BELIZE CITY.— Young members of the People’s United Party (PUP) of Belize sent a letter to US House and Senate leaders Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid asking them to review the Cuban Five case to find "a just solution to what is clearly their unfair incarceration."
The letter notes that the Cuban Five were charged of conspiracy, often used in politically motivated cases. It goes on to ask why they are imprisoned for spying when even the prosecutor accepted that not one page of a classified document was discovered.
The document further argues that the issued has perplexed the United Nations whose working committee on arbitrary detentions deemed the arrest of the five Cubans "arbitrary" and a "violation of international law."
The letter states that the Belizeans learned from Cuban youth organizations that the Five had worked to uncover terrorist plans against Cuba, something they considered praiseworthy. |
