Alarcon Criticizes Silence of the US Media on the Cuban Five

If they knew the truth, they would demand Obama to do what he has to do: withdraw the charges and set them free, added the Cuban leader during his address to participants in the final session of the 5th International meeting on Justice and Law, held at Havana’s Convention Center. However, “the so-called media outlets impose silence, since they don’t have much to do with information and are actually instruments of ideological control at the service of the empire”, pointed out Alarcon in the presence of relatives of the Cuban Five and of professionals from 14 nations attending the event. He recalled that the only thing our fellow countrymen did was trying to discover and prevent criminal actions, which, against Cuba and its people, have been carried out from the United States with scandalous impunity for years, he pointed out. Meanwhile, well-known criminals are freely wandering around the streets of the United States, among them Luis Posada Carriles, a fugitive from Venezuelan justice and the author of the sabotage against a Cubana airliner in 1976, killing all 76 people on board. Alarcon described as clumsy and cynical the media campaign launched by the United States and Europe against the island, and reiterated the solidarity of the Cuban Parliament with the student strike in Puerto Rico, where repression caused the death of 21-year-old Natalia Sanchez, buried on Friday. Judges, district attorneys, defense counsels, lawyers, university professors and other professionals from this sector participated in the meeting, an initiative by the Popular Supreme Court, the first edition of which took place in October, 2002. Jose Ramon Machado Ventura, First Vice-president of the councils of State and Ministers, attended the inaugural ceremony of the event, in which experts from Latin America, Africa, and Europe, participated.
| En Encuentro Internacional sobre Justicia y Derecho Denuncia Alarcón silencio mediático sobre los Cinco en EE.UU. por Lino Luben Pérez La Habana, 28 may (AIN) Ricardo Alarcón, presidente de la Asamblea Nacional del Poder Popular, afirmó hoy que si el pueblo norteamericano supiera la verdad sobre los cinco antiterroristas cubanos, obligaría al presidente Barack Obama a liberarlos. La injusticia continuará contra Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González, Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino y René González, mientras se impida a la población de Estados Unidos conocer los hechos reales, advirtió el también miembro del Buró Político del Partido Comunista de Cuba. Si los dominara, exigiría a Obama hacer lo que tiene que hacer: retirar las acusaciones y ponerlos en libertad, añadió en una intervención especial en la sesión final del V Encuentro Internacional sobre Justicia y Derecho, que sesionó en el Palacio de las Convenciones de La Habana. Sin embargo, "los llamados medios de comunicación imponen el silencio, pues poco tienen que ver con la información y son en realidad instrumentos de control ideológico al servicio del imperio", señaló en presencia de familiares de los Cinco y de profesionales de 14 países asistentes al evento. Recordó que lo único que hicieron nuestros compatriotas fue tratar de descubrir y de evitar acciones criminales que, contra Cuba y su pueblo, se realizan desde EE.UU. con escandalosa impunidad, durante años. Por eso, nadie puede desconocer el derecho y la necesidad de defensa que tenemos, acotó. Por el contrario, connotados criminales se pasean libremente en territorio norteamericano, entre ellos Luis Posada Carriles, prófugo de la justicia venezolano y autor del sabotaje en 1976 avión de Cubana de Aviación que costó la vista a 76 personas. Alarcón calificó de torpe y cínica la campaña mediática contra la Isla de Estados Unidos y la Unión Europea, y reiteró la solidaridad del parlamento cubano con la huelga estudiantil en Puerto Rico, donde la represión provocó la muerte de la joven de 21 años Natalia Sánchez López, sepultada este viernes. Magistrados, fiscales, defensores públicos, abogados, profesores universitarios y otros profesionales del sector intervinieron en el evento, que constituye una iniciativa del Tribunal Supremo Popular desde el primero efectuado en octubre de 2002. José Ramón Machado Ventura, primer vicepresidente de los Consejos de Estados y de Ministros, estuvo en la sesión inaugural de la cita, en la que participaron expertos de América Latina en su mayoría, aunque también acudieron de África y Europa.

HAVANA, Cuba, May 28 (acn) Cuban Parliament President Ricardo Alarcon affirmed on Friday that if the US people knew the truth about the case of the five Cuban antiterrorists, they would force President Barack Obama to release them from prison.
