The fierce war that the Empire has carried out against the Cuban Revolution began well before January 1, 1959.  To prove it one only has to read the few documents that were only partially declassified following a delay of several decades following that glorious date.

Washington supported Batista's tyranny starting with the 1952 coup d'etat that abolished republican institutions and it continued its support until it was finally toppled.  The dictatorship's crimes were never criticized nor was there any reproach for its violations of human rights, nor for the death of some 20,000 Cubans.

Quite to the contrary.  The dictatorship's army, navy, air force and police force were trained and advised.  Through the repressive apparatus, a tight relationship was maintained between those who supplied and taught torturers and those who coordinated actions against revolutionaries in Cuba as well as those who had emigrated.  They kept it up until the early morning hours of January 1st.

They facilitated the despot's escape and organized an exit to the United States for the tyranny's worst murderers and accomplices, who looted the Cuban treasury on their way out.  That night, certainly, they delivered the first blow to Cuba in the economic war that still continues.  The hundreds of millions stolen from the Cuban people were the origin for many fortunes that shameless Yankee propaganda presents as though it were the result of supposed entrepreneurial success.

It was with Batista's allies that Washington began its efforts to fabricate a counter-revolutionary opposition.  Those fugitives from justice, far from being punished, received tax breaks and other perks and privileges, while being received in Congress and official salons.  Batista and his henchmen, it should be recalled, were the first tools in the anti-Cuban policy and propaganda promoted by Washington.  And they and their descendants have always been the principal component and rotten substance of that opposition.

The Cuban Adjustment Act of 1966 was, among other things, a law for those associated with Batista, that gave exceptional advantages to those who escaped from Cuba on January 1st.  And the Helms-Burton Law of 1996 is a deeply Batistian horror that goes to the extreme of legislating the "return" of lands, factories and houses to those criminals as an "indispensable condition" before Washington may begin the process of dismantling the economic blockade that it imposes on our people.  Both laws, let us not forget, remain in full force today and there are very few there who even speak of the possibility of repealing them.

With unprecedented cynicism, the imperialists put forward noble ideas such as democracy and human rights, concepts that are completely foreign to them, but that they manipulate in their ceaseless anti-Cuban campaigns.  The truth is that the economic war was unleashed against the Cuban people in order to cause "hunger and desperation," to make them suffer and punish them for having given their overwhelming support to Fidel and the Revolution.  It's all in writing, spelled out, in documents agreed to by the White House as early as the spring of 1959.

A policy conceived in this way is literally defined by the Geneva Convention as criminal genocide, the worst violation of the most basic rights of an entire people.  This is the most prolonged genocide in history, going on more than fifty years now, one which began and is maintained precisely in order to deny Cubans the right to exercise their democratic rights.

Since 1959 the Central Intelligence Agency busied itself with organizing the former henchmen and torturers of the defeated regime, so that they might become the nucleus of a tool manufactured to fight the Revolution on the political level.  The fundamental pillars of the CIA's Covert Action Plan, approved by the White House nearly half a century ago, were the "creation of an opposition within Cuba" that would be directed by the CIA through exiles organized by the Agency outside Cuba and the development of a "powerful propaganda offensive" to inflate and support that "opposition."  This has been the essence of North American policy against Cuba since then and up until the present day.

The only new development is that, since the collapse in Europe of the so-called "real socialism," the CIA's covert actions, which have never ceased, have been augmented by those openly carried out through USAID and other entities, including supposed private contractors, whose plans and projects, to a certain degree, are outlined in the federal budgets.

Now we are facing an intensification of that campaign and we ought to ask ourselves why.  It is because the Cuban people have been able to resist this colossal aggression and Cuba is no longer alone.  New winds of unity, solidarity and independence are blowing across Latin America and the Caribbean.  Our continent is entering a new era that has been made possible by the heroic resistance of Cuban men and women.

The Empire is trying to recover lost space.  For that, it will find little assistance in this part of the world.  It will have to focus across the Atlantic.

The truth is that the Empire and its European satellites are democracy's worst enemies and hands down the greatest violators of human rights.  And they know that morally, they're stripped bare.

Despite their hegemony and control over the so-called "information" media, they have not been able to keep the world from knowing about the massacres in Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine – which add to the long list overflowing the planet – of secret prisons, the infamous legalization of torture and the torments of those locked away at the prison in Guantánamo, space usurped from Cuba, the only corner of this island where human dignity is infringed.

Can they possibly believe that the world doesn't know it?  Do they imagine for even an instant that we've forgotten?

Do they think putting a black man in the White House is good enough?

A man, certainly intelligent, with a personal history that won him respect and sympathy necessary to arrive at his present job.

A black man however, who preaches forgetfulness, who calls for amnesia.  Who doesn't tire of repeating that we ought to leave the past behind and look ahead toward his vague promises of a better future that is increasingly a repetition of the past.

But it just so happens that the past lives in the present.  The economic war, with its genocidal intent, goes on.  It has not been modified in the slightest by the current administration.  The "powerful propaganda offensive" created by Eisenhower's CIA persists and grows, and in a pathetic display, the current occupant of the White House, who didn't have the courage to decline his inexplicable Nobel prize, is a participant.

Posada Carriles, the confessed terrorist who has murdered so many, entered the United States with the complicity of the Bush regime.  But he remains there, protected by the new Administration.  As far as is known up until now, President Obama has not responded nor done anything in regard to the petition from Puerto Rico's governor on December 15, 2008, asking him to direct the FBI to deliver to the courts the evidence that it has jealously guarded for more than three decades about the murders of Santiago Mari Pesquera and Carlos Muñiz Varela.

And Gerardo, Ramón, Antonio, Fernando and René.  Why must they continue suffering cruel and unjust imprisonment?  Did the current President not promise during his election campaign that he would fight against terrorism, with respect for principles and legality?

How can it be explained that those who sacrificed their lives fighting against terrorism should be in prison while terrorists stroll freely through the streets?

Washington has not simply carried out a genocidal economic war against Cuba, it has not only unleashed the crudest campaign of lies and disinformation, it also feeds and promotes terrorism in its worst forms and manifestations.  It's the only explanation for the fact that our Five compañeros still remain kidnapped.

The Five were arrested in September of 1998 because while risking their lives, without weapons, without the use of force or violence, they penetrated the terrorist groups who operate with impunity in Miami.  That was the main accusation against them.

The U.S. government demanded that the trial take place there in Miami and the courts denied them the right to a change of venue.

The U.S. government formulated other false, invented charges, related to supposed espionage activities and in regard to Gerardo, added the infamy of murder in the first degree.

The entire local media controlled by the terrorists unleashed an intense and constant campaign of lies, using the false accusations, while it openly and publicly pressured the members of the jury, who repeatedly told the judge in the case that they felt threatened.  On various occasions the judge echoed this concern and asked the government to try to put an end to the situation which nevertheless persisted until the very end, as evidenced in the trial record.

After the conclusion of the judicial farce it was discovered that the Federal Government was behind that campaign of hatred and fear.  Not only with the incendiary declarations that the prosecutors made in the courtroom and before the press, where they never ceased to repeat that the Five were terrible enemies whose goal was, nothing more and nothing less, than to "destroy the United States."  Now it is known that, in culmination, all those journalists were paid by the U.S. Government, with funds from the federal budget.

The Government knew perfectly well that it was lying.  At the end of the trial, it admitted that it lacked the evidence to prove its main accusation around which the entire process and its dirty propaganda had been centered.

The prosecutorial conduct from beginning to end was a scandalous and systematic prevarication.  The proof was manipulated in order to distort the facts and mislead the jury and still today the defense attorneys are prevented from having access to it.

The violations committed are countless, and any one of them would be sufficient to declare the Miami trial null and void and order the liberation of our Five brothers.

President Obama ought to free them right now, unconditionally.  The Appeals Court in Atlanta made the obvious ruling: that they had not endangered U.S. national security and that they had not sought any secret information in the United States.  And his illustrious predecessor, W. Bush, recognized that there was no proof whatsoever to support the infamous and false accusation against Gerardo Hernández Nordelo.  What more does the young President need?

Can you imagine that he is going to convince us that he represents a credible change if he doesn't dare to liberate the innocent and continues to impede the trial of terrorists for their crimes?  With all the due respect that many still accord him, that question should follow President Obama.  From all quarters and like a gypsy's curse.

Just as the demand that Adriana and Olga be allowed to visit Gerardo and René.  He could very easily put an end to the medieval torture that is being practiced against these young people.

June 15th is the date of the last opportunity to demand in court the release of Gerardo Hernández Nordelo.  We are going to take this step although we know that the possibilities offered him are very remote.

Gerardo has said that we should place our trust in him; that he is prepared to resist, to bear whatever he must bear.  He also said that justice will only come when it is demanded by a jury of millions.

This injustice has lasted twelve years because the people in the United States are unaware of it.  And they don't know about it because those who control the information are preventing the people from having access to the truth.  Let us multiply the solidarity and the denunciation, and let us not stop until Gerardo and his four compañeros are released.

Compañeras and compañeros, friends throughout the world.  Years ago, at moments which were also crucial for us, when the final effort in our long war against Spanish colonialism was underway, José Martí called on international solidarity.  He said then: "Whoever stands today with Cuba stands for all time."

His words remain in full force today.  Cuban men and women remain standing.  You can trust us.  You can count on our solidarity.  We shall continue fighting together always, until victory.

La encarnizada guerra que el Imperio lleva a cabo contra la Revolución comenzó antes del Primero de Enero de 1959. Para comprobarlo basta leer los pocos documentos oficiales parcial y tardíamente desclasificados varias décadas después de esa gloriosa fecha.

Washington apoyó a la tiranía batistiana desde el golpe de estado que en 1952 abolió las instituciones republicanas y la sostuvo hasta su derrumbe final. Nunca criticaron sus crímenes ni la amonestaron por las violaciones a los derechos humanos ni por la muerte de 20 mil cubanos.

Hicieron todo lo contrario. Armaron, entrenaron y asesoraron al Ejército y a las fuerzas navales, aéreas y policiales de la dictadura. Mantuvieron una estrecha cooperación con los aparatos represivos a quienes equiparon y enseñaron a torturar y con ellos coordinaron acciones contra los revolucionarios en Cuba y en la emigración. Lo hicieron hasta la madrugada del Primero de Enero.

Facilitaron la fuga del déspota y organizaron la salida hacia Estados Unidos de sus peores asesinos y compinches, quienes antes de marcharse saquearon el tesoro de la República. Esa noche, por cierto, dieron a Cuba el primer golpe en la guerra económica que aún perdura. Los centenares de millones robados al pueblo cubano fueron el origen de muchas fortunas que la desvergonzada propaganda yanqui presenta como si fueran resultado de supuestos éxitos empresariales.

Con los batistianos Washington inició sus empeños para fabricar una oposición contrarrevolucionaria. Los prófugos de la justicia, lejos de castigo recibieron exenciones impositivas y otras prebendas y privilegios y fueron recibidos en sesiones del Congreso y en salones oficiales. Batista y sus secuaces, precisa recordarlo, fueron los primeros instrumentos en la política y la propaganda anticubana promovida por Washington. Y ellos y sus descendientes han sido siempre el componente principal y la sustancia podrida de esa oposición.

La Ley de Ajuste Cubano de 1966 era, entre otras cosas, una ley batistiana que dio ventajas excepcionales a los que de Cuba escaparon el Primero de Enero. Y la Ley Helms-Burton de 1996 es un engendro profundamente batistiano que llega al extremo de consagrar que la "devolución" de tierras, fábricas y casas a esos delincuentes es la "condición indispensable" para que Washington pudiera iniciar el proceso para desmantelar el bloqueo económico que impone a nuestro pueblo. Ambas leyes, no lo olvidemos, tienen hoy plena vigencia y pocos hablan allá siquiera de la posibilidad de derogarlas.

Con cinismo inaudito los imperialistas manosean ideas nobles como la democracia y los derechos humanos, conceptos que les son completamente ajenos, pero que manipulan en sus incesantes campañas anticubanas. La verdad es que la guerra económica la desataron contra el pueblo cubano para causarle "hambre y desesperación", para hacerlo sufrir y castigarlo porque ese pueblo dio su apoyo abrumador a Fidel y a la Revolución. Así está escrito, con todas las letras, en textos que acordaron en la Casa Blanca ya en la primavera de 1959.

Una política así concebida es literalmente lo que la Convención de Ginebra define como el crimen de genocidio, la peor violación de los derechos más elementales de todo un pueblo. Es el genocidio más prolongado de la historia que dura ya más de cincuenta años y que empezó y se mantiene precisamente para negar a los cubanos el ejercicio de sus derechos democráticos.

Desde 1959 la Agencia Central de Inteligencia se ocupó de agrupar a los antiguos esbirros y torturadores del régimen derrotado para que fuesen el núcleo central del instrumento que se propuso fabricar para combatir a la revolución en el plano político. El Programa de Acciones Encubiertas de la CIA, aprobado por la Casa Blanca hace más de medio siglo, tenía como pilares fundamentales la "creación de una oposición dentro de Cuba" que sería dirigida por la CIA a través de los exiliados organizados por la Agencia en el exterior y el desarrollo de "una poderosa ofensiva de propaganda" para inflar y apoyar esa "oposición". Esa ha sido la esencia de la política norteamericana contra Cuba desde entonces hasta hoy.

Lo único novedoso es que, a partir del derrumbe en Europa del llamado "socialismo real", a las acciones encubiertas de la CIA, que nunca han cesado, se agregan las que abiertamente realizan por medio de la AID y otras entidades, incluyendo contratistas supuestamente privados, cuyos planes y proyectos, en alguna medida, aparecen reflejados en los presupuestos federales.

Ahora enfrentamos una intensificación de esa campaña y debemos preguntarnos por qué. Porque el pueblo cubano ha sido capaz de resistir esa colosal agresión y Cuba ya no está sola. Nuevos vientos de unidad, solidaridad e independencia recorren la América Latina y el Caribe. Nuestro Continente entra en una época nueva que ha sido posible por la heroica resistencia de los cubanos y las cubanas.

El Imperio pretende recuperar el espacio perdido. Para ello cuenta con pocos servidores en esta parte del mundo. Debe buscarlos sobre todo allende el Atlántico.

La verdad es que el Imperio y sus satélites europeos son los peores enemigos de la democracia y los más contumaces violadores de los derechos humanos. Y saben que están moralmente en cueros.

Pese a su hegemonía y control sobre los llamados medios de "información" no han logrado impedir que el mundo sepa de las masacres en Iraq, Afganistán y Palestina – que se agregan a una larga lista que desborda el planeta -, de las cárceles secretas, de la infame legalización de la tortura y de los tormentos a los encerrados en la prisión de Guantánamo, espacio usurpado a Cuba, único rincón de esta Isla donde se vulnera la dignidad del ser humano.

¿Creen acaso que el mundo no sabe? ¿Imaginan por un instante que hemos olvidado?

¿Creen que es suficiente con colocar a un hombre negro en la Casa Blanca?

A un hombre, por cierto, inteligente, con una trayectoria personal que le ganó respeto y simpatía para llegar a su actual empleo.

Un hombre negro que, sin embargo, predica el olvido, convoca a la amnesia. No se cansa de repetir que dejemos atrás el pasado y que miremos hacia adelante hacia sus vagas promesas de un futuro mejor que cada vez más es una repetición del pasado.

Pero sucede que el pasado vive en el presente. La guerra económica, con su intento genocida, continúa, no ha sido modificada en lo absoluto con la actual Administración. Persiste y se acrecienta la "poderosa ofensiva de propaganda" que concibió la CIA de Eisenhower y en la que participa personalmente, en patético espectáculo, el actual inquilino de la Casa Blanca, el que no tuvo valor para declinar el inexplicable premio Nobel.

Posada Carriles, el confeso terrorista que a tantos ha asesinado, entró a Estados Unidos con la complicidad del régimen de Bush. Pero sigue allá protegido por la nueva Administración. Que se sepa hasta ahora el Presidente Obama no ha respondido ni ha hecho nada respecto a la petición que le hizo el Gobernador de Puerto Rico, el 15 de diciembre de 2008 solicitándole que dispusiera que el FBI entregue a los tribunales las evidencias que celosamente ha ocultado por más de tres décadas de los asesinatos de Santiago Mari Pesquera y Carlos Muñiz Varela.

Y Gerardo, Ramón, Antonio, Fernando y René ¿por qué siguen sufriendo injusta y cruel prisión? ¿No prometió durante su campaña electoral el actual Presidente que lucharía contra el terrorismo respetando los principios y la legalidad?

¿Cómo explica que quienes han sacrificado sus vidas luchando contra el terrorismo estén en prisión y los terroristas se paseen libremente por las calles?

Contra Cuba Washington lleva a cabo no sólo su genocida guerra económica, no sólo ha desatado la más burda campaña de calumnias y desinformación, también alienta y promueve el terrorismo en sus peores formas y manifestaciones. Es la única explicación de que nuestros Cinco compañeros estén todavía secuestrados.

Los Cinco fueron detenidos en septiembre de 1998 porque a riesgo de sus vidas, sin armas, sin usar la fuerza o la violencia penetraron a grupos terroristas que operan impunemente en Miami. Esa fue la acusación principal contra ellos.

El Gobierno exigió que el juicio se efectuase en ese lugar y el tribunal les negó el derecho al cambio de sede.

El Gobierno formuló otros cargos falsos, inventados, relacionados con supuestas actividades de espionaje y en cuanto a Gerardo además la infamia de asesinato en primer grado.

Todos los medios locales controlados por los terroristas desataron una intensa y constante campaña de calumnias usando las falsas acusaciones y presionaron abierta y públicamente a los miembros del Jurado, quienes repetidas veces expresaron a la Jueza que se sentían amedrentados. La Jueza en varias ocasiones se hizo eco de esa preocupación y pidió al Gobierno que tratase de poner fin a una situación que sin embargo persistió hasta el final como consta en las actas del juicio.

Después de concluida la farsa judicial se ha descubierto que detrás de esa campaña de odio y temor estaba el Gobierno Federal. No sólo con las declaraciones incendiarias que los fiscales hacían ante el Tribunal y ante la prensa, donde no cesaban de repetir que los Cinco eran terribles enemigos cuyo propósito era, nada más y nada menos, que "destruir a los Estados Unidos." Ahora se sabe que, para colmo, todos esos periodistas eran pagados por el Gobierno de Estados Unidos con fondos del presupuesto federal.

El Gobierno sabía perfectamente que estaba mintiendo. Al final del juicio admitió que carecía de evidencias para probar su acusación principal alrededor de la cual había girado todo el proceso y su sucia propaganda.

La conducta de la Fiscalía de principio a fin fue una escandalosa y sistemática prevaricación. Las pruebas fueron manipuladas para tergiversar los hechos y engañar al Jurado y todavía hoy impiden el acceso a ellas a los abogados defensores.

Son incontables las numerosas violaciones cometidas y cualquiera de ellas sería suficiente para declarar nulo el juicio de Miami y ordenar la excarcelación de nuestros Cinco hermanos.

El Presidente Obama debe ponerlos en libertad ahora mismo, sin condiciones. Ya la Corte de Apelaciones determinó lo obvio: que ellos no habían puesto en peligro la seguridad nacional de Estados Unidos y que no habían buscado ninguna información secreta en ese país. Y su ilustre predecesor, W. Bush, reconoció que no tenía prueba alguna para sostener la infame y falsa acusación contra Gerardo Hernández Nordelo. ¿Qué más le hace falta al joven Presidente?

¿Imagina que nos va a convencer que él representa un cambio creíble si no se atreve a liberar a los inocentes y sigue impidiendo que sean juzgados por sus crímenes los terroristas? Con el debido respeto que todavía él merece a muchos, esa pregunta debe perseguir al Presidente Obama. Por todas partes y siempre como una maldición gitana.

Como debe perseguirlo la exigencia de que permita a Adriana y a Olga visitar a Gerardo y a René. Él puede poner fin fácilmente a la tortura medieval que practica contra estos jóvenes.

El 15 de junio vence el último plazo para exigir ante los tribunales la libertad de Gerardo Hernández Nordelo. Vamos a dar ese paso aunque sabemos que ofrece muy remotas posibilidades para él.

Gerardo ha dicho que confiemos en él, que él está dispuesto a resistir, a aguantar lo que tenga que aguantar. También dijo que la justicia sólo vendrá cuando la exija un jurado de millones.

Esta injusticia ha durado doce años porque el pueblo norteamericano no la conoce. Y no la conoce porque quienes controlan la información le impiden a ese pueblo acceder a la verdad. Multipliquemos la solidaridad y la denuncia. Que no se detengan hasta liberar a Gerardo y sus cuatro compañeros.

Compañeras y compañeros, amigos de todo el mundo. Hace años en momentos también cruciales para nosotros, cuando preparaba el último esfuerzo en nuestra larga guerra contra el colonialismo español, José Martí reclamó la solidaridad internacional. Dijo él entonces: "Quien se levanta hoy con Cuba se levanta para todos los tiempos."

Sus palabras tienen hoy plena vigencia. Los cubanos y las cubanas seguiremos en pie. En nosotros, ustedes pueden confiar. Cuenten con nuestra solidaridad. Sigamos luchando juntos hasta la victoria siempre.
