MONTREAL, November 8.— Breaking the Silence, a solidarity conference on the Cuban Five takes place Friday and Saturday in Toronto. The event is geared to discuss strategies to obtain the freedom of the five men after over nine years in US prisons.

Nino Paglicia from the Canadian Network on Cuba, one of the meeting’s organizing groups, told Notimex that several US legal experts linked to the case would be in attendance including defense team member Leonard Weinglass who represents Antonio Guerrero.

Weinglass said the case of the Cuban Five has stronger arguments than any other "of the many I have seen," adding that "the activities of the Cuban Five [to gather information on terrorist groups based in Florida] were justified and necessary to save lives."

Elizabeth Palmeiro, wife of Cuban Five member Ramon Labanino, and Silvia Garcia, a Cuban parliament official are among the Cuban participants at the Toronto gathering.

Palmeiro noted the importance of the meeting to come up with a plan of action to break the wall of silence in the media about the situation of their loved ones imprisoned in the United States.

"[The Cuban Five] are victims of a great injustice, of a double standard and discourse of the US government which at the same time it says it is waging a global war on terrorism protects Cuban-born terrorists that have caused death and suffering to our people."

Since her arrival in Canada, Palmeiro has met with several Canadian officials, students and civic groups, receiving a showing of support from diverse organizations.

MONTREAL, 8 de noviembre.–– Con el propósito de discutir estrategias para obtener la liberación de los Cinco cubanos encarcelados en Estados Unidos desde 1998, organizaciones y personalidades norteamericanas, de Canadá y Cuba asistirán a la Conferencia de Solidaridad Rompiendo el Silencio que se celebrará este viernes y sábado en Toronto.

En declaraciones a Notimex, Nino Paglicia, de la Red Canadiense sobre Cuba, una de las organizaciones encargadas de la convocatoria, puntualizó que el encuentro reunirá a importantes juristas de Estados Unidos vinculadas al caso de los cinco héroes cubanos, como el abogado Leonard Weinglass, defensor legal de Antonio Guerrero.

Weinglass declaró que este proceso tiene más fuertes argumentos que ningún otro "de los que haya estado al tanto", y sostuvo que "las actividades de los Cinco estaban justificadas y eran necesarias para salvar vidas".

Entre los participantes cubanos figuran Elizabeth Palmeiro, esposa de Ramón Labañino, y Silvia García, funcionaria de la Asamblea Nacional de Cuba.

Al referirse a la importancia de la jornada, Elizabeth Palmeiro indicó que servirá para realizar un plan de acción destinado a "romper el muro de silencio informativo sobre la situación de nuestros familiares en Estados Unidos".

Dijo, además, que los Cinco "son víctimas de una tremenda injusticia, de la doble moral y discurso del gobierno de Estados Unidos, que al tiempo que dice llevar a cabo una guerra global contra el terrorismo protege a terroristas de origen cubano que han causado muertes y sufrimientos a nuestro pueblo".

Desde su llegada a Canadá, Palmeiro ha realizado intercambios con funcionarios canadienses, estudiantes y grupos sociales, en los que ha recibido las manifestaciones de respaldo y solidaridad de diversas organizaciones con la causa de los Cinco.
