At the culmination of the year, we are left with the satisfaction of Rene’s definitive return to the homeland, and the impulse that his contribution gives to the campaign for the liberation of the Cuban Five. Several moments during the year have marked milestones in the solidarity work with our cause for our freedom; mentioning for instance without diminishing other significant events, the second Five Days for the Cuban Five held in the U.S. capital, the Colloquium in Holguín, the legal victory obtained when a judge ordered the U.S government to hand over information about payments to journalists that they had refused to make public, the publication of the book “What Lies Across the Water: The Real Story of the Cuban Five”, and the tour of its author Stephen Kimber in several U.S. cities. We must also mention the activities carried out in all parts of the world to commemorate the 15th anniversary of our unjust arrests. These are just some of the important moments of your work throughout the year. These efforts encompass many more countries in every continent. We are deeply grateful for this outstanding work. Today, the case of the Cuban Five imprisoned in the United States is public knowledge and is known about in ruling circles thanks to your work. This pressure is felt thanks to the solidarity of hundreds of thousands of men and women worldwide. Let's welcome the New Year with a renewed impetus, with the same fighting spirit and the same confidence that the truth will triumph. I humbly ask you to decisively support the celebration of the International Commission of Inquiry into the Case of the Cuban Five being held in London, England in early March. Our gratitude to the friends in the United Kingdom and other European countries who dreamed of and organized the event. Let us also give our full support to the celebration in the month of June for the Third Five Days in Solidarity with the Five event in solidarity in Washington DC, organized by the International Committee for the Cuban Five. Let us welcome enthusiastically the initiatives of the National Committee to Free the Five in the United States and all Committees operating in almost every country in the world. To all of you, wherever in the universe you are found and are developing your activities in solidarity, receive our infinite gratitude for another year of your efforts and achievements in the struggle for our liberation. It’s worthwhile to remember that the struggle this year — and all the 15 years of unjust imprisonment — has grown and little by little we are seeing the fruits. Now René is in Cuba, although he will be completely free when all of us are truly free. With him goes the presence of all of us, and our affection and embrace, that because of the injustice, the separation has lasted too long. We have faith and confidence that We Will Win! And one day not too far away, we will be able to greet and thank everyone in person. For that, we should endeavor more, to do better and more in our work until we achieve final victory. I can remember when I first came to the penitentiary in Florence, Colorado, in the middle of a severe winter in 2002. I arrived there carrying a life sentence on my shoulders and soon learned that some inmates called that prison "a cemetery of living men.” Many of the prisoners that I met there were destined to either die in that penitentiary or in some other prison of the federal system. Their chances in a Federal Court of appeals to get a release date were zero and many of these men had already served long periods of time. Violence was a daily part of the routine inside the walls of Florence USP and it was really hard just to find somebody there who was a quiet peaceful person. Almost everyone there had a record of violent acts committed inside or outside the prison walls. An abundance of the prisoners were suffering from some type of mental illness. I still remember some of my conversations with the most veteran prisoners in the penitentiary who told me that when you reach 15 years of time you cross a line when "prison is prison.” They explained that is the time when physical and psychological problems start to appear. We now find ourselves in the 16th year of unjust incarceration and are fortunate that we have no symptoms of disorientation or depression. On the contrary, each day in prison we are more positive and creative; we are more serene and supremely optimistic. I am taking a risk to say it, but it is my sense that never has any prisoner received as many letters as we, the Cuban Five, have, from all around the world during our long imprisonment. It has been an endless flow of letters full of friendship and love. These messages of solidarity have never stopped coming since people learned of our situation back in 2001. This have made the difference and we know that this stream of support and love will not stop until our many friends know that we have all arrived safely back home. We cannot fail to mention that today in Victorville penitentiary, a “cemetery of living men” like that of Florence, our brother Gerardo is serving a cruel and totally unjust sentence of two life terms. His example of firmness, of dignity, of humanity and optimism ought to be present in the daily struggle to overcome this colossal injustice with love, reason and integrity. The hard life that one experiences in prison demonstrates to me that an innocent man, with pure principles, loved by many people will never lose his mind. He will never let his integrity and moral be compromised or broken, and this remains true even if that person is placed in the most isolated cell. As Jose Martí said: "A just principle from the bottom of a cave is stronger than an army.” To you, our eternal gratitude for your immense and constant support that makes us continue to be resistant and makes us feel free. This one has been one of the busiest years for me -- if not the busiest -- mostly the latest months. 2014 will be very interesting, according to what has been in the news lately... 2013 has also been a year of hard work for our comrades of the Committee, and on behalf of the Five and our families I would like to express our appreciation to all of you. We are proud to know that we can keep counting on you for the very important stage our struggle is at. Thank you!!! Estimados amigas y amigos: Arribamos al final de otro año. Ha sido un período de inmensos esfuerzos y de significativos resultados en la lucha por nuestra liberación. Este año que culmina nos deja la satisfacción del regreso definitivo de René a la Patria y el impulso que su contribución significa a la campaña por la libertad de Los Cinco. Han sido varios los momentos que han marcado hitos durante este año en el trabajo de solidaridad con la causa de nuestra liberación. Mencionaremos, por ejemplo, y sin menoscabo de otros significativos acontecimientos, la Segunda Jornada de Solidaridad con Los Cinco celebrada en la capital de Estados Unidos, el Coloquio en Holguín, la victoria legal obtenida con la orden de un juez al gobierno norteamericano para que entregue las informaciones sobre pago a los periodistas, que se negaba a hacer pública, la publicación del libro "Lo que hay del otro lado del Mar: La verdadera Historia de Los Cinco Cubanos" y la gira de su autor, Stephen Kimber, por varias ciudades norteamericanas. No podemos dejar de mencionar las actividades realizadas en todas partes del mundo al conmemorarse el decimoquinto aniversario de nuestros injustos arrestos. Estos son algunos de los momentos significativos del trabajo de ustedes durante este año. El esfuerzo abarca muchos más países en cada uno de los continentes. Por tan destacado trabajo les estamos profundamente agradecidos. Hoy el caso de Los Cinco Cubanos presos en Estados Unidos es de conocimiento público y en los círculos de poder gracias al trabajo de ustedes. La presión sobre dicho círculo se hace sentir debido a la solidaridad de cientos de miles de amigas y amigos en todo el mundo. Recibamos el año nuevo con renovado ímpetu, con el mismo espíritu de lucha y la confianza en el triunfo de la verdad. Les pedimos humildemente que apoyen con decisión la celebración de la Comisión Internacional de Investigación en el caso de Los Cinco Cubanos, que sesionará en Londres, Inglaterra a principios de Marzo. Nuestra gratitud a los Comités Europeos que idearon y organizan este evento. Brindemos también todo nuestro apoyo a la celebración durante el mes de Junio a la Tercera Jornada de Solidaridad con Los Cinco en Washington, D.C., que organiza el Comité Internacional de los 5 cubanos. Acojamos con entusiasmo las iniciativas del Comité Nacional para la Libertad de Los Cinco en Estados Unidos y de todos los Comités que funcionan en casi todos los países del mundo. A todos ustedes, en cualquier parte del universo en que se encuentren y desarrollen su activismo, llegue nuestra gratitud infinita por otro año de esfuerzos y de logros en la lucha por nuestra liberación. Bien vale la pena recordar que la batalla durante el mismo, como en estos 15 años de injusto encierro, se ha incrementado y poco a poco vamos viendo los frutos. Ya René está en Cuba, aunque será totalmente libre cuando todos seamos realmente libres. Con él va la presencia de todos, el cariño y el abrazo que por injusticias, ya se ha alargado demasiado. Tenemos la fe y confianza en que ¡Venceremos! Y que en un día más cercano, podremos saludar y agradecer a todos en persona. René. Ramón Labañino Este diciembre se cumplen 12 años de aquellas largas, brutales e injustas sentencias que nos impuso una Jueza de la Corte de Miami. Recuerdo cuando llegué a la penitenciaria de Florence, el crudo frío invernal de aquel febrero del 2002. Iba con aquella sentencia de vida a cuestas. Ingresaba en lo que algunos reclusos llamaban "el cementerio de hombres vivos". Muchos de los que allí conocí estaban destinados a morir en esa penitenciaria o en cualquier otra prisión del sistema federal. Sus posibilidades en las Cortes de lograr una fecha de salida eran nulas. Algunos ya habían cumplido mucho tiempo encarcelados. La violencia era el pan de cada día dentro de aquellos muros. No era fácil encontrar a alguien que pudiéramos llamar un tipo pacifico, tranquilo. Casi todos arrastraban un hecho violento en su record, fuera y dentro de la cárcel. Personas con desajustes mentales abundaban en aquel lugar. Recuerdo que en algunas conversaciones con los presos más veteranos varios de ellos afirmaban: Cuando se llega a los 15 años es que comienzan a aflorar los trastornos psicológicos y físicos, nadie puede aguantar tanto tiempo, ahí es cuando "la prisión es prisión.” Y, bueno, estamos en el decimosexto año de nuestro cautiverio sin el menor síntoma de locura ni el menor vestigio de pesimismo. Todo lo contrario, cada día estamos más claros y somos más creativos, cada día nos sentimos más optimistas y serenos. Me atrevo a decir que jamás recluso alguno ha recibido la cantidad de cartas que han llegado a nuestras manos desde todas las latitudes del mundo, durante este prolongado encierro; cartas llenas de hermandad y de amor. Esas muestras de solidaridad no se han detenido ni han disminuido desde que se dio a conocer nuestra situación en el 2001 a nuestro pueblo y al mundo. Sabemos que solo cuando los Cinco regresemos a nuestras casas se detendrá esa inmensa ola de solidaridad. No podemos pasar por alto que hoy día en la penitenciaria de Victorville, un "cementerio de hombres vivos" como el de Florence, cumple una cruel y totalmente injusta sentencia de dos cadenas perpetuas nuestro hermano Gerardo. Su ejemplo de firmeza, de dignidad, de humanidad y de optimismo ha de estar presente en la lucha cotidiana por vencer con amor, razón y entereza la colosal injusticia. La ruda prisión nos ha demostrado que un hombre inocente, con convicciones puras, querido por su pueblo y por tantos amigos jamás perderá su cordura ni dejará que se quebranten su integridad y su moral, así lo pongan en la celda más aislada en la que lo puedan poner. Dijo José Martí: "Un principio justo desde el fondo de una cueva puede más que un ejército". Llegue a ustedes nuestro eterno agradecimiento por su apoyo gigante y constante, que nos hace ser resistentes y nos hace sentir libres. ¡Feliz Año Nuevo 2014! ¡Viva la Revolución en su 55 aniversario! Feliz Año Nuevo! Todavía es un poco temprano, pero tu sabes cómo funciona mi correo (o cómo no funciona, mejor dicho…). Esto ha sido uno de los años más concurridos para mi – si no el más concurrido, especialmente en los últimos meses. El 2014 será muy interesante, según los acontecimientos en las noticias… El 2013 también ha sido un año de mucho trabajo para nuestros compañeros del Comité, y en nombre de los Cinco y nuestras familias quiero expresar nuestra apreciación a todos ustedes. Estamos muy orgullosos en saber que podemos contar en ustedes para la etapa muy importante en que se encuentra nuestra lucha. Muchas gracias!!! It was twelve years ago this December when we received from a Miami Judge our long, brutal and unjust sentences.
