Havana, Feb 14 (acn) The University Network of Solidarity with the Cuban Five added some 250 new members this week from the participants gathered in Havana to attend the Sixth International Congress on Higher Education "Universidad 2008.”

The network runs the website: http://5heroes.cujae.edu.cu (in Spanish) and seeks to bolster efforts to free the Cuban Five. The site includes letters, photos and documents about the judicial process and has members from around the world.

Federico Bermudez, a Salvadoran student, said that belonging to the project and supporting the Cuban Five has allowed him to learn about them and understand them as true heroes in these times. Students and professors shared similar experiences with the participants at University 2008.

Cindy O’Hara, a US attorney and honorary president of the network, spoke on the difficult conditions under which the Cuban Five live. However, she said that they maintain a strong will.

Cuban Parliament President Ricardo Alarcon noted the urgency of the case and said that this year is decisive. He said the battle will be won or lost inside the United States. “We’ve advanced a lot in international support but paradoxically the greatest achievements have come in the legal arena, with the historic ruling of the three judges of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals of Atlanta in August 2005,” throwing out their convictions.

However, the ruling was later reversed by the full 12-judge court and the drawn out appeals process continues while the Cuban Five are in their tenth year in prison.

Two of the highlights of the Wednesday session at the University 2008 Congress were a lecture by Brazilian author and theologian Frei Betto about university extension and a panel discussion on cultural diversity.

La Red Universitaria de Solidaridad con los Cinco Héroes crece en número de miembros. El VI Congreso Internacional Universidad 2008 ha permitido que 250 de sus delegados se solidaricen con el caso y decidan formar parte de la red, que involucra a más de 600 personas de varias partes del mundo.

La red está hospedada en el sitio web http://5heroes.cujae.edu.cu, la red se propone aunar esfuerzos en la lucha por la liberación de los Cinco. Por ello incluye en la página, cartas, fotografías y documentos sobre el proceso judicial, con el fin de revelar la verdad.

Para Federico Bermúdez, alumno salvadoreño, pertenecer al proyecto le ha posibilitado conocer de cerca a cada uno de ellos y entenderlos como héroes de estos tiempos. Experiencias así, compartieron estudiantes y profesores con los participantes en Universidad 2008.

En el encuentro, Cindy O’ Hara, abogada norteamericana y presidenta de honor de la red universitaria, expuso las difíciles condiciones en las que viven los cinco cubanos. Sin embargo, mantienen un espíritu fuerte.

Ricardo Alarcón, presidente del parlamento, alertó sobre la urgencia de no perder tiempo y definir lo que concretamente se debe hacer en este decisivo año. Donde se gana o se pierde la batalla es dentro de los Estados Unidos. Hemos avanzado mucho en la solidaridad internacional pero paradójicamente los mayores logros se han obtenido en el plano legal, con el histórico fallo de los tres jueces de la corte de Atlanta en agosto del 2005, precisó.

La jornada del evento incluyó también una conferencia del investigador brasileño Frei Betto sobre extensión universitaria, y el panel referente a la diversidad cultural, donde participaron destacados intelectuales.
