Gerardo Hernández: ten birthdays without his Bonsai...

por Roberto Pérez Betancourt

Reprinted from Daily Granma

When Gerardo Hernandez Nordelo of the Cuban Five wakes up behind bars in his US prison tomorrow, June 4, he will turn 43, having spent the last 10 years without his Bonsái.

A person can be trained to put up with all types of ordeals, with their physical and mental strength fed by the conviction that their ideals justify sacrifices beyond any injustice, but no one can suppress all their feelings all the time. For that reason, on this special Wednesday, Gerardo will have with him the memories of the living treasure of his life: Adriana Perez O'Conner, who he poetically dubbed "My Bonsai."

She is the woman he married 24 years ago, who accompanied him through the paths of life, all of them, including the one that led him to be unjustly imprisoned.

His complaint, his demand, a silent scream within him so the enemy can't rejoice with sadism, is to denounce those maneuvering against their own laws and justice, centered their hate and vengeance against five noble men. Gerardo, just as his comrades Ramon Labañino, Rene Gonzalez, Fernando Gonzalez and Antonio Guerrero, knows the importance of the actions they carried out in the United States to gather information on the terrorist plots being organized there against Cuba and warn their government.

The Cuban Five were arrested in September 1998 under false charges and after an irregularity-plagued and politically-charged trial in Miami were sentenced between them to a total of four life sentences and 77 years in prison.

It didn't matter that a panel of UN experts declared the legal basis of the detention as arbitrary, nor when a three judge panel of the Court of Appeals of Atlanta, Georgia overturned their convictions and sentences.

The alienated mind of George W. Bush —the most unpopular president in US history, according to recent polls—, along with his advisors, frustrated by larger anti-Cuban efforts, gave the order to impede by all means any justice for the Cubans, whose mission in Miami was to inform their country of the terrorist plans against Cuba being plotted there.

Gerardo was given two life sentences and 15 years in prison.

Prestigious and independent legal experts coincide that that charges were false as well as the improper legal proceedings against Gerardo and his co-defendants.

So far the Cuban Five have spent 117 months in prison; some of them confined to "the hole" a brutal form of punishment.

This reality will be present in Gerardo's head on his 43rd birthday. But he knows that his ideas cannot be imprisoned, and that the thoughts and the efforts of millions of fellow citizens and friends accompany him on his birthday, not in the prison, but in the freedom of his ideals.
