BRUSSELS, July 20.— European Parliament member Willy Meyer denounced Friday that the United States authorities denied permission for a delegation of the United Left of the European Parliament to visit the Cuban Five, held in US prisons for having gathered information in Miami to prevent terrorist attacks against Cuba.

"This violates the basic principles of justice, under the most atrocious conditions, including isolation," states a press release from the EU legislative group.

A Europa Press report further quotes the statement: "This is an unacceptable action by the US authorities in relation to the five Cuban prisoners that have been abusively detained," and confirms that "The US is not only violating the basic human rights of five prisoners but also the basic principles of International and Humanitarian Law."

Meyer explains that the US authorities refused to allow the members of the European Parliament to visit the Cuban political prisoners "under the excuse that they didn't know them personally before they were imprisoned."

Meyer adds, "This denial by the US authorities is unacceptable" and "confirms the political motivation behind the incarceration of the five Cubans." Meyer denounced Washington's decision and insisted on the "absolutely legal" nature of the request by the EU parliament members to visit the imprisoned Cubans.

"We invite all political forces, the trade union movement and the pro Human Rights organizations to condemn this new act of provocation by the United States and to strengthen their solidarity with the Cuban Five and insist on their immediate release," Meyer concluded.

La Habana, 21 jul (AIN) Con una inaceptable excusa, las autoridades pertinentes de Estados Unidos negaron a diputados del Parlamento Europeo la autorización para visitar en cárceles del imperio a cinco antiterroristas cubanos condenados en amañado juicio a largas penas de reclusión.

Así lo denunció el eurodiputado de Izquierda Unida Willy Meyer, quien lo consideró una violación de los principios básicos de justicia bajo las condiciones más atroces, incluido el aislamiento, según indica un comunicado en ese sentido difundido por la agencia Europa Press.

Señala el texto que este es otro acto inaceptable de las autoridades de Estados Unidos en relación con los cinco presos cubanos que han sido detenidos abusivamente, y agrega que con ello Washington no sólo está violando los derechos humanos básicos de los prisioneros cubanos, sino también los principios de base del Derecho Internacional y humanitario.

La pretendida excusa de que no los conocían personalmente antes de su encarcelamiento fue considerada por Meyer como otra provocación total a la opinión pública democrática mundial.

Abunda Meyer a ese respecto que tal actitud confirma la motivación política que existe detrás del encarcelamieto de René González,Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Ramòn Labañino y Fernando González, e insiste en la demanda absolutamente legal de los eurodiputados para visitar a estos presos políticos en EE.UU.
