GENEVA, March 11.— A message from five Cubans serving harsh sentences in US prisons for preventing terrorist actions against their country was read in Geneva before the UN Council of Human Rights Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, informed Prensa Latina.

Olga Salanueva, wife of Rene Gonzalez, one of the Cuban Five, read the document signed by her husband and Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero, Ramon Labanino and Fernando Gonzalez.

Leila Zerrougui, president of the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, recalled that in May it will be three years since the office she heads declared the detention and imprisonment of the Cuban Five illegal and arbitrary.

The Cuban Five noted that the statement from the UN Working Group back in 2005 opened a path to decency in their judicial process after seven years of imprisonment, in an environment of solitary confinement, separation from their children. The case against the Five has been characterized by manipulation of evidence, blackmail of witnesses and intimidation of the jury.

Salanueva and Adriana Perez (wife of Geraldo Hernandez) have a packed agenda of meetings with UN officials, and others from the Vatican, World Council of Churches and solidarity organizations.

In their message, the Cuban Five emphasized: "All the ploys against us, enacted in a media circus atmosphere, have sought to protect the terrorists that motivated our presence in the United States."

"Three years after the honorable declaration (by the UN Working Group) was issued, the farce continues. Another equally solid and honorable ruling by the appeals court was buried under a muddle of dark conspiratorial procedures," wrote the Cuban Five.

"The most dangerous terrorists of the Western Hemisphere walk free on the streets of Miami and receive protection while our children become teenagers or adults far from the warmth of their fathers," they added.

GINEBRA, 11 de marzo.— Un mensaje de los Cinco luchadores antiterroristas cubanos prisioneros en Estados Unidos, fue leído hoy aquí ante el Grupo de Trabajo sobre Detenciones Arbitrarias del Consejo de Derechos Humanos (CDH) de Naciones Unidas, dio a conocer PL.

Olga Salanueva, esposa de René González, tuvo a su cargo la lectura del texto firmado también por Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino y Fernando González.

En el diálogo interactivo con Leila Zerrougui, presidenta del Grupo de trabajo sobre Detenciones Arbitrarias, se recordó que en mayo próximo se cumplen tres años desde que ese estamento del CDH declaró ilegales y arbitrarias las reclusiones de los Cinco.

Con esa postura, se estaba abriendo paso la decencia en nuestro proceso después de siete años de cárcel, bajo un clima de confinamiento solitario, abuso de nuestros hijos, manipulación de evidencias, chantaje a testigos e intimidación del jurado, dijeron.

Salanueva y Adriana Pérez —esposa de Gerardo Hernández—, cumplen en Ginebra una apretada agenda de reuniones con funcionarios de Naciones Unidas, la Santa Sede, el Consejo Mundial de Iglesias y grupos de solidaridad.

En el mensaje, los héroes cubanos recalcaron que "todas las maniobras en su contra en un ambiente de circo mediático persiguen proteger a terroristas que motivaron nuestra presencia en Estados Unidos".

"Tres años después de que la honorable declaración [del Grupo de Trabajo sobre Detenciones Arbitrarias del CDH] fuera hecha, la farsa continúa. Otra declaración del tribunal de apelación, que es igualmente sólido y honorable, se ha enterrado bajo enredo de cómplices procedimientos sombríos", explicaron.

"Los terroristas más letales del hemisferio occidental caminan ya por las calles de Miami libremente y gozan de la protección, mientras nuestros niños se convierten en adolescentes o adultos, lejos del calor de sus padres", añadieron.
