Among the letters demanding justice for the Cuban Five was that of Camagüey-resident journalist Sonia J. Castillo Cabreja who asks Eric Holder to allow Rene González –who served a long and unjust 13 year sentence in US jails- to visit his brother terminally ill with cancer in Havana, and can also return home with their loved ones. In the message, Castillo Cabreja wonders why he is kept in the United States while his brother has fallen severely ill because of cancer? So, she calls for compassion so that these two brothers can meet and hug each other again. “Please, let René give support to Irma, who is the elderly mother of both. Let that Roberto’s children can have their uncle by their side. Please, let that Irmita and Ivette can have their dad in such a difficult moment. Allow that Olga Salanueva can hold and kiss her husband after such a long, unjustified and cruel separation”, the Cuban journalist wrote. Citing the wise words of Cuba’s National Hero José Martí, who once wrote that “being good is the only way of being fortunate” Castillo Cabreja urged Attorney General Eric Holder to be good; confident that Rene’s children, wife, family and even the American public will be thankful for that when they learn about the case because they will not accept that the US Government continue riding roughshod over the human rights of this family”. René González was released from prison on October 2011, but he must be in an “absurd and stand-offish confinement”, that is to say, three years on court probation in the State of Florida. Although René has requested permission to temporarily travel to Cuba to see his brother, he has not received yet a reply from US officials. This is another chapter of the cruelty of the US authorities against the Cuban Five. In a recent moving letter sent to his brother Roberto, René states that “from the strange exile, from the sorrow of forced separation, under the most absurd conditions of supervised freedom, based on the dignity of his status as a Cuban patriot (like you) and on the affection nurtured by the ties of kinship and shared experience that unite us, is and always will be with you. Every time you raise your head, you'll be able to hear me shouting, together with my nephews and nieces.” |
por Lázaro David Najarro Pujo Camagüey, 12 mar.- La inocencia de los Cinco Héroes y su justificada presencia en EE.UU. para impedir acciones terroristas contra Cuba y los ciudadanos estadounidenses, están demostradas en las miles de cartas, correos electrónicos y llamadas telefónicas remitidas desde diferentes partes del mundo al Presidente Barack Obama, y al Fiscal General, Eric Holder, abogando por su inmediato regreso a su Patria. Entre las misivas se incluye la rubricada por la periodista camagüeyana Sonia J. Castillo Cabreja, que solicita a Eric Holder que permita a Rene González -quien cumplió una larga e injusta sentencia de 13 años de prisión-, visitar a su hermano gravemente enfermo de cáncer en La Habana, y también a que retorne a casa con los suyos definitivamente. En la misiva, Castillo Cabreja se pregunta ¿por qué retenerlo en los Estados Unidos justo ahora que su hermano Roberto está gravemente enfermo víctima de un cáncer? Y recurre a la sensibilidad humana para que esos dos hermanos se abracen de nuevo. “Permita, por favor, que René le brinde apoyo a Irma, la anciana madre de ambos. Permita que los hijos de Roberto tengan a su tío a su lado. Permita, por favor, que Irmita e Ivette tengan a su papá en un momento tan difícil. Permita, de una buena vez, que Olga Salanueva pueda abrazar y besar a su esposo después de una separación tan prolongada, injustificada y cruel”, argumenta la periodista camagüeyana. Al apelar a la sabia palabra del Héroe Nacional cubano, José Martí, quien expresó que “ser bueno es el único modo de ser dichoso, convocó al Fiscal General, Eric Holder, a ser bueno, con la seguridad de que se lo “agradecerán sus hijos, su esposa, su familia y el pueblo norteamericano que, si tuviera conocimiento de este caso, con toda certeza no aceptaría que se sigan violando los derechos humanos de esa familia”. René González salió de la cárcel en octubre del año pasado, pero deberá residir en un “absurdo y distante enclaustramiento” tres años en Estados Unidos bajo la modalidad de “libertad supervisada”. A pesar de que René ha solicitado permiso para viajar temporalmente a Cuba para ver a su hermano, no ha recibido aún respuesta de la justicia norteamericana. Otro capítulo más en el ensañamiento de las autoridades de ese país contra los Cinco Héroes. En reciente carta enviada a su hermano Roberto, René expresa: “desde su insólito destierro, desde la angustia de la separación forzada, en las condiciones de libertad supervisada más absurdas, desde la dignidad de su condición de patriota cubano como lo eres tú y desde el cariño sembrado por la sangre y las vivencias que nos unen, está y estará siempre contigo. Cada vez que asomes la cabeza podrás sentir mi clamor junto al de mis sobrinos”. |

Camagüey, Mar 12. - The innocence of the Cuban Five and the state of necessity for which they were in the United States to thwart terrorists attacks against Cuba and US citizens have been explained in thousands of letters, emails and phone calls to President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder.
