Havana, April 11(acn) New actions to support the release of the Cuban Five were presented by social activists from several Latin American and Caribbean countries in Havana.

After a call made by Cuban Parliament President Ricardo Alarcón to prioritize the fight for the release of the Cuban anti-terrorist fighters unfairly imprisoned in the U.S, participants in the Seventh Hemispheric Encounter Against Free Trade Agreements proposed a series of initiatives to achieve the release of Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Fernando Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero and Rene Gonzalez, known as The Cuban Five.

The president of the Cuban parliament encouraged the 350 participants from 32 countries at the forum to urge the U.S. government to allow the wives and other family members of the Five to visit them in jail.

Alarcon explained that the U.S. media has maintained a virtual silence about what he called a "biased trial" against the Cuban anti-terrorists.

He warned that the struggle for the release of the Cuban Five is going to be hard as long as U.S. public opinion is not involved.

Delegates from Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Honduras, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic and Argentina, among others backed the statements of the president of the Cuban parliament and proposed concrete actions to support the case.

Ivan Rodriguez, with the Dominican Solidarity-with-Cuba Campaign suggested that all Latin American social movements carry out a protest in front of the U.S. embassies to their countries on September 12, the day in which the Cuban Five were arrested back in 1998.

Beinozus Smukle, from Argentina, said postcards and emails demanding the release of the Five could be sent to all the diplomatic missions in Washington D.C.

Another initiative was to create a commission within the Continental Social Alliance to support the Five's cause.

La Habana, 10 abr (AIN) Ricardo Alarcón, presidente del Parlamento cubano, llamó hoy a los movimientos sociales de América Latina y el Caribe dar prioridad a la lucha por la libertad de los Cinco antiterroristas cubanos presos injustamente en Estados Unidos.

El también miembro del Buró Político del Partido Comunista de Cuba realizó una intervención especial ante los más de 350 delegados de 32 países, que asisten al VII Encuentro Hemisférico de lucha contra los Tratados de Libre Comercio, que sesiona en el Palacio de las Convenciones.

Exhortó a reclamar al gobierno de EE.UU. el derecho de las esposas y demás familiares a visitar a los patriotas cubanos Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Fernando González, Antonio Guerrero y René González, Los Cinco como se les conoce internacionalmente.

Precisó que el amañado caso contra los antiterroristas es sistemáticamente silenciado y tergiversado por la gran prensa norteamericana, por orden del Imperio, con el propósito de mantener la impunidad del terrorismo contra Cuba.

Alarcón alertó que esta será una batalla muy difícil de ganar, mientras no se logre movilizar a la opinión pública norteamericana, la cual obligue al sistema judicial estadounidense hacer justicia y liberar inmediata e incondicionalmente a Los Cinco.

Delegados de México, Venezuela, Colombia, Honduras, Costa Rica, Dominicana y Argentina, entre otros, respaldaron los pronunciamientos del Presidente del Parlamento cubano y formularon acciones concretas de respaldo a los Cinco.

Iván Rodríguez, de la Campaña Dominicana de Solidaridad con Cuba, propuso que el próximo 12 de septiembre los movimientos sociales protesten frente a las embajadas de Estados Unidos en Latinoamérica.

Beinozus Smukle, de Argentina, sugirió el envío de postales y correos electrónicos a las misiones diplomáticas en Washington D.C. con similares propósitos.

Además, se propuso crear una comisión en la Alianza Social Continental de apoyo a esta justa causa.

En el plenario participaron familiares de Los Cinco.
