Canadians Demand Freedom of Cuban Five
April 8, 2008 Havana, April 8 (acn) The Canada-Cuba Friendship Association (CCFA), based in Calgary, Alberta province, and the Committee for the Release of the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters held in US jails led a demonstration in front of the U.S Consulate in that Canadian city. Despite the cold weather, dozens of people gathered in front of the American consular offices holding flags and posters, while shouting slogans claiming for the release of the five Cuban anti-terrorists fighters, who have been incarcerated for nearly 10 years now after they were framed and arrested in the US city of Miami by FBI agents. At the community center of Parkdale, in the Canadian city of Toronto, Juan Carranza, with the Committee of Lawyers for the Liberation of Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino, Gerardo Hernandez and Rene Gonzalez, internationally known as The Cuban Five, gave a lecture explaining the legal perspective of the case. Meanwhile, professors and students in the University of Calgary held a meeting to comment the case. The Cuban Five were submitted to a biased trial in the US city of Miami and given unfair sentences, which include two life terms, for having infiltrated Florida-based ultra-right organizations that have committed terrorist actions against the Cuban people over the past 45 years.
