HAVANA, Cuba, March 9 (acn) The case of the Cuban Five, unfairly imprisoned in the United States for over a decade, was denounced by relatives of former Lebanese and Palestinian prisoners in Israel.

During a ceremony to mark International Women's Day in Beirut, members of the Lebanese Committee to Free the Cuban Five met in front of the International Red Cross's headquarters in the city, reported Prensa Latina.

Cubans Gerardo Hernandez, Rene Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero and Fernando Gonzalez, known as the Cuban Five, were sentenced in 2001 to terms ranging from 15 years in prison to double life imprisonment for having tried to stop criminal actions planned by Miami-based anti-Cuba groups against their country.

Relatives of Lebanese Anwar Yassine, who was kept 17 years in Israeli jails; the sister Palestinian female martyr Dalal Moghrabi and the brother of Samir Kantar, who was released from prison in 2008 after being held for nearly 30 years, sent a letter asking the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to support the cause of the Cuban Five.

The letter, received by Christian Cardon head of the press office of the organization in Lebanon, expressed their hope for the ICRC to play a more important role in the reaffirmation of the right of wives of two of the Cuban prisoners to visit their husbands in jail.

The message says: "We have come here today on the occasion of the International Women's Day to also call on all women of the world to join our demand for the rights of Olga (Salanueva) and Adriana (Perez) to visit their husbands."

The U.S government has repeatedly denied Olga Salanueva and Adriana Perez, wives of Rene Gonzalez and Gerardo Hernandez respectively, visas to travel to the United States to visit their husbands in jail.

Beirut, 8 mar (PL) Familiares de ex prisioneros libaneses y palestinos en Israel denunciaron aquí el caso de cinco antiterroristas cubanos presos en Estados Unidos durante un acto con motivo del Día Internacional de la Mujer, que se conmemora hoy.

Miembros del Comité Libanés por la Liberación de los Cinco Héroes, como son considerados los cubanos Gerardo Hernández, René González, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero y Fernando González, se concentraron ante el Comité Internacional de la Cruz Roja (CICR) en esta capital.

Los Cinco fueron condenados a penas que van desde 15 años de cárcel hasta doble cadena perpetua por impedir planes terroristas contra su país, organizados desde Miami.

Familiares de Anwar el Yassine, quien permaneció 17 años en prisiones israelíes, la hermana de la mártir Dalal Moghrabi y el hermano Samir Kantar, que fue liberado en 2008 tras casi 30 anos de encierro, entregaron una carta a un funcionario de esa entidad.

La misiva recibida por Christian Cardon, jefe de la oficina de prensa del CICR en el Líbano, expresa esperanza de que ese ente desempeñe un papel más importante en la reafirmación del derecho de las esposas de dos de los prisioneros cubanos a visitarlos.

“Hemos venido hoy aquí con motivo del Día Internacional de la Mujer para también hacer un llamamiento a las mujeres del mundo para que se sumen a nuestro reclamo por el derecho de Olga (Salanueva) y Adriana (Pérez) a visitar a sus esposos”, indica el mensaje.

Cardon prometió a los activistas canalizar su pedido, tras lo cual éstos fueron recibidos por el embajador cubano aquí, Darío de Urra, y otros diplomáticos a los que trasmitieron una felicitación para todas las mujeres familiares de los patriotas encarcelados.
