The Five conduct themselves as if each and every one of them were the entire people, as if each one of them were the Revolution and its Commander in Chiefby Ricardo Alarcón I conclude evoking five young men, five of our comrades who are present in our thoughts, in all of our memories: Gerardo, Ramón, Antonio, Fernando and René. I will not dwell deep into their case, one that you all know too well, I will just insist on one aspect. Fidel once said that a true revolutionary must have the consciousness that when necessary each and every one would have to be the Revolution, each and every one the Commander in Chief. In a supreme moment, a definitive one, when we are alone, confronting the perils of life or death, that must be the attitude of a communist, of a revolutionary. Fortunately for us, we are far from such a dramatic situation, we have the option of collective action, of collective debate, of organization, of work within different forces, different factors; but Gerardo, Ramón, Tony, Fernando and René have spent the last eight years going through the occurrence that Fidel once described as the supreme challenge for anyone of us, and in the prisons where they are confined, they have shown that they act as if they were all of us, as if each one of them were the entire people, as if each one of them were the Revolution and its Commander in Chief. When for a brief moment we come to think that we have done enough, we must think of them. If for a second to one, to any of us, a moment f weakness arises, we must think of them. If for an instant we think that we might deserve more, something material, something to make our life easier, we must think of them, they are the true example of the contrary, sacrificing themselves for us all, alone, completely alone, each and everyone of them; but without having given in an inch of their patriotism, of their dignity. They are revealing to us, that they are proof that this people has the sufficient moral strength to overcome, if we all develop those same virtues and that same spirit that these Five comrades have shown us. Los Cinco actúan como si cada uno de ellos fuera el pueblo entero, como si cada uno de ellos fuera la Revolución y su Comandante en Jefepor Ricardo Alarcón Termino evocando a cinco jóvenes, cinco compañeros nuestros que también sé que están presentes en la memoria, en el recuerdo de todos nosotros: Gerardo, Ramón, Antonio, Fernando y René. No voy ahora a abundar en su caso, que ustedes conocen muy bien, solo quiero insistir en un punto. Alguna vez Fidel dijo que el revolucionario verdadero tenía que asumir la conciencia de que en caso necesario él era, cada uno es la Revolución, cada uno es el Comandante en Jefe. En el momento supremo, definitorio, cuando estemos solos, frente al riesgo de la vida o la muerte, esa debe ser la actitud del comunista, del revolucionario. Nosotros, por suerte, estamos muy lejos de esa situación dramática, tenemos las posibilidades de la acción colectiva, del debate conjunto, de la organización, del trabajo con distintas fuerzas, distintos factores; pero Gerardo, Ramón, Tony, Fernando y René llevan ocho años pasando por esa experiencia que Fidel alguna vez nos presentó como el supremo desafío para cualquiera de nosotros, y en la cárcel donde ellos están encerrados, han demostrado que actúan como si cada uno de ellos fuéramos todos nosotros, como si cada uno de ellos fuera el pueblo entero, como si cada uno de ellos fuera la Revolución y su Comandante en Jefe. Cuando nos pase por la mente, por la imaginación la idea de que ya hemos hecho bastante, pensemos en ellos. Si alguna vez se le ocurre a alguien, a alguno, una actitud de flojera o de blandenguería, pensemos en ellos. Si alguna vez se nos ocurre pensar que merecemos algo más, algo material, algo que nos facilite la vida, pensemos en ellos, que son ejemplos exactamente de todo lo contrario, sacrificándose por todos nosotros, solos, completamente solo cada uno de ellos; pero sin haber renunciado a un ápice de su patriotismo, de su dignidad. Ellos nos están mostrando, nos están probando que este pueblo tiene fuerza moral suficiente para vencer, si todos desarrollamos esas virtudes y ese espíritu que esos cinco compañeros nos están indicando.
