In acknowledgement to her tireless actions in solidarity with Cuba, Sergio Corrieri, president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship, awarded the Friendship Medal to Katrien Demuynck, the European coordinator for the liberation of the Cuban Five.

The Belgian friend was said to have distinguished herself in spreading the truth about the situation in Cuba, struggling against the blockade imposed by the US, and fighting for the release of the Cuban Five. These were the main reasons cited in awarding her the honor bestowed by the Council of State, said Elio Gamez, the vice-president of the Friendship Institute.

Since a very young age, Katrien devoted herself to noble causes. She has been involved with solidarity with Cuba work for a number of years and with the Anti-imperialist League. More recently she has worked as the European coordinator in the struggle for the freedom of the Cuban Five.

She has defended the stands of the Cuban Revolution in different international meetings and in 2001 carried out the first actions in favor of the cause of the Cuban Five – Ramon Labanino, Rene Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez and Gerardo Hernandez. She even managed to visit Gerardo in prison.

Katrien expressed thanks for the gesture of the Cuban government and recalled that it was in Nicaragua where she was working as a nurse in the southern region of the country where she came in contact for the first time with the Cuban cause through the Cuban internationalist doctors there.

There, she said, she could see the cruelty of neoliberalism that Nicaragua was living through at that moment, witnessing the grief of thousands of people who died without getting medical attention due to the lack or resources. It was then that she saw for herself the efforts of the Cuban doctors to treat patients – which was what made her join the solidarity with Cuba cause.

«Cuba is not a perfect society, but it is a star in a world full on injustice and exploitation. A small socialist island that shows us every day that a better and more human world is possible, » the Belgian activist said.

En reconocimiento a sus incansables acciones en favor de la solidaridad con Cuba, Sergio Corrieri, presidente del Instituto Cubano de Amistad con los Pueblos, impuso este martes la Medalla de la Amistad a Katrien Demuynck, coordinadora europea por la liberación de los Cinco.

La amiga belga se ha distinguido en la divulgación de la realidad cubana, su lucha contra el bloqueo impuesto por Estados Unidos a la Isla y en su labor y empeño por lograr la liberación de nuestros Cinco Héroes cubanos presos en cárceles norteamericanas. Estas fueron las causas principales para que se le concediera la condecoración que otorga el Consejo de Estado, según destacó Elio Gámez, vicepresidente del ICAP.

Desde muy joven Katrien se dedicó por entero a las causas más nobles y desde hace varios años inició su trabajo de solidaridad con Cuba en la organización Liga Antiimperialista; y más recientemente ha fungido como coordinadora europea por la liberación de los Cinco Héroes.

Ha defendido las posiciones de la Revolución Cubana en diferentes eventos internacionales y en 2001 realizó sus primeras acciones a favor de la causa de Ramón Labañino, René González, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González y Gerardo Hernández. A este último logró visitarlo en prisión.

Por su parte, Katrien agradeció el gesto del gobierno cubano y recordó que fue en Nicaragua, mientras trabajaba como enfermera en las áreas sureñas de ese país, donde tuvo contacto por primera vez con la causa cubana mediante los médicos internacionalistas de la Isla que daban su aporte en ese país.

Allí —cuenta— pudo palpar el neoliberalismo crudo que vivía la Nicaragua de entonces, el dolor de miles de personas que morían sin recibir atención médica por falta de recursos y fue el desvelo que encontró en los médicos cubanos para tratar a los pacientes lo que le motivó a unirse a la solidaridad con la Isla.

«Cuba no es una sociedad perfecta, pero sí es una estrella en un mundo lleno de injusticias y explotación. Una pequeña isla socialista que nos demuestra todos los días que un mundo más humano y mejor es posible», concluyó la activista belga.

Estuvieron presentes en la ceremonia realizada en la sede del Instituto Cubano de Amistad con los Pueblos, Fernando Remírez de Estenoz, miembro del Secretariado del Comité Central y jefe de su Departamento de Relaciones Internacionales; Tubal Páez, presidente de la UPEC; así como representantes del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores, de la Asamblea Nacional del Poder Popular y familiares de los Cinco Héroes.
