financiado desde territorio de EE.UU. contra Cuba, justifica la presencia de los Cinco en este país.

Mientras, Marjorie Cohn, presidenta del Gremio Nacional de Abogados denunció el tratamiento especial que el gobierno estadounidense le da a terroristas como Luis Posada Carriles, y Santiago Álvarez, en contraste con el que reciben los Cinco desde que fueron arrestados el 12 de septiembre de 1998.

En un mensaje enviado por Gerardo Hernández al encuentro, precisa "somos rehenes de la fracasada política de Estados Unidos hacia Cuba" y puntualiza que la Isla "como cualquier otro país del mundo tiene el derecho de defenderse contra el terrorismo. Y eso era exactamente lo que estábamos haciendo. Estábamos monitoreando organizaciones terroristas en Miami para prevenir más acciones violentas contra nuestra patria".

El texto condena el doble rasero de la administración de Bush en su autoproclamada guerra contra el flagelo y enfatiza que Posada Carriles y Orlando Bosch son autores de la voladura de un avión cubano en 1976 donde 73 personas inocentes perecieron. "El hecho de que crímenes como ese aún estén impunes, es una señal de que nos queda mucho por luchar en este mundo en que vivimos", escribió Gerardo.
