Thousands in Peru Demand Release of Cuban FiveReprinted from Daily Granma LIMA, December 24.— A declaration expressing solidarity with five Cubans imprisoned in the United States was made public Sunday in Peru and includes the signatures of Peruvian personalities including politicians, labor leaders and intellectuals. The document demanding freedom for the Cuban Five, who worked to prevent terrorist attacks against their country, was sent to US Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez. Arrested in September 1998 for infiltrating violent right wing groups based in southern Florida, the Cuban Five were sentenced in 2001 to harsh prison terms ranging from 15 years to double life imprisonment. The biased nature of their Miami trial and the inhumane conditions of their captivity has been condemned by several international human rights and judicial organizations. The Peruvians demanded the Cubans "be released so they can return to the country and their families." It adds: "They fought terrorism under the most adverse conditions while trying to defend their country and humanity." The statement comes as part of the ongoing global campaign supporting the Cuban Five. |
