HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 8 (acn) If the American people knew the real mission of the Cuban Five, they would immediately demand their freedom, said Gloria la Riva, coordinator of the US National Committee for the Release of the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters unjustly held in US jails for nearly 10 years now.

During an encounter in San Francisco California, the activists with the National Committee unveiled a huge billboard, which demands the release of Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Rene Gonzalez and Fernando Gonzalez, internationally known as the Cuban Five.

La Riva said the Five “are not criminals, they are heroes; they are very courageous and they have never regretted the decision they took over 10 years ago, when they infiltrated terrorist groups based in Miami in an effort to prevent them from carrying out terrorist actions and with it avoid a confrontation between the United States and Cuba.

She recalled that the case is unknown in the United States due to the silence practiced by the US mainstream media. The billboard has been deployed to raise awareness on the case and it will be there during the month of August in the eyes of hundreds of thousands of US citizens traveling along Mission Avenue in S.F. La Riva also denounced the protection given by the Bush administration to renowned terrorists like Luis Posada Carriles, Orlando Bosch, Santiago Alvarez-Magriña and others who keep plotting criminal acts against Cuba.

Meanwhile, Cindy Sheehan, a US anti-war activist who lost her son Casey in the US-led war in Iraq, said that it is really astonishing to see how Washington claims it is fighting terrorism, while the White House supports terrorists.

Sheeham, who also demanded the lifting of the US economic blockade of Cuba, referred to the existence of another billboard on the Cuban Five, which is deployed in Venezuela. The deployment of the billboard in S.F. would not have been possible without the contribution made by other committees in solidarity with Cuba, which are based in Italy, France, the U.K., Germany, Puerto Rico, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Canada, as well as citizens in over one hundred US cities and towns, Gloria la Riva said.

Other speakers during the encounter were Alison Bodine, of Pastors for Peace; Richard Becker, ANSWER coalition coordinator; Tim Paulson, executive director of the San Francisco-based Labor Council, and Tom Lacey, of the California-based Peace and Freedom Party.

Denuncian la protección de Washington a terroristas radicados en Miami y piden el cese del bloqueo. La valla no hubiera sido posible sin las contribuciones de los comités solidarios en Italia, Francia, Inglaterra, Alemania, Puerto Rico, España, Suecia, Suiza, Canadá y Estados Unidos

SAN FRANCISCO.— Una gran valla demandando la libertad de los cinco luchadores antiterroristas cubanos presos en cárceles de Estados Unidos desde hace casi diez años, fue inaugurada este jueves en el centro de la ciudad norteamericana de San Francisco, en un encuentro organizado por el Comité Nacional por la Liberación de los Cinco de Estados Unidos.

«No son criminales, son héroes (...) tienen mucha valentía nunca se han arrepentido por la misión que tomaron hace más diez años cuando entraron a Miami para infiltrar a los grupos terroristas con el simple propósito de impedir actos terroristas, salvar vidas e impedir una confrontación entre los EE.UU. y Cuba», manifestó Gloria La Riva, coordinadora del Comité.

La destacada activista recordó que el caso es desconocido en los EE.UU. debido al silencio de los grandes medios. Por ello, se colocó esta valla que estará durante todo agosto a la vista de cientos de miles de transeúntes en la céntrica Mission Avenue de San Francisco.

«Si el pueblo de Estados Unidos supiera de la real misión de los Cinco, exigirían su inmediata libertad», enfatizó Gloria La Riva, quien denunció a su vez la completa libertad que la administración Bush le da a terroristas como Luis Posada Carriles, Orlando Bosch, Santiago Álvarez Fernández-Magriñá y otros, que continúan planificando crímenes contra Cuba.

Es asombroso cómo EE. UU. dice que combate el terrorismo, cuando le da apoyo, declaró Cindy Sheehan, destacada activista contra la guerra desde que su hijo Casey muriera en Iraq.

Sheehan, quien también abogó por «el cese del bloqueo económico impuesto por Estados Unidos a Cuba», hizo referencia a la existencia de una valla «tan grande como esta», en Venezuela.

En declaraciones a JR, vía correo electrónico, Gloria La Riva, afirmó que la valla «no hubiera sido posible sin las contribuciones de los comités solidarios con los Cinco y con Cuba en Italia, Francia, Inglaterra, Alemania, Puerto Rico, España, Suecia, Suiza, Canadá, y ciudadanos de más de cien ciudades y pueblos en EE.UU.».

Otros oradores fueron Alison Bodine, de la Caravana Pastores Por la Paz; Richard Becker, coordinador de la coalición ANSWER; Tim Paulson, director ejecutivo del Labor Council de San Francisco; y Tom Lacey, del partido Paz y Libertad en California.
