Gerardo Hernández Congratulates Cuban Publication on its 40th Anniversary
Dec. 16, 2008 SANTA CLARA , Cuba, Dec 16 dic (AIN) Gerardo Hernández, a Hero of the Republic of Cuba , sent a message of congratulation to the workers of the comic publication Melaíto, which will celebrate the 40th anniversary of its founding on December 20. By way of Alicia Jrapko, from the International Free the Five Committee, Gerardo sent his message from his maximum security prison in Victorville, California, where he’s serving two life sentences plus 15 years for monitoring the activities of terrorist groups based in south Florida. Hernández, along with René González, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino and Fernando González were arrested by the FBI on September 12, 1998, and then, without any real evidence, were given unjustly harsh sentences. Gerardo says that he received many letters every day, “and every now and then I’m surprised by a copy of Melaíto among them”. He commented that he has realized that the good artistic quality of the publication keeps constantly growing. This anti-terrorism fighter excels as a caricaturist, and has contributed some of his works to different publications, among them Melaíto, whose workers made a mural in 2006 dedicated to The Five at the Maestra Nicolasa Park in this city, and on the occasion of the publication’s new birthday they’re planning to create another collective work, against terrorism and in favor of peace. Melaíto director, Pedro Méndez, told ACN that he remembers when Gerardo started taking his first steps in humour and caricature, and highlights how –like the rest of his companions in different US prisons –he has not lost his sense of fun and joy. "There are more than enough reasons to congratulate you on this new anniversary, and talking about anniversaries, I’d also like to congratulate –on behalf of The Five—all of its readers for the 50th anniversary of our Revolution, and wish them a 2009 full of success", the anti-terrorism fighter points out in his message. My thanks to the people of Villa Clara for their countless demonstrations of love and support toward their brothers now prisoners of the Empire!, concludes the message.
