HAVANA, Cuba, April 7 (acn) The Brazilian ‘Chico Mendes’ Medal for Resistance 2009 was granted to the five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters who have remained unjustly imprisoned in the United States since 1998.

According to Prensa Latina news agency, the medal was granted by the Brazilian organization ‘Torture: Never Again’ and was received by Bladimir Martinez, the Cuban consul in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo.

After receiving the distinction on behalf of Gerardo Hernández, René González, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino and Fernando González – internationally known as the Cuban Five – the diplomat thanked the Brazilian people for their solidarity and their efforts to spread the truth about the case of these Cuban men that were arrested more than ten years ago for infiltrating extremist groups in South Florida who were planning and carrying out terrorist actions against Cuba.

Martinez added that this medal also recognized the Cuban people for defending the principles of a socialist society and their right to sovereignty and self determination.

The award ceremony, held at the Aula Magna of the Institute of Philosophy and Social Sciences of the General University of Rio de Janeiro, was attended by Paulo Vannuci, Special Secretary for Human Rights Affairs in Brazil, as well as by representatives of Brazilian student and social organizations.

The ‘Chico Mendes’ medal was instituted in 1989 in memory of all the people killed and disappeared under the military dictatorship in Brazil. It was named after a Brazilian environmental activist and unionist killed in 1988.

It is granted to people or organizations that excel in the defense of human rights.

La Habana, 7 abr (AIN) A los Cinco antiterroristas cubanos presos injustamente desde hace una década en EE.UU., les fue otorgada la medalla brasileña Chico Mendes de la Resistencia 2009.

La distinción, otorgada por el grupo brasileño Tortura nunca más a propuesta de la organización Nuestra América, fue entregada a Bladimir Martínez, cónsul de Cuba en la ciudad de Sao Paulo, destaca hoy el periódico Juventud Rebelde, que cita un despacho de Prensa Latina.

El diplomático, tras recibir la condecoración en nombre de Gerardo Hernández, René González, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino y Fernando González -Los Cinco, como se les conoce internacionalmente- agradeció las muestras de solidaridad del pueblo brasileño y sus esfuerzos por romper el silencio en torno a la injusticia.

Martínez también destacó que el otorgamiento de esta medalla a los Cinco constituía un reconocimiento a todo el pueblo cubano por defender los principios de una sociedad socialista y su derecho a la soberanía y autodeterminación.

El acto de entrega, efectuado en el Aula Magna del Instituto de Filosofía y Ciencias Sociales de la Universidad General de Río de Janeiro, contó con la presencia de Paulo Vannuci, secretario Especial para Asuntos de Derechos Humanos en Brasil, así como también de representantes de organizaciones y movimientos sociales, estudiantes y otros miembros de la sociedad civil brasileña.

La medalla Chico Mendes es un galardón instituido en 1989 en memoria de los muertos y desaparecidos por la dictadura militar brasileña. Lleva el nombre del recolector de caucho, sindicalista y activista ambiental brasileño asesinado en 1988, y rinde homenaje a personas y entidades que se destacan en la defensa de los Derechos Humanos.
