An international campaign for the right of Olga Salanueva and Adriana Perez to visit their husbands will take place between March 8 and May 14

The Cuban Five are halfway through their ninth year in prison. Throughout that time, their human rights have been violated, and in particular the one related to family visits.

"It's been a very tortuous path...even for those among the relatives that have been granted visas. They have only been able to make five or six visits, no more in all that time," explains Olga Salanueva Arango, the wife of Rene Gonzalez Sehwerert, one of the five Cuba antiterrorist fighters unjustly serving time in US Federal prisons.

"I think that in this case they have been exceptionally cruel with the families, especially in the cases of Gerardo Hernandez Nordelo and of Rene," Olga said when commenting on the importance of the campaign for her and Adriana Perez' right to visit their husbands, organized by the International Committee to Free the Cuban Five for March 8 to May 14.

Do you have an appointment date for another interview at the US Interests Section in Havana?

They have fixed the date for the interview on a very special day: September 12, exactly the ninth anniversary of the day the Cuban Five were arrested.

Several of us relatives must wait until that date for an interview and then wait at home for one, two or three months, until they tell you if they have granted the visa. However in my case and Adriana's they have denied the permission to travel on seven occasions.

What are the US authorities' arguments?

They have nothing else to justify the visa denial. Our visa request is for humanitarian reasons. We don't represent any danger to that country.

This is what we are going to state again at the Human Rights Council in Geneva, where we will take our demand again this year.

How did you decide on the encounter between Rene and Ivette [their daughter]?

Precisely because of having to deal with this arbitrary situation.

Already Ivette has grown up a bit, she is almost nine-years-old. She was not yet five months old when Rene was detained. After analyzing what would be the best for the girl, and after a long process of persuasion, of understanding, we decided that she would travel with Irma, her elder sister, and not with all the family which is our desire and our right.

We could not continue to delay the encounter between father and daughter. They both needed it. The most logical thing was that Ivette travel with me, her mother, but who knows how long they are going to continue to deny my right?

Our love goes much farther than a couple. We are a family that was created 25 years ago. There are many things to talk about, but they don't even allow us to that. The communication we exchange by mail is very much controlled and reviewed, telephone calls are also supervised and recorded, and that is not normal communication.

What did Rene say to you after seeing Ivette?

He wrote her a very beautiful letter in which he admits to her that he enjoyed his happiest hours lived all along these years. He said he had to take a deep breath before entering into the hall of the prison where he knew he would find Irmita and Ivette. He says that seeing them both together brought on an indescribable feeling, and that he saw our little girl just as he had dreamed.

And what has Ivette said?

When she returned she said her father was very affectionate and very good, that he looked like grandfather Candido. She also said that she had talked a lot with her father, that she gave him a detailed explanation of what was happening at home, in school, of her friends and neighbors. They immediately established a beautiful and fluid conversation.

She wants to see him again because, above all, she wants for him to return home, because even Ivette's drawings she draws him as if he were at home. She doesn't want to see her father anymore in posters, billboards or signs demanding his freedom.

Anything new in the legal process?

No there is no news. Time continues to pass. Nobody is certain as to when this process will end. Perhaps as we talk there is only months to go or maybe years, which has occurred to date. It makes no sense that besides Adriana and Gerardo, like Rene and I, having to suffer this separation, we can't even see each other.

They say that Luis Posada Carriles will only be tried for immigration charges...

This is the best example of US hypocrisy on the issue of fighting terrorism. They say he will only be tried on immigration charges. Only in the United States could Posada Carriles' long record of terrorist activity be ignored. We are witnessing a huge farce, just like the case put together from the beginning against the Cuban Five.

Hace casi nueve años que los Cinco están en prisión. En todo este periodo se han violado continuamente los derechos humanos de ellos y en particular el relacionado con las visitas de los familiares. "Un camino muy tortuoso, que a propósito han ido complicando, incluso a quienes dentro de los familiares les han otorgado las visas, solo han podido hacer en este tiempo de cinco a seis visitas, no más", afirmó en diálogo con Granma Olga Salanueva Arango, esposa de René González Sehwerert, uno de los cinco luchadores antiterroristas cubanos que cumplen injusta prisión en cárceles federales de Estados Unidos.

El gobierno de EE.UU. se ha ensañado con las familias de los Cinco.

"Pienso que en eso se han ensañado con las familias —dijo—, pero especialmente en los casos de Gerardo (Hernández Nordelo) y de René", comentó al valorar la importancia de la campaña por el derecho de visita de ella y de Adriana Pérez, que a partir de este 8 de Marzo, Día Internacional de la Mujer —y hasta el 14 de mayo—, ha propuesto desarrollar el Comité Internacional por la Libertad de los Cinco.

¿Tienen fecha para la entrevista en la Sección de Intereses de EE.UU. en La Habana?

Nos han dado la entrevista para un día muy particular: el 12 de septiembre, justo cuando se cumple el noveno aniversario del encarcelamiento de los Cinco.

Hasta esa fecha tendremos que aguardar varios familiares para que se nos entreviste y luego esperar en casa uno, dos, tres meses... hasta que te digan si te han dado o no la visa, pero a Adriana y a mí nos han negado en siete ocasiones el permiso para viajar.

¿Qué esgrimen las autoridades norteamericanas?

Ya no tienen qué esgrimir. Nuestra solicitud se realiza por cuestiones humanitarias. No representamos ningún peligro para aquel país.

Así lo vamos a manifestar otra vez en el Consejo de Derechos Humanos de Ginebra, adonde llevaremos nuevamente nuestra denuncia este año.

¿Cómo decidieron el encuentro entre René e Ivette?

Precisamente, ante esta situación arbitraria.

Ya Ivette ha crecido un poco, tiene casi nueve años. Ella no había cumplido los cinco meses cuando René fue detenido.

Después de analizar qué era lo mejor para la niña y tras un largo proceso de persuasión, de comprensión, determinamos que viajara con su hermana mayor Irma y no con toda la familia, que es nuestra justa aspiración y derecho.

No podíamos seguir dilatando el encuentro entre padre e hija. Ambos lo necesitaban. Lo más lógico es que Ivette viaje conmigo, que soy su mamá, pero ¿hasta cuándo van a negarme el derecho que me asiste?

Nuestro amor va más allá de una pareja, somos una familia constituida hace 25 años. Hay muchas cosas de qué conversar, pero ni siquiera eso se nos permite, pues la comunicación que sostenemos es a través de cartas que son revisadas y muy controladas, de llamadas telefónicas que también son supervisadas, grabadas..., y esa no es una comunicación normal.

¿Qué te comentó René después del contacto con Ivette?

Él le escribió a la niña una hermosísima carta sobre eso, le confiesa que disfrutó de las horas más felices que ha vivido durante todos estos años, que tuvo que respirar profundo y muy fuerte antes de entrar en el salón de la cárcel, donde sabía que se iba a encontrar con Irmita e Ivette. Refiere que verlas a las dos juntas le ha causado una sensación indescriptible y que vio en nuestra pequeña a quien había soñado.

¿Y qué ha expresado Ivette?

Cuando regresó dijo que su papá era muy cariñoso y muy bueno, que se le parecía a su abuelo Cándido. También comentó que había hablado mucho con su papá, que le contó pormenores de lo que pasaba en la casa, en la escuela, de sus amistades, vecinos. Entre los dos se estableció enseguida esa comunicación y fue muy lindo.

Ella quiere volver a verlo, pero desea sobre todas las cosas que él venga, porque incluso en sus dibujos Ivette lo pinta aquí en la casa, del lado de acá. No quiere ver más a su papá en afiches, carteles o anuncios por su liberación.

¿Alguna novedad sobre el proceso legal?

No hay noticias. Se sigue extendiendo en el tiempo. Nadie posee la certeza acerca de cuándo se acaba este proceso, quizás en este minuto en que hablamos solo le falten unos meses o tal vez años, como de hecho está ocurriendo, y no es lógico que tanto Adriana como Gerardo, así como René y yo tengamos que sufrir esta separación y además, ni siquiera vernos.

A Luis Posada Carriles dicen que lo juzgarán solo por cargos migratorios...

Es el ejemplo más grande de la hipocresía imperial en el tema de la lucha contra el terrorismo. Dicen que lo juzgarán por cargos migratorios. Únicamente en Estados Unidos puede ignorarse el historial terrorista de Posada Carriles. Es que estamos en presencia de una gran farsa como lo ha sido, desde un inicio, el proceso que les montaron a los Cinco.
