Dear Friends:

A couple of days ago a person who is known here came and brought me an article published in a newspaper of his town that talked about Cuba and specifically about the explorations by petroleum platforms on the coast of our island.

I glanced at the article and I noticed without reading much of it, what the double intention of it is, which is basically, continue the propaganda against the Revolution.

This person, who had read the article, begins to tell me that in Cuba there are many things that have to change. To back his claim he made reference to some “opinions” that the author of the article picked up “on the Cuban streets.”

That’s how I got wrapped up in a conversation with him about the works created by our people. But at a certain point I realized that my arguments about our education and free medical care, about our electoral system, about our process of current changes in the context of the complex world that we live in, nothing could change his mind to realize that it is one thing what a Miami Herald reporter says and another what the Cuban reality is.

In that precise instant I asked him: Have you ever gone to Cuba? Of course the answer was no.

I said to him frankly: Look, I have not lived the Cuban reality for more than 20 years, although I keep up-to-date about it. But I invite you to go to Cuba one day and compare it with what the newspaper tells you and what is truly the essence of our people.

I told him, I wish you could be there this May first. You would realize how many millions of men, women and children there are who love and will do what is necessary to defend the Revolution, in spite of its virtues and defects.

I looked at his eyes and said: Do you know why this government doesn’t permit free travel of all U.S. citizens to Cuba? And I answered him: Because they are afraid they will learn about the Cuban reality, they don’t want them to see with their own eyes what has been built in more than 50 years of socialism. They don’t want them to sense the security that the tourist experiences in our island, and the generosity and hospitality of our people.

That’s how the issue ended.

Queridos amigos:

Hace un par de dias vino una persona conocida aqui y me trae, para que lo lea, un articulo publicado en un periodico de su localidad que hablaba sobre Cuba y en especifico sobre las exploraciones de las plataformas petroleras en las costas de nuestra isla.

Le echo un vistazo al articulo y me doy cuenta, sin leer mucho, de la doble intension de lo escrito, lo cual tenia como fondo continuar la campana de propaganda adversa a la Revolucion.

Esa persona, quien habia leido lo escrito, comienza a decirme que en Cuba habia muchas cosas que se requerian cambiar y para sustentar su planteamiento tomo como referencia algunas "opiniones" que recogia el autor del articulo "en las calles cubanas".

Asi, me vi enfrascado en una conversacion con el acerca de la obra construida por nuestro pueblo, pero en un punto me di cuenta que de nada servian mis argumentos sobre nuestra educacion y atencion medica gratuita, sobre nuestro sistema electoral, sobre nuestro proceso de cambios actuales en el contexto del complejo mundo en que vivimos, para hacerle ver que una cosa dice un reportero del Miami Herald y otra es la realidad cubana.

Fue en ese preciso instante que le pregunte: Tu has estado en Cuba alguna vez? Por supuesto, la respuesta fue negativa.

Le dije, con franqueza: Mira, yo hace mas de veinte anos que no vivo la realidad cubana, aunque me mantengo actualizado sobre ella. Pero, yo te invito un dia vayas a Cuba y compares lo que dice el periodico y lo que es en verdad la esencia de nuestro pueblo.

Ojala, le afirme, pudieras estar alli este primero de mayo y te darias cuenta de cuantos son los millones de hombres, mujeres y ninos que aman y estan dispuestos a lo que sea por defender la Revolucion, a pesar de las virtudes y los defectos de ella.

Le mire a los ojos y le exprese: Tu sabes por que el gobierno de aqui no permite los viajes libres de todos los ciudadanos estadounidenses a Cuba?. Y yo mismo le respondi: Porque temen que conozcan la realidad cubana, no quieren que ellos vean con sus propios ojos lo que se ha construido en mas de 50 anos de obra socialista, no quieren que palpen la seguridad que vive un turista en nuestra isla y la generosidad y hospitalidad de nuestro pueblo.

Ahi quedo el asunto.
