Rome November 16th, 2013 - An appeal for the immediate release of the Cubans unfairly condemned, still held in the United States.

That's what 55 celebrities from the world of politics, culture, entertainment and sport, have today requested President Barack Obama through the website www.vitadura.it. They are asking him to intervene to put an end to a detention that has lasted for 15 years and that is considered illegal by several international organizations, including the Commission for Arbitrary Detention of the United Nations and Amnesty International, since it is against to the fundamental norms of international law and the protection of human rights.

Martin Sheen, Angela Davis, Fiorella Mannoia, Alberto Juantorena, Carla Fracci, Alice Walker, Ascanio Celestini, Danny Glover, Gianni Vattimo, Javier Sotomayor, Moni Ovadia and many other celebrities from all around the world, have united their voices to request President Obama for an act of justice, choosing to commit themselves to a cause which in the past has already received the support of governments, organizations, associations, institutions and committees involved in the defense of human rights.

Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero Rodríguez, Fernando González Llort, René Gonzalez Sehweret were arrested in Florida in 1998 while collecting information to prevent acts of aggression and intimidation against the civilian population in Cuba. U.S. authorities accused them of espionage and infiltration into the territory of the United States as secret agents of a foreign state, without which none of this could never be proved.

Processed in a climate of intense hostility in Miami, were sentenced to exorbitant penalties, in violation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights of the United Nations. For this reason, the UN considered the trial not legal, because during the process the foundamental defence gurantees were not applied, therefor asked the U.S. government to put them back in freedom. Amnesty International has also criticized the United States for the treatment of five prisoners, having violeted their fundamental rights.

Over the past years, many members of the European countries, intellectuals, artists and ten Nobel prizes (Jose Ramos-Horta, Wole Soyinka, Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, Nadine Gordimer, Rigoberta Menchú, José Saramago, Zhores Alferov, Dario Fo, Günter Grass e Máiread Corrigan Maguire), have launched appeals and promoted initiatives for the release of the five.

No solid evidence has been produced against them but the Cubans remain in U.S. prisons and at the moment the resolution of this injustice depends only on President Obama.

In October 2011, one of the five, René González Sehweret was released from prison and returned to Cuba only after he renounced his U.S. citizenship, as required by the authorities in Washington. The other four Cubans remain in prison, paying a high price for trying to defend their country from terrorism, which the United Stated have always officially tried to defeat.

Roma 16 de novembre del año 2013. Un llamamiento para solecitar la liberacion inmediata de los cubanos condenados injustamente y detenidos todavia en los Estados Unidos. Hoy  55 personajes del mundo de la politica, de la cultura, del espectáculo y del deporte a travésde un vídeo mensaje publicado por el sitio web www.vitadura.it, han pedido al presidente Barack Obama poner fin a una detencion que ya dura desde 15 años y declarada ilegal por el grupo de trabajo de la Onu sobre las Detenciones Arbitrarias y por Amnistía Internacional a causa de la violacion de los derechos humanos y de las normas del derecho internacional.

Martin Sheen, Angela Davis, Fiorella Mannoia, Alberto Juantorena, Carla Fracci, Alice Walker, Ascanio Celestini, Danny Glover, Gianni Vattimo, Javier Sotomayor, Moni Ovadia y otras celebridades del mundo se unieron para instar al presidente Obama un acto de justicia. Ellos decidieron apoyar la causa de los cinco sostenida durante estos años por gobiernos, organizaciones, asociaciones, instituciones y comités comprometidos en la defensa de los derechos humanos.

Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, Ramón Labañino Salazar, Antonio Guerrero Rodríguez, Fernando Gonzáles Lort, René Gonzáles Sehweret fueron arrestados en Florida en el año 1998 mientras recaudaban informaciones necesarias para evitar actos violentos e intimidaciones contra el pueblo cubano.
Los cinco fueron acusados por conspiración , por espionaje y por ser agentes extranjeros no declarados al Fiscal de los Estados Unidos. Las autoridades estadounidense fueron incapaz de refutar los argumentos de la defensa y sustentar sus acusaciones.

Juzgados en la ciudad de Miami, en un clima de parcialidad y prejuicio, fueron condenados a penas severas en violación de la Convención Internacional sobre Libertades Civiles y Políticas Por esta razón la Onu declaró el juicio nulo y exhortó el gobierno de Washington a liberar a los cinco.Amestía Internacional ha condenado el gobierno de los Estados Unidos por el trato de los prisioneros  en violación de los derechos humanos.

Durante estos años muchos parlamentarios de diferentes Paises Europeos, intelectuales, artistas y diez Premios Nobel ((José Ramos-Horta, Wole Soyinka, Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, Nadine Gordimer, Rigoberta Menchú, José Saramago, Zhores Alferov, Dario Fo, Günter Grass e Máiread Corrigan Maguire) han promovido y apoyado acciones para llamar la atención sobre el caso de los cinco.

A pesar de la falta de pruebas para sustentar las acusaciones durante todos los grados del juicio, los cubanos siguen presos en las carceles estadounidenses. Depende solamente del presidente Obama  poner remedio a esta injusticia.

En el mes de octubre del año 2011, uno de los cinco, René Gonzáles Sehweret fue liberado y pudo volver a Cuba solamente después haber renunciado a la ciudadania estadounidense como impuesto por el gobierno de Washington. Los otros cuatro siguen presos y están pagando todavía un precio muy alto por haber defendido su pais del terrorismo. La sentencia está en contradiccion con la  decision adoptada hace años por el gobierno de los Estados Unidos cerca la batalla contra el terrorismo en el mundo.
