HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 9 (acn) One of the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters who remain unjustly imprisoned in the United States, Antonio Guerrero, called education experts from different parts of the world attending the University 2010 International Congress in Havana to fight for a better world, in a message read by lawyer Cindy O'Hara in the opening session of the event on Monday.

On behalf of his colleagues Fernando Gonzalez, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino and Rene Gonzalez (plus Antonio Guerrero, internationally known as the Cuban Five), Guerrero sent fraternal greetings to participants in the Congress and encouraged them to consolidate the social mission of higher education centers.

The Cuban Five, decorated with the Heroes of the Republic of Cuba distinction, were condemned in Miami to outrageous sentences for monitoring extremist groups based in Florida with the purpose of warning Cuba of violent actions perpetrated by these organizations.

Omar Herrera, executive secretary of the Congress, highlighted the attendance of some 2,500 delegates from more than 60 countries including Cuba, Venezuela, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador and Mexico.

In the meantime, China’s Deputy Education Minister Wang Liying said the meeting will focus on current challenges of higher education, while Spanish Education Minister Angel Gabilondo thanked Cuba for providing a space for reflection and for putting out initiatives aiming at achieving a better world, in which education plays a key role.

Andrei Fursenko, Russia’s Science and Education Minister, said he was impressed by the Cuban educational achievements and reaffirmed his interest in fostering exchange with Cuba in the sector during the days of the Congress.

Meanwhile, Venezuelan Education Minister Hector Navarro said an anti-consumption and environmentalist educational model focused on raising awareness on the need to defend the human species and the planet, should be established.

The University 2010 International Congress is underway in Havana’s Convention Center thru February 12. It includes workshops, round tables and keynote lectures.

La Habana, 8 feb (AIN) A luchar por un mundo mejor convocó Antonio Guerrero, uno de los cinco héroes cubanos presos injustamente en cárceles norteamericanas, en mensaje leído hoy por la abogada Cindy O´ Hara durante la inauguración del Congreso Universidad 2010.

A nombre de sus hermanos Fernando González, Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, y René González, Tony envió un fraternal saludo a los participantes en el cónclave a quienes instó a consolidar la misión social de los centros de educación superior.

Distinguidos por el pueblo como Héroes de la República de Cuba, Los Cinco fueron condenados en Miami a injustas condenas de prisión, por penetrar a grupos terroristas anticubanos asentados en la Florida y alertar a la isla caribeña de las acciones violentas de esas agrupaciones.

Omar Herrera, secretario ejecutivo del Congreso destacó la presencia de unos dos mil 500 delegados de más de 60 países entre los que destacan Cuba, Venezuela, España, Brasil, Argentina, Ecuador y México.

Wang Liying, viceministra China de Educación declaró que en el evento se analizarán los retos que debe afrontar la educación superior en la actualidad.

Por su parte, Angel Gabilondo, titular español del ramo, agradeció a Cuba por este espacio de reflexión y convocó a debatir y crear propuestas que permitan la concreción de un mundo mejor, donde la educación desempeña un papel fundamental.

Andrei Fursenko, al frente de la cartera de ciencia y educación en la Federación Rusa, se manifestó impresionado por los éxitos que en materia educativa ha tenido la Isla y recordó el interés de su país de aprovechar estos días para fomentar el intercambio con Cuba en esta materia.

Héctor Navarro, ministro venezolano de educación reclamó un nuevo modelo de enseñanza anticonsumista y ambientalista que concientice y abogue por la conservación de la especie humana y el planeta que habita.

El Congreso Internacional Universidad 2010 sesiona hasta el 12 de febrero en el Palacio de Las Convenciones de La Habana y comprende talleres, mesas redondas y conferencias magistrales.
