On Monday October 26th, 2009, the San Francisco Labor Council (SFLC) passed a resolution in support of the Cuban Five and their rights for family visitation.

The Cuban Five are five men who came to the United States to monitor anti Cuban terrorist groups in Miami to protect the lives of not just Cubans but U.S. citizens as well. They are facing lengthy sentences and have been incarcerated for over 11 years. As this case gains international support there has been a significant increase in the number of resolutions by unions and city councils and the support of personalities in the U.S.

This particular resolution was brought up to the Executive Board of the SFLC by the American Federation of Teachers local 2121, that passed a similar resolution on August 25th and amongst other things stated that they will ask the SFLC for endorsement.

The San Francisco Labor Council is the local body of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) and serves as headquarters to the Labor Community in San Francisco. The SFLC represents more than 100,000 union members and their families who belong to over 150 affiliate unions. The AFL-CIO is the largest federation of unions in the United States and Canada.

The SFLC Resolution, calls for President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to consider the violation of International Covenant and due process for a fair trial associated with the conviction and imprisonment of the Cuban Five. The resolution also calls for diplomatic improvement in the relationship between the United States and Cuba.

Additionally it calls for the pardon and release of the Cuban Five to their homeland. It also demands that the US government to immediately grants visas to Olga Salanueva and Adriana Perez to visit their husbands in prison. And finally the SFLC calls on President Richard Trumpka of the AFL-CIO to send a letter to President Obama expressing support for content of the resolution.

Copies of this important resolution will be sent to President Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Attorney General Eric Holder, California Senators Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein, the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and other Bay Area Congressional members, including State Senate members Mark Leno and Leland Yee, California State Assembly members Tom Ammiano and Fiona Ma, and all the members of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.

El lunes 26 de octubre, 2009, el Consejo Laboral de San Francisco (SFLC por sus siglas en ingles), aprobó una resolución en apoyo a los Cinco Cubanos y a sus derechos de recibir visitas familiares.

Los Cinco Cubanos vinieron a los EEUU a monitorear grupos terroristas que operan en Miami para proteger no solo la vida de cubanos sino también la de ciudadanos estadounidenses. Los Cinco están cumpliendo largas e injustas sentencias y han estado encarcelados por más de 11 años. A medida que este caso gana apoyo internacional, en los EEUU también aumentan los números de resoluciones en sindicatos y consejos de ciudades como el de reconocidas personalidades que apoyan a los Cinco.

Esta resolución en particular, fue llevada a la Mesa Ejecutiva del Consejo Laboral de San Francisco por la Federación Americana de Maestros Local 2121, que aprobó una resolución similar el 25 de agosto y que estipuló, entre otras cosas, pedir apoyo al Consejo Laboral de San Francisco.

El Consejo Laboral de San Francisco es el cuerpo local de la Federación Americana de Trabajadores-Congreso de Organizaciones Industriales (AFL-CIO por sus siglas en ingles) y sirve de oficina central a la comunidad laboral de San Francisco. El SFLC representa a más de 100,000 miembros y sus familiares pertenecientes a más de 150 sindicatos afiliados. El AFL-CIO es la organización más grande de trabajadores en los EU y Canadá.

La Resolución del SFLC hace un llamado al Presidente Obama y a la Secretaria de Estado Hillary Clinton para que consideren la violación de Convenios Internacionales que EEUU está cometiendo en este caso, y el derecho a un juicio justo asociado con las sentencias y el encarcelamiento de los Cinco Cubanos. La resolución también pide por el mejoramiento de relaciones entre los Estados Unidos y Cuba.

Además pide por el perdón y la libertad de los Cinco Cubanos para que regresen a su patria; demanda que el gobierno de los EEUU inmediatamente les otorgue visas a Olga Salanueva y Adriana Pérez para visitar a sus esposos en las prisiones donde se encuentran. Y finalmente, el SFLC hace un llamado al Presidente del AFL-CIO Richard Trumpka para que le envíe una carta al Presidente Obama expresándole su apoyo al contenido de la resolución.

Copias de esta importante resolución serán enviadas al Presidente Obama, a la Secretaria de Estado Hillary Clinton, al Fiscal General Eric Holder, a las Senadores por el Estado de California Bárbara Boxer y Dianne Feinstein, a la líder de la Cámara de Representante del Congreso Nancy Pelosi, y a otros miembros del gobierno local del Área de la Bahía de San Francisco, incluidos miembros del Senado Estatal Mark Leno y Leland Yee, miembros de la Asamblea estatal de California Tom Ammiano y Fiona Ma, y la Mesa Directiva de Supervisores de San Francisco.
