According to the dictionary, solidarity has many definitions: help, defense, support, etc., just what the Cuban Five (imprisoned since 1998) have received since 2001 when their case became known.

Antonio Guerrero, Rene Gonzalez, Gerardo Hernandez, Fernando Gonzalez and Ramon Labañino begin their tenth year in prison on Wednesday, convicted of crimes they didn’t commit. Their only "offense" was to protect Cuba and the United States from terrorist acts organized with impunity from US territory.

Granma asked Antonio Guerrero by letter to write on the topic of solidarity. From Florence, Colorado, the prison where he is serving a life plus ten-year sentence, Tony replied:

THE LETTER FROM THE FARTHEST PLACE

"It took me a while to answer the question about the letter of support received from the place most distant from Florence. First I had to remember the places from where I’ve received messages of support and encouragement, from regions of Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia," said Tony.

"I made a map of the world and began to locate countries and cities from where people had written me. Then came the most difficult part; calculating the distances. The Earth is round…"

The number of people demanding the Cuban Five be freed continues to grow

"I got some help from someone to find a map with the longitudes and latitudes. That was a big step. Florence (or Florence, Colorado) is located at around 100 degrees west longitude from Greenwich (this is an approximation). I looked at the longitudes of cities and countries: Moscow (Russia), Tokyo (Japan), Victoria (Australia), Cape Town (South Africa) and New Delhi (India).

"According to my calculation India was the country farthest from Florence of the countries from where I’ve received a letter. If my memory doesn’t betray me, the letter came from our embassy in that country. New Delhi is located at approximately 80 degrees east longitude. We can almost say that it is the most distant place from Florence as far as longitude goes, that is, it is exactly 180 degrees of difference.

"In miles the estimate is 12,000 miles, which converted into kilometers (multiplying by 1.609) equals 19,308 kilometers. (I hope our geographers don’t laugh at these calculations). So my answer is India.’

LOVE AND ADMIRATION

"Now that I’m on the subject of the letters we’ve received and the countries from where people have written, I am going to give some mental statistics on a topic that shows how much our people are loved around the world and how much the Revolution is admired: Excluding Cuba, most of the letters I have received came from Europe.

"Of the 38 countries that my calculations say make up the current European continent (that’s another discussion: the word continent, because you’d have to include Asia) the most letters of support have come from the United Kingdom.

"Now, from how many of the 38 countries have people written? Here I’ll mention every country I can remember: Portugal, Spain, France, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Austria, Slovenia, Greece, Czech Republic, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia, Sweden, Norway and Ireland, which makes a total of 20 countries.

"There may be letters from other countries of the region, but that’s what I remember."

TSUNAMI OF SOLIDARITY

"It would be a long, complex and interesting task to explain each show of solidarity, support encouragement and affection that we’ve received from around the world. One day we’ll do it, nobody should doubt it. But for now, I can say that they have all had an immense importance for the five of us and all have a place in our hearts.

"Without a doubt our friends have taught us to learn the geography of our planet better; they have taken us to travel to their lands, and with them we have climbed mountains, crossed rivers, admired forests and grasslands. They have given us the opportunity to get to know their traditions and their history. They have taken us into their homes in which we have spoken in the most beautiful language, that of friendship and peace.

"None of the Cuban Five could have imagined that behind the cruel and unjust sentences we received would come all these waves of friendship and love; a great tsunami of solidarity that took its waters to five distant prisons, breaking the walls and clearing the path to a safe return home, which is where these waves of friendship and justice will take us.

"There are still a million things to say; for example the case of the Japanese woman who wrote me one day from Tokyo in Spanish saying that she was working on the translation of my book of poetry book From My Vantage Point. Then there’s the girl from Turkey who sent me a photo and painting of her mother; the French students who consider me one of their classmates; the friend from Greece who, with her British father, always writes me. There’s the letters from our internationalist doctors. Look, the list is never-ending and it’s unfair not to mention everyone. It’s something incredible and marvelous, something that gives us an invincible strength, like that of our already invincible people."

Solidaridad, según el diccionario, tiene múltiples acepciones: apoyo, defensa, respaldo, ayuda... , justo eso es lo que han recibido a partir del año 2001 los cinco antiterroristas cubanos —prisioneros desde 1998 en cárceles de Estados Unidos—, cuando se dio a conocer su historia.

Antonio Guerrero, René González, Gerardo Hernández, Fernando González y Ramón Labañino, inician hoy su décimo año en cautiverio, acusados de crímenes que no cometieron. El único "delito" fue intentar preservar a Cuba y a EE.UU. de acciones terroristas fraguadas y aupadas con toda impunidad en territorio estadounidense.

Acerca del tema de la solidaridad preguntó Granma en carta a Antonio Guerrero. Desde Florence, Colorado, la cárcel del imperio donde cumple una condena de por vida más diez años, Tony respondió:

LA CARTA MÁS DISTANTE

"Me quedé pensando para responder el lugar del mundo más distante de Florence, desde el cual había recibido una carta solidaria. Tuve primero que hacer memoria de los sitios desde donde me habían llegado mensajes de apoyo y aliento, desde regiones de Europa, Asia, África y Australia", explica Tony.

Más adelante refiere: "Me hice un mapa mundi y comencé a ubicar países y ciudades desde donde me habían escrito. Luego vino lo más difícil, cómo calcular las distancias. La Tierra es redonda...

"Logré con ayuda de alguien encontrar un mapa con las longitudes y las latitudes. Ya eso era un gran paso. Florence, (o Florencia de Colorado) viene estando en la longitud oeste 100 grados de Greenwich (esto es un aproximado). Busqué las longitudes de las ciudades y países ubicados: Moscú (Rusia), Tokio (Japón), Victoria (Australia), Cape Town (Sudáfrica) y Nueva Delhi (India).

"Todo esto aproximadamente y calculé, según la escala del mapa usado, las distancias. Lógicamente, tú debes analizar en dos direcciones: la este y la oeste, porque como sabemos somos un globo no un plano.

"De acuerdo a mi cálculo resultó la India el país más distante de Florence del cual he recibido alguna carta. Esta, si mi memoria no me traiciona, me llegó desde nuestra embajada en ese país. Delhi está aproximadamente en la longitud oeste 80 grados de Greenwich, es decir que casi podemos considerar que es el punto más distante en lo que a longitud se refiere ya que tiene exactamente 180 grados de diferencia.

"El cálculo arrojó unas 12 000 millas, las que para llevarlas a kilómetros tendrían que multiplicarse por 1,609 y nos daría la cantidad de 19 308 kilómetros (espero que nuestros geógrafos no se rían mucho de estos cálculos). Así que mi respuesta es: la India."

¡CUÁNTO SE AMA A NUESTRO PUEBLO!

"Y ya que estoy en el tema de las cartas que hemos recibido y países desde donde nos han escrito, tema que expone cuánto se ama a nuestro pueblo en el mundo y cuánto se admira a la Revolución, voy a ofrecer algunos datos, haciendo uso de mi mente:

"Excepto de Cuba, es de Europa desde donde más personas nos han escrito", asegura en su misiva.

"De los 38 países que según mi cálculo conforman actualmente el continente europeo (eso es otra discusión: la palabra continente, porque tendría que abarcar a Asia) es del Reino Unido desde donde más amigos han enviado algún mensaje de apoyo.

"Ahora bien, ¿de cuántos de estos 38 países nos han escrito?, pues aquí menciono cada país que llevo en mi memoria: Portugal, España, Francia, Suiza, Italia, Bélgica, Alemania, Dinamarca, Austria, Eslovenia, Grecia, República Checa, Polonia, Belarús, Ucrania, Rusia, Suecia, Noruega, e Irlanda lo cual hace un total de 20 naciones.

"No descarto que existan cartas de otros países de esta región, pero es lo que recuerdo."

TSUNAMI DE SOLIDARIDAD

"Larga, compleja, e interesante —expresó—, sería la tarea de explicar cada muestra de solidaridad, de apoyo, de aliento y cariño que hemos recibido desde tantos rincones del mundo. Un día lo haremos, eso nadie lo dude. Puedo por el momento decir que todas han tenido un valor inmenso para los Cinco y todas tienen un lugar en nuestros corazones.

"Sin duda nuestros amigos nos han enseñado a conocer mejor la geografía de nuestro planeta, ellos nos han llevado a viajar a sus pueblos, con ellos hemos escalado montañas, atravesado ríos, hemos admirado bosques y praderas, ellos nos han dado la oportunidad de conocer sus costumbres y su historia, ellos nos han llevado a sus hogares en donde hemos conversado en el lenguaje más hermoso, el de la amistad y la paz.

"Ninguno de los Cinco podíamos pensar que tras las cruentas e injustas condenas que recibimos vendrían todas estas olas de amistad y amor, un gran tsunami de solidaridad que llevaba sus aguas hasta cinco distantes prisiones y rompía muros y limpiaba el camino para el seguro regreso a la patria, adonde esas olas de amistad y justicia nos llevarán.

"Quedan por decir un millón de cosas; por ejemplo: el caso de la japonesa, que un día me escribió desde Tokio en español, diciéndome que trabajaba en la traducción del poemario Desde mi altura; la niña de Turquía que me envió foto y pintura de su mamá; los estudiantes de Francia que me consideran como uno más en su aula; la amiga de Grecia que con un pobre inglés me escribe siempre; las cartas de nuestros médicos internacionalistas¼ Mira, es interminable la lista y difícil e injusto dejar de mencionar a todos. Es algo increíble y maravilloso, algo que nos ha dado una fuerza invencible y eso que lo que nos da nuestro pueblo ya es de por sí invencible."
