HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 20 (acn) The President of the Cuban National Assembly (Parliament), Ricardo Alarcon, called for an increase of efforts and international solidarity in favor of the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters who remain unjustly imprisoned in the United States since 1998.

Speaking to participants in the International Conference of Studies on the Americas that began yesterday in Havana, Alarcon referred to the importance of intensifying efforts in the battle for the release of Gerardo Hernandez, Fernando Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, Rene Gonzalez and Ramon Labañino – internationally known as the Cuban Five – who were arrested and given harsh sentences in Miami for monitoring extreme right-wing anti-Cuba groups that were planning and carrying out terrorist actions against the Caribbean nation from South Florida.

The top legislator recalled that during Guerrero’s re-sentencing hearing last October, the judge of the Southern District of Florida recognized the importance of the international movement of solidarity with the Five.

During the hearing, Guerrero was re-sentenced to 21 years plus 10 months – more than what the Defense and the Prosecution teams had agreed to – and the Government’s only argument in favor of the defendant was the pressure exerted by international solidarity groups and personalities.

Other topics such as the injustices and violations in the legal process against the Five as well as President Barack Obama’s ability to order the release of the five Cuban antiterrorists were also analyzed by Alarcon during his address at the Center of Studies on the Americas in Havana.

He also recalled that the US Supreme Court received 12 Amicus Curiae (Friends of the Court) reports in favor of the Five signed by 10 Nobel Prize laureates, hundreds of legislators from all over the world and many associations such as the International Federation of Human Rights and the National Lawyers Guild of the United States.

Alarcon recalled that the re-sentencing hearings of Fernando and Ramon are scheduled for December 8 and he announced that, in the case of Gerardo and Rene, the Defense team will file a petition for a writ of habeas corpus – their last legal resource - before June 2010.

La Habana, 19 nov (AIN) Ricardo Alarcón de Quesada, presidente de la Asamblea Nacional del Poder Popular, llamó hoy, en esta capital, a intensificar la labor de solidaridad internacional con los cinco cubanos antiterroristas prisioneros en EE.UU. desde 1998.

Alarcón explicó a los participantes en la Conferencia Internacional de Estudios Americanos la necesidad de multiplicar la batalla por la liberación de Gerardo Hernández, Fernando González, Antonio Guerrero, René González y Ramón Labañino.

Argumentó que el pasado13 de octubre, en la vista de resentencia de Guerrero, la jueza del Distrito Sur de la Florida reconoció la importancia del movimiento mundial de solidaridad con los antiterroristas cubanos.

En la vista la condena de Guerrero terminó en 21 años y 10 meses de cárcel, pena superior a la pactada por la Defensa y la Fiscalía, y el Gobierno esgrimió, como único argumento a favor del acusado, la presión internacional de los movimientos de solidaridad, dijo Alarcón de Quesada.

Aspectos del injusto proceso judicial, así como también la autoridad que posee el Presidente de los Estados Unidos para ordenar la liberación de Los Cinco, fueron temas tratados también en la conferencia magistral, celebrada en el Centro de Estudios de América.

El líder parlamentario se refirió al papel de los 12 Amicus Curiae presentados ante la Corte Suprema de Justicia de EE.UU., convertidos en un hecho sin precedentes por su cantidad en el sistema judicial de esa nación.

Entre los que suscribieron los amicus se incluían 10 premios Nobel, cientos de legisladores de todo el mundo y numerosas asociaciones como la Federación Internacional de Derechos Humanos y la Asociación Americana de Juristas.

El próximo ocho de diciembre tendrán lugar las vistas de resentencia de Fernando González y Ramón Labañino, mientras que en el caso de Gerardo Hernández y René González la defensa presentará antes de junio de 2010 un Habeas Corpus, última herramienta legal de que dispone.

Los Cinco sufren injusta prisión en cárceles de máxima seguridad en territorio norteamericano, por prevenir a su pueblo de ataques terroristas perpetrados por organizaciones contrarrevolucionarias radicadas en la Florida.
