A new international campaign to free the Cuban Five and against terrorism begins on Wednesday around the globe. Marches and demonstrations are planned in front of the US embassies in numerous countries on the day that marks nine years since the Cubans were imprisoned in the United States.

Free the Cuban Five international coordinator Graciela Ramirez told Granma that as part of the activities to inaugurate the campaign, a small plane will fly over Rome with a banner regarding the case and in several places around the world white doves will be released as a symbol of peace.

Ramirez said the effort includes a series of university lectures, a letter campaign to the White House, the distribution of materials about the case and the showing of related documentaries such as The Process, narrated by Danny Glover.

The Cuban Five are serving long sentences in US federal prisons after having been convicted at a politically-charged and irregularity-plagued trial in Miami in 2001. Six years later, their appeal continues before the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals of Atlanta. The railroading of the Cubans, who had only gathered information on groups based in Miami plotting terrorist attacks against Cuba, has drawn the interest of legal experts from around the world.

Ramirez said the new campaign will also emphasize the issue of visas so that Adriana Perez and Olga Salanueva can visit their husbands Gerardo Hernandez and Rene Gonzalez, to date denied by US authorities.

Numerous activities will take place in Cuba during the campaign which is officially scheduled to last until October 8, date marking the 40th anniversary of the death of Ernesto "Che" Guevara.

Hoy en distintos puntos del planeta soltarán palomas blancas como símbolo de paz. Una avioneta sobrevolará Roma con un cartel alusivo a los Cinco, mientras marchas, manifestaciones, plantones y piquetes frente a las embajadas de Estados Unidos marcarán el inicio de la Jornada Internacional por la libertad de los antiterroristas cubanos, encarcelados en territorio norteamericano desde 1998.

Conferencias en universidades, envío de documentos a la Casa Blanca, distribución de materiales explicativos en la vía pública, proyección de documentales como El Proceso, narrado por el actor estadounidense Danny Glover, se cuentan también entre las "múltiples acciones que no se detendrán hasta que los Cinco regresen a su patria", afirmó a Granma Graciela Ramírez, coordinadora del Comité Internacional por la Libertad de los Cinco.

En ese sentido explicó que la jornada, si bien está prevista hasta el 8 de octubre, fecha en que se rememorarán los 40 años de la caída en combate del Guerrillero Heroico, continuará extendiéndose "porque en muchos países se prevén actividades en fechas posteriores".

Esta campaña mundial, dedicada además a la lucha contra el terrorismo, pondrá énfasis asimismo en el tema de las visas para las visitas de Adriana Pérez y Olga Salanueva, esposas de Gerardo y René, respectivamente.

Cuba será escenario de numerosas actividades en apoyo a la batalla por la liberación de los Cinco, cuyo anhelado regreso, sabemos, será fruto de la movilización mundial, como la que se reedita y gana fuerzas desde hoy.
