Havana, March 20 (ACN) The freedom of the five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters unjustly held in US prisons was demanded by participants to the Assembly of Caribbean People held in the Dominican Republic on March 16-18.

Approved as the Santo Domingo Proclamation, the delegates denounced the extremely harsh sentences facing Rene Gonzalez, Gerardo Hernandez, Fernando Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero and Ramon Labanino, internationally known as the Cuban Five. They were punished after a biased trial in Miami for having infiltrated anti-Cuba right-wing movements based in Florida.

After more than eight years in prison most legal experts around the world believe there are no grounds to keep them behind bars.

The delegates also discussed the problems affecting the region and condemned the free trade area policies being implemented by Washington in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Likewise, they denounced the US financial, economic and commercial blockade against the island for over 45 years, and rebuffed the White House's interference in other countries' domestic affairs.

The delegates called for regional integration and manifested their support for the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA), a project that includes Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Bolivia to promote economic and social cooperation.
