Madrid Event for Cuban Five

Mar. 16, 2007

MADRID, (PL).—A meeting and concert demanding freedom for the Cuban Five, held for over eight years in the United States, took place at the Cuban Embassy in Madrid, where a documentary film was shown and a book presented.

"El mayor amor" (The greatest love) a documentary in DVD format by director Leonardo Urrutia Segura, with the script by his son Albert, was presented by Juan Carmelo Garcia, president of the IEPALA Publishing House.

Albert Segura is also the author of the book "Chronicle of a Silence", about the Cuban Five case.

The documentary uses as the basis for its arguments interviews with the wives and closest relatives of the Cuban Five: Gerardo Hernandez, Ramón Labanino, Antonio Guerrero, Rene Gonzalez and Fernando Gonzalez.

There are no questions ask of the women, at least in the classic way of asking. Instead, poems and letters from the Cuban Five to their closest relatives are read, written at different moments of their long imprisonment.

Their mothers and wives, barely holding back their tears, explain the details and exceptional circumstances under which the letters and poems were written.

The documentary makers explained the personal motivations that moved them to associate with Mundo Latino to create the film and book that goes along with it. Juan Carmelo Garcia stated that he was proud of the fact that the institution he presides had made them possible.

IEPALA is the Institute of Political Studies of Latin America and Africa, created in Montevideo, Uruguay back in 1955. It moved to Spain 1958 and obtained legal status there in 1965.

The meeting at the Cuban Embassy came to an end with a concert by author and performer Orlis Pineda, whose musical compositions in favor of the Cuban Five are widely presented at solidarity activities throughout Spain.
