Birthday Greetings to Fidel from the Cuban Five

On this 81st birthday we wish you good health and vitality, and many more birthdays that we can celebrate together in our beautiful country. I hope that the happiness I wish you multiplies as I also enjoy knowing of your recovery. One year ago today, after learning of the adverse decision by the judges in our case, and despite your delicate health, you wrote a note to us assuring that we will win over this monstrous injustice. On the 39th minute of the first hour of your birthday, from your sick bed and with your own handwriting, you wrote us that perennial conviction in victory that characterizes you. Your gesture will always be engraved in my consciousness as a revolutionary Cuban, as one of the many personal reasons why you will always be our Commander in Chief. Happy Birthday! For some reason, August has been a month of important happenings in the legal battle against the monstrous injustice that keeps us in prison. We can say, in an almost poetic style, that the case proceeds "at the pace of August," a slow pace, if you take into account that our direct appeal hasn’t even been concluded in five years of arguments, analysis and rulings. On this coming August 20 another oral hearing takes place before a panel of judges of the Appeals Court of Atlanta. There, we are confident, that once again our truth "will take justice to a place where the greed of men can’t reach it." We don’t know when a ruling will come from the panel, but I can reaffirm that the five of us are firm and calm; at the level of our people, ready to face anything with the conviction in a final victory as we were taught by Che. We receive your Reflections and we read them carefully and with pleasure. They educate us, guide us and strengthen us. They have shown us the process of your recovery and that you are at the head of our colossal and transcendental Battle of Ideas. On a daily basis we also receive numerous letters of encouragement and support from our beloved country and all corners of the planet. In reading what children, university students, workers, CDR members, civilian collaborators abroad and the people in general, as well as friends of Cuba in the world have to say, we strongly feel in our hearts the complete certainty of your warning to the Empire: "You will never have Cuba!" "Later, chance became something fortunate to me, something that I became gradually aware, as I learned that it was my birthday and later discovering that it was also Fidel’s. As time went on, more people around me made me took note of it. "I remember the military unit I was in when Fidel turned 50, and we wrote a collective letter and when we signed our names; my comrades wished me a happy 20th birthday, a beautiful experience I will never forget. Rene, who is serving an unjust sentence in the Marianna, Florida prison, turns 51 today. His wife, Olga Salanueva, said in a telephone conversation on Saturday that Rene had sent an e-mail on August first, a message of congratulations to the Commander in Chief. The message has still not arrived. I can imagine your struggle for life, your tremendous will and iron discipline applied to the task of maintaining your invaluable presence among those who love you around the world. Mensajes al Comandante en Jefe de nuestros Héroes luchadores antiterroristas, desde las cárceles del imperio

Querido Fidel: Este año transcurrido ha sido de gran optimismo y júbilo, al conocer su virtuosa batalla diaria por la vida y su plena recuperación. Nos sentimos profundamente orgullosos de contar con un Comandante de la estirpe de Titanes, de aquellos que nunca abandonan batallas ni claudican a los sueños. Usted es nuestro mayor ejemplo y guía. En este 81 cumpleaños, le deseamos toda la salud y vitalidad, que cumpla muchísimos más y que los futuros aniversarios los celebremos todos juntos en nuestra bella patria. Convicción en la victoria Querido Comandante en Jefe: Reciba mi más calurosa felicitación y mi abrazo en su cumpleaños este 13 de agosto. En esta ocasión la felicidad que le deseo se multiplica y la disfruto también al saberle recuperado. Hace un año hoy, además, a raíz de la insólita decisión adversa de los jueces en nuestro caso, a pesar de su delicado estado de salud, salió de su puño una nota para nosotros cinco asegurándonos que venceremos la monstruosa injusticia. A los treinta y nueve minutos de la primera hora en el día de su cumpleaños, desde su lecho de convaleciente en recuperación, con el trazo en su caligrafía propio de quien yace en reposo, usted nos transmitía de su puño y letra esa sempiterna convicción en la victoria que le caracteriza. Su gesto quedará para siempre en mi conciencia de revolucionario cubano, como una de las tantas muestras, esta más cercana en lo personal, de las razones por las cuales usted es y será siempre nuestro Comandante en Jefe. ¡Feliz cumpleaños! Fernando González Llort Sus ideas son la esencia de nuestro pueblo Querido Fidel: ¡Feliz Cumpleaños!, desde una prisión del Imperio, en donde lo llevo cada día en mi corazón. Ha dispuesto el azar, o quién sabe qué otra cosa, que haya sido agosto un mes de hechos importantes en la batalla legal contra la monstruosa injusticia que nos mantiene en prisión. Casi podríamos decir, de una forma que parece algo poética, que el caso marcha "a paso de agosto", paso lento, si se tiene en cuenta que nuestra apelación directa ni siquiera se ha definido en 5 años de argumentos, análisis y decisiones. Este próximo 20 de agosto tendrá lugar otra audiencia oral ante el panel de jueces de la Corte de Apelaciones de Atlanta. Allí, estamos seguros, una vez más nuestra razón "levantará la justicia donde no pueden alcanzarla las avaricias de los hombres". No sabemos cuándo vendrá una nueva respuesta de este panel, pero le reafirmo que los cinco estamos firmes y serenos, a la altura de nuestro pueblo, listos para enfrentar lo que sea con la convicción en la victoria siempre a la que nos enseñó el Che. Aquí llegan sus Reflexiones, que leemos con detenimiento y agrado. Ellas nos educan, nos guían y nos fortalecen. Ellas nos van mostrando su franco proceso de recuperación y que se mantiene al frente de nuestra colosal y trascendental Batalla de Ideas. Aquí también llegan, día tras día, numerosas cartas de aliento y apoyo desde la amada patria y desde todos los rincones del planeta. Al leer lo que nos escriben pioneros, universitarios, trabajadores, cederistas, colaboradores civiles, pueblo en general, así como amigos de Cuba en el mundo, sentimos con fuerza en nuestro pecho la rotunda certeza de su afirmación al Imperio: "¡Le aseguro no tendrán jamás a Cuba!" Las ideas justas que Usted, Comandante en Jefe, nos inculca cada día jamás morirán. Ellas son ya la esencia de todo nuestro pueblo heroico e invencible. ¡Viva la Revolución! Un fuerte abrazo revolucionario, Antonio Guerrero Rodríguez Feliz coincidencia "El cumplir años el 13 de agosto es, por supuesto, un accidente del calendario, una probabilidad en 365 que se dio a pesar de que según la mitología familiar la Vieja quería aguantarse hasta el 14, por aquello de que aquí en los Estados Unidos, donde nací, el 13 es un número de mala suerte. "Luego el accidente se me fue revelando en una coincidencia afortunada, proceso que se me fue manifestando de a poco en la medida en que adquiría primero conciencia de que era la fecha de mi cumpleaños y luego descubría que también era la de Fidel. Paulatinamente, más personas a mi alrededor me lo fueron haciendo notar. "Recuerdo cuando Fidel cumplió los 50, en la Unidad Militar en que me encontraba le hicimos una carta colectiva y al tiempo que yo ponía mi firma, los compañeros me felicitaban a mí también por cumplir los 20, fue una experiencia tan hermosa que no la olvido. "En fin, el que la Vieja no pudiera aguantar esos otros 15 minutos para que diera la primera campanada del 14 de agosto, se convirtió en una coincidencia que para mí es un compromiso, por todo lo que representa Fidel y como revolucionario cubano haber nacido el mismo día que él es una satisfacción y es un constante estímulo para ser mejor". Así valoró René González Sehwerert, en un trabajo publicado en nuestras páginas el pasado año, la coincidencia de haber nacido, al igual que nuestro Comandante en Jefe, un 13 de agosto. René, quien cumple injusta sanción en la prisión de Marianna, Florida, arriba hoy a sus 51 años. René envió por correo, el primero de agosto, un mensaje de felicitación al Comandante en Jefe, según le confirmó a su esposa Olga Salanueva, en conversación telefónica ayer. El mensaje no ha llegado aún. Mensaje de René, otro héroe prisionero del imperio 13 de agosto del 2007 "Año 49 de la Revolución" Querido Fidel: Hoy hace un año que su pueblo celebrara esta fecha, cada uno en su trinchera, con la serena disposición de seguir construyendo el proyecto al que ha dedicado usted su fecunda existencia. Puedo imaginar su lucha por la vida, su derroche de voluntad, y su férrea disciplina; aplicados a preservar su invaluable presencia entre quienes le queremos alrededor del mundo. Los otros, los que odian y destruyen —conjurando en vano a todos sus demonios, mientras juntos usted y su pueblo les propinan otra golpiza que nos trae a celebrar hoy, teniéndole entre nosotros, su nuevo cumpleaños. Ha sido una victoria multiplicada, que hemos conquistado como uno. Ante los ojos de todos, el premio de un enemigo desconcertado y atrapado en sus mentiras. We are profoundly proud to have a commander from the lineage of the titans, of those who never abandon battles, who never relinquish their dreams. You are our best guide and example.
