Wives of the Cuban Five Arrive in Geneva

GENEVA, (PL).- Wives of two of the Cuban Five arrived in this Swiss city on Tuesday for a program of activities that includes attending sessions of the UN Human Rights Council.

Adriana Pérez and Olga Salanueva, the wives of Gerardo Hernández and René González, are accompanied by Ana Maira Rodríguez, from the office of the president of the Cuban Parliament. They will remain in Switzerland through March 29.

Shortly after their arrival, the women traveled to the capital Bern where they met with a group of legislators.

On Thursday Perez and Salanueva return to Geneva for a meeting at the Palace of Nations, seat of the Fourth UN Human Rights Council meetings.

Arrested in September 1998 for the "crime" of uncovering terrorist plots against Cuba that were being planned in southern Florida, the Cuban Five were later sentenced by a biased Miami court to harsh prison terms ranging from 15 years to double life imprisonment. The appeals process continues eight and a half years after their initial detention.

Adriana Perez and Olga Salanueva, wives of Gerardo Hernandez and Rene Gonzalez, respectively, were welcomed at the Legislature in Bern by a group of congress people from different political parties.

The wives explained to the legislators the current situation of the five Cubans that have been held unfairly in US prisons for eight years for gathering information to hinder new terrorist actions against their country.

They also told the parliamentarians about the US government s denial of visas and authorizations for the prisoners relatives to visit them normally, as required by law.

Ana Maria Rovira, Cuban ambassador to Switzerland, and Ana Maira Rodriguez, member of the Cuban People s Power National Assembly, accompany Perez and Salanueva.

Upon their return to Geneva they visited the Nations Palace, where the fourth UN Human Rights Council is currently in session.

The women held a private meeting there with Human Rights Council president Ambassador Luis Alfonso de Alba.

Llegan a Ginebra familiares de antiterroristas cubanos

GINEBRA, (PL).— Las esposas de dos de los cinco antiterroristas cubanos presos injustamente en Estados Unidos llegaron a esta ciudad para cumplir un programa de actividades que incluye la asistencia a sesiones del Consejo de Derechos Humanos.

Adriana Pérez y Olga Salanueva, esposas de Gerardo Hernández y René González, respectivamente, permanecerán en Suiza hasta el próximo 29 de marzo y viajaron acompañadas por Ana Maira Rodríguez, de la presidencia de la Asamblea Nacional del Poder Popular (Parlamento).

Poco después de su llegada partieron hacia Berna, la capital suiza, donde se entrevistarán con un grupo de parlamentarios nacionales.

Mañana volverán a Ginebra y serán recibidas en el Palacio de las Naciones, sede del IV Período Ordinario de Sesiones del Consejo.
