«This year is vital for the future of the Cuban Five because there are elections in United States and it’s necessary that the new administration receives strong international pressure; it’s important that there be solidarity from people like those of Australia to obtain satisfactory and definitive results.»

This was expressed by Roberto González Sehwerert, who is the brother of one of the Cuban anti-terrorists prisoners in jail in the US and one of the lawyers defending their cases. He was one of the speakers during an exchange held Friday among family members of «the Five» and members of the Southern Cross Brigade from Australia and New Zealand. The southern internationalists are participating in activities and volunteer work at the Julio Antonio Mella International Camp in the Havana municipality of Caimito.

The visitors were updated about the case of the Five and the need for increasing the activity of international solidarity movements around the cause.

As Roberto González highlighted, «Our force resides in having moral and ethical reasons to defend the cause, in addition to legal ones.»

The relatives emphasized in the need to increase communication with the five men – René González, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Gerardo Hernández and Fernando González. «They depend on us to not feel isolated; they can keep imprisoned, but not isolated,» pointed out Elizabeth Palmeiro, the wife of Ramón Labañino. Irma Sehwerert, the mother of René González, also participated in the encounter.

The brigade members expressed their gratefulness for the opportunity to come to Cuba and to learn of the details on the situation of the five anti-terrorists, and committed to support the case from their respective countries.

25th Anniversary of the Southern Cross Cruz Brigade

The Cuban Institute of Friendship (ICAP) and the House of Asia and Oceania prepared an exhibition to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Southern Cross Cruz Brigade. The act included the participation of ICAP vice-president Basilio Gutiérrez, Hilda Vassal, the coordinator of the Asia and Oceania House of the International Relations Department of the Central Committee of the PCC; and Teresa Hernández, directer of the host institution.

When inaugurating the exhibition, Gutiérrez referred to the valuable human capital lent by Cuban people in service of the world, while Australian brigade member Peter Hoop expressed, on behalf of his comrades, «there is nothing as beautiful as friendship and fraternity among people.»

«Este año es vital para el futuro de los Cinco, pues hay elecciones en Estados Unidos y es necesario que el nuevo gobierno reciba una fuerte presión internacional; por ello es importante la solidaridad de pueblos como el australiano, para obtener resultados satisfactorios y definitivos».

Así expresó Roberto González Sehwerert, hermano de uno de los antiterroristas cubanos presos en cárceles de EE.UU. y uno de los abogados de la causa, durante el intercambio sostenido ayer entre familiares de los Cinco e integrantes de la Brigada Cruz del Sur —proveniente de Australia y Nueva Zelanda—, en el Campamento Internacional Julio Antonio Mella, del habanero municipio de Caimito.

Los visitantes fueron actualizados sobre el estado del caso de los Cinco, y la necesidad de incrementar la divulgación y los movimientos internacionales de solidaridad con la causa.

Roberto González precisó: «Nuestra fuerza radica en que tenemos razones morales y éticas para defender la causa, además de razones legales».

Los familiares enfatizaron en la necesidad de incrementar la comunicación con René González, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Gerardo Hernández y Fernando González. «De nosotros depende que no se sientan aislados; pueden tenerlos presos, pero no incomunicados», señaló Elizabeth Palmeiro, esposa de Ramón. Irma Sehwerert, madre de René, también participó en el encuentro.

Los brigadistas expresaron su agradecimiento por la oportunidad de venir a Cuba y conocer detalles sobre la situación de los cinco antiterroristas, y se comprometieron a apoyar el caso desde sus países.

Aniversario 25 de la Brigada Cruz del Sur

El Instituto Cubano de Amistad con los Pueblos (ICAP) y la Casa de Asia y Oceanía, prepararon una exposición para conmemorar el aniversario 25 de la Brigada Cruz del Sur. El acto contó con la presencia de Basilio Gutiérrez, vicepresidente del ICAP; Hilda Vasallo, coordinadora para Asia y Oceanía del departamento de Relaciones Internacionales del Comité Central del PCC; y Teresa Hernández, directora de la institución anfitriona.

Al inaugurar la exposición, Gutiérrez refirió que el valioso capital humano del pueblo cubano está al servicio del mundo, mientras que el brigadista australiano Peter Hoop expresó, en nombre de sus compañeros, que «no hay nada más hermoso que la hermandad y la fraternidad entre los pueblos».
