Youth Campaign in Solidarity with the Cuban Five

Havana, Feb 10 (RHC).- The "Youth Campaign to Win Freedom for the Cuba Five," which runs through next April under the sponsorship of the Young Communists League (UJC) and other Cuban student organizations, will conclude in Havana with an international solidarity conference. Members of solidarity organizations from all over the world have already confirmed their participation.
The First International Youth Meeting in Solidarity with the Cuban Five is set for April 29 and 30 here in the Cuban capital.
According to Ernesto Fernandez, with the UJC's National Bureau of Foreign Affairs, the conference will be the closing event of the "Campaign to Win Freedom for the Cuban Five," which the UJC launched on January 10, as part of activities on the organization's 45th anniversary.
Regarding the solidarity activists who have already confirmed their attendance, the UJC leader pointed to members of socialist and communist youth organizations from the United States, Spain, Poland, Brazil, Mexico, Cyprus, Russia and Nicaragua, as well as representatives of youth coordinating committees from Venezuela and Ecuador.
Also on hand, as special guests, will be relatives of the Cuban Five and outstanding Cuban youth, who are right now taking part in public forums and debates on the case of the Cuban Five in various Cuban regions.
The Cuban Five -Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González, Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino and Rene González- were arrested in Miami, Florida in 1998. At the risk of their own lives, the Cuban Five -as they are known internationally-- infiltrated extremist anti-Cuba groups in South Florida, responsible for numerous violent actions against the island. Their mission there was to monitor those groups in order to prevent further attacks against Cuba, which have thus far resulted in the deaths of close to 3,500 innocent people on the island over the past several decades.
