Hugo Chavez Challenges CNN’s Patricia Janiot to Interview the Cuban Five

During a meeting with political activists in Caracas on Thursday, Chavez reproached CNN’s Patricia Janiot for an interview with terrorist Raul Diaz, a fugitive from the Venezuelan justice. The head of state added that Janiot asked him through Twitter to reply to his request directly. “I challenge you to interview one of the five Cubans imprisoned in the United States. The issue is not with me, Mrs Patricia; it’s with the dignity of a people,” he noted. Although Diaz was sentenced in Venezuela to nine years for planting bombs in the Spanish and Colombian embassies in 2003, Janiot did not introduced him as a terrorist but as a student seeking refuge in the United States. Gerardo Hernandez, Rene Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, Ramon Labañino and Fernando Gonzalez —internationally known as the Cuban Five— were arrested and given harsh and unjust sentences for monitoring anti-Cuba extreme right-wing groups in South Florida that were planning and carrying out terrorist actions against the island.

17 de septiembre de 2010 Caracas, 16 sep (PL) El presidente venezolano, Hugo Chávez, retó hoy a la periodista Patricia Janiot a que entreviste a cinco antiterroristas cubanos presos en Estados Unidos, en una nueva crítica a la presunta objetividad de la presentadora y del canal televisivo CNN. Chávez, quien la víspera reprochó una entrevista realizada por Janiot a un terrorista venezolano, y la calificó como instrumento del imperialismo, indicó que la periodista le solicitó a través de la red social twitter el derecho a réplica en directo. La cosa no es conmigo, señora, es con la dignidad de los pueblos, le señaló el mandatario durante un acto público con mujeres del Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela. La reto a que entreviste a uno de los héroes cubanos allá en Estados Unidos, dé una demostración de ecuanimidad, dijo. A raíz del pedido de Janiot, Chávez volvió sobre el tema del tratamiento que le dio la comunicadora al venezolano Raúl Díaz Peña, prófugo de la justicia venezolana, que lo condenó a nueve años por colocar bombas en las embajadas de España y Colombia en 2003. La periodista presentó a Díaz como un estudiante acusado por el gobierno venezolano que buscaba refugio en Estados Unidos. Chávez recordó que el entrevistado pudo escaparse del país, porque un juez le concedió una medida sustitutiva a su caso. Los cinco cubanos a los que hizo referencia el mandatario son René González, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino, Fernando González y Gerardo Hernández, apresados en Florida en 1998 por infiltrar grupos terroristas que atentan contra su país.

HAVANA, Cuba, Sept 17 (acn) Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez challenged CNN to interview the five Cuban antiterrorists who remain unjustly imprisoned in the United States since 1998 and whom this television network describes as “terrorists.”
