Dear friends:

Today my loved ones return to Cuba after their visit here in Marianna, which is much closer than faraway Florence.
With them came the rain, the green became greener and spring arrived early with an unusual splendor.

When I walk in the prison yard I see the tiny violet and white flowers that grow in the fresh grass. Scattered here and there is a canary yellow flower. What great beauty! They are the perfect opposing colors with a contrast that draws your eyes to them and makes one’s soul happy. What a brilliant work of nature! I ask myself: How many times did René fix his eyes on these details? Our brother René, denied the right to be with Roberto for just a few days. I have read the things that are being published, the answers and reactions. Why so much cruelty against the honesty and pureness of a man, who has never harmed anyone nor anything?

I am sure many of you have been waiting for the results of my review of the compositions by my students. Monday was our last visit and it was only yesterday, Tuesday, that I could go over this issue with the students. The theme, as I told you was: What I can teach. Each one took it up in a different way, as was to be expected.

While some could teach about practical things like the job of a truck driver and tire repair, others touched on more spiritual things like love or the word of God. In two cases they wrote about art, that is, showing how to draw and how to paint. And finally we decided to develop on the blackboard a composition that began: What I can teach is history.

Correcting the errors in the presentations, but without making any substantial changes in the writing, I re-did the composition on the blackboard for everyone. It seemed that everything was fine. But there was a crucial problem. The composition had only 105 words and in the exam, the requirement is a minimum of 250 words.

That is how it became necessary for me to expand on that composition and I began to talk about concrete issues of the history of our America.

The class was supposed to end at 9 am, but there was a lock-up for a count and we couldn’t get out until 10:30 when the shift ends. They asked me to talk to them more about the story of the discovery of America. I improvised a map of the world and I began to speak about the trips of Columbus and the conquest, the extermination of the Indians of the Caribbean, the arrival of Diego Velázquez, who together with Hernán Cortés began the conquest of Mexico.

Then we came to Cuba, where we came to the peculiarity that while by 1840 all the peoples of America had attained their independence, Puerto Rico and Cuba continued being a colony of Spain. And that’s when the questions brought us to the complex theme of the Cuban reality.

I didn’t want to continue speaking about Cuba. I never like to refer to the Cuban reality in a class. At a certain point I had no choice but to talk about the changes that the Revolution has brought to the life of the people, among them free education and healthcare. And a student who continued pressing me said: “But, I prefer to live in freedom.” His comment didn’t alter my presentation.

What I did was offer concrete elements: The Latin American School of Medicine, the doctors and technicians who offer services in the world, the regulations on trips to Cuba, including the Cuban Adjustment Law and others. They are irrefutable. Ironically, that is the person who ended up asking me if it were possible for his adolescent son to study in Cuba.

Well, that is how we ended. It wasn’t a class anymore but a conversation, which ended as it began, with much respect and understanding of each opinion. Finally, I hope you have clearly seen the example of how a composition of 250 words and more is possible, when you pick a theme that you can speak about with ease.

I think I’ve extended myself enough.

Queridos amigos:

Regresan hoy a Cuba mis seres queridos luego de su visita aquí en Marianna, mucho más cerca que aquel lejano Florence.

Con ellos vino la lluvia, el verde se hizo más verde, la primavera se adelantó con un esplendor inusual.
Cuando recorro el patio de la prisión miro las diminutas florecillas violetas y blancas que crecen entre la hierba fresca. Regadas por aquí y por allá una que otra flor amarillo canario. ¡Que gran belleza! Son los colores opuestos perfectos, que ofrecen un contraste que atrae la vista y alegra el alma. Genialidad de la naturaleza. Me pregunto: Cuantas veces habrá reparado René en estos detalles?. Nuestro hermano Rene, privado de poder estar con Roberto por unos días. He leído las cosas se van publicando, las respuestas y reacciones. ¿Por qué tanto ensañamiento ante la honestidad y la pureza de un hombre, que jamás ha hecho daño a nadie ni a nada?

Seguro muchos se han quedado esperando el resultado de mi revisión de las composiciones de los estudiantes. El lunes tuve la última visita y sólo ayer martes pude abordar con los alumnos este asunto. El tema, como les dije era: Lo que yo puedo enseñar. Cada uno lo abordó de diferente forma, como era de esperar.

Mientras unos podían enseñar sobre cosas prácticas como el oficio de trailero y de gomero, otros tocaron cosas mas espirituales como el amor o la palabra de Dios. En dos casos se refirieron al arte, es decir, enseñar a dibujar y a pintar. Y finalmente decidimos desarrollar en la pizarra la composición que comenzaba: Lo que yo puedo enseñar es historia.

Corrigiendo los errores en las oraciones, pero sin variar sustancialmente lo escrito, rehice la composición en la pizarra para todos. Parecía que todo estaba bien. Sin embargo había un problema crucial. La composición sólo contenía 105 palabras y en el examen exigen como mínimo una cantidad de 250 palabras.

Surgió así la necesidad de que yo ampliara aquella composición y comencé a meterme en cuestiones concretas de la historia de nuestra América. La clase debió terminar a las 9 am, pero vino un cierre por un conteo y  ya no podíamos salir hasta las 10 y 30 que se termina el siguiente turno.

Me pidieron les hablara más de la historia del descubrimiento de América. Improvisé un mapa del mundo y comencé a hablar de los viajes de Colón y la conquista, el exterminio de los indios del Caribe, la llegada de Diego Velázquez y junto a Hernán Cortés que se lanzó a la conquista de México.

Todo condujo a Cuba, cuando llagamos a la particularidad de que mientras ya 1840 todos los pueblos de América habían alcanzado su independencia mientras sólo Puerto Rico y Cuba siguieron siendo una colonia de España. Y ahí vinieron las preguntas que nos llevó a meternos en el complejo tema de la realidad cubana. Yo no quería seguir hablando sobre Cuba. Jamás me gusta en una clase referirme a la realidad cubana.

Y en un momento no quedó más alternativa que hablar sobre los cambios que había traído la Revolución en la vida del pueblo, entre ellos la educación y la salud gratuitas. Y un alumno que seguía pinchando me dijo: Pero, yo prefiero vivir en libertad. No me alteré por su comentario.

Todo lo que hice fue entonces brindar elementos concretos: La Escuela Latinoamericana de Medicina, los médicos y técnicos que brindan servicio en el mundo, las regulaciones de viajes a Cuba, incluida la Ley de Ajuste Cubano y otros. No hay como rebatirlos. Y lo paradójico es que esa persona termino diciéndome si sería posible que su hijo adolescente estudiara en Cuba.

Bueno, en definitiva estábamos allí y ya no era una clase, sino una conversación, que terminó como comenzó con mucho respeto y comprensión de cada opinión. Al final sólo espero que hayan visto con claridad el ejemplo de como una composición de 250 palabras y más es posible, cuando escoges un tema del que puedes hablar con facilidad.
