Cuban group blasts Posada's release, US stance

Oct. 6, 2007

TODAY MARKS the 31st anniversary of the bombing of the Cubana Airlines aircraft off Barbados.

The incident will be commemorated with a joint ceremony by the July 26 Movement (Barbados) and the Cuban Barbadian Friendship Association at 4:30 pm at the Cuban Monument, Paynes Bay, St James, to demonstrate solidarity with the government and people of Cuba.

Of the 73 people who perished as a result of that act, 57 were Cubans, including members of the Olympic fencing team and other athletes.

Eleven Guyanese were aboard, all going to Cuba to study, with six of them hoping to become medical doctors.

In a Press release yesterday, spokesman for the July 26 Movement (Barbados), David Denny, said his organisation, as well as the "Cuban Barbadian Friendship Association, Cuban Five Justice Committee (Barbados) and all progressive forces in Barbados demand that the government of the United States of America start the immediate process for the extradition of terrorist Luis Posada Carriles to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela for the killing of 73 persons on board of a Cuban Airline on October 6, 1976, in Barbados".

"Our movement sees the release of Cuban origin Luis Posada Carriles as the [American] support for terrorist acts against the government and people of the Republic of Cuba . . . [and] the verdict reached by Federal Court Judge Kathleen Cardone in El Paso, Texas, to set free Posada Carriles, as a move to accommodate and support terrorists who have carried out terrorist acts against the government and people of the Republic of Cuba."

The July 26 Movement also called on the United Nations [General Assembly] to declare October 6 as a Day of Solidarity with the Republic of Cuba and to condemn the American government for all of the terrorists' action against Cuba, carried out by groups in the United States.
