Communique from the National Committee to Free the Cuban Five

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

The year 2006 was one of much action and organizing, both nationally and internationally for the Five heroes. In the United States, our committee, affiliates and all supporters worked hard to break through the media blockade, to support the defense in the legal battle, and to mobilize visibility and public awareness. Among the year’s highlights were:

• Mobilizing to fill the Atlanta courtroom with international and national jurists and other supporters for the Oral Arguments hearing on Feb. 14, as well as the press conference and evening forum afterwards;

• Utilizing our Five Freedom Fund, we were able to conduct a media campaign through the spring and summer, building a significant database of journalists who cover Cuba-related issues, and organizing several press conferences on each legal and political development of the Five’s case. This resulted in significant newspaper coverage in the Los Angeles Times, Reuters and Associated Press stories, New York Daily News, Washington Post, and many other newspapers, along with numerous radio and other media interviews about the Cuban Five on many stations;

• The inspiring September 23 march and forum from the U.S. Justice Department to the White House, where we brought together more than 600 people from across the United States to demand the Five's immediate freedom as well as the extradition of  notorious terrorist Luis Posada Carriles. The Sept. 23 organizing campaign, part of the Sept. 12-Oct. 6 international call, resulted in hundreds of new contacts and individuals wanting to get involved.

• Strengthening our collaboration with many current and new international committees on every continent, and working more closely with our Canadian counterparts from Montreal to Toronto to Vancouver. We look forward to more coordinated actions.

• Keeping up the pressure to demand the extradition to Venezuela of the terrorist Luis Posada Carriles or his prosecution by the U.S. government for the 1976 bombing of Cubana flight 455, by holding protests in El Paso at the detention center where he is held, and by linking the anti-terrorist fight of the Five, with the U.S. hypocritical pro-terrorist support of Posada;

• Our ongoing support of the Cuban Five, with visits, logistical support during some of the families’ visits, as well as the solidarity support for our brothers.

• Our website is much improved, constantly updated, and its new features allow other committees to utilize the calendar, and to submit reports on their support work for the Five. Almost everything posted on the website is now posted in English and Spanish, allowing us to reach even more supporters and potential supporters of the Five. Videos and slideshows of the Sept. 23 march, as well as audio of the important speeches delivered at the press conference which preceded the march and at the forum which followed it, were made available on the web where they were viewed and listened to by thousands of people.

• In various cities we organized for the December international campaign honoring the Five's heroic stance at their sentencing, and reached many new people through our efforts, from San Francisco to Colorado. There is much more to be said about all the U.S. support organized in the United States, the many forums and demonstrations by the Cuban progressive community in Miami and southern Florida, and their inspiring donation of almost $30,000 to the Five Freedom Fund; the William Mitchell College of Law presentation by Leonard Weinglass, to almost 400 people, which we initiated along with the school’s NLG chapter and the Minneapolis Committee to Free the Five; presenting the campaign for the five along with Weinglass at the NLG’s national convention, Austin, TX, in October. The National Committee participated and organized events in Los Angeles, Seattle, New York City, Chicago, Santa Barbara, New Paltz NY, Washington DC, Atlanta, and Miami.

Other efforts supporting the Five have included the Popular Education Project’s ongoing campaign demanding that the New York Times cover the case of the Five; the tour of Salim Lamrani’s Superpower Principles, with a forum featuring Noam Chomsky speaking to more than 400 MIT students in Boston; and many initiatives by other organizations.

• The National Committee to Free the Cuban Five has had a constant presence for the Five at the national anti-war marches and rallies, to reach this indispensable audience of progressive activists. Thanks to the support of the ANSWER Coalition, the Five and Cuba have been represented by speakers at the main rallies.

Through all the actions and educational work organized by the Cuban Five's supporters on every continent, the foundation has been laid for stronger and broader efforts for 2007. As we enter the New Year, we share with all our sisters and brothers renewed optimism and determination to expose the United States government’s outrageous imprisonment of Gerardo, Antonio, Ramón, Fernando and René, and will not let up our efforts until they are free.

We will soon announce exciting new projects of our committee. In the meantime, let’s keep vigilant for new legal developments on the current appeals of the Five before the two-judge panel of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta. It is very likely that a decision will come this year on the nine remaining issues that were temporarily set aside by the judges.

The New Year brings optimism and hope for victories in the worldwide struggles for social justice. We extend our solidarity to all those fighting for justice.

As we start a new year, we salute the Cuban people for their economic, social and economic successes in the year 2006 and wish them continued victories for 2007, on this, the 48th anniversary of their Revolution. This is what the Cuban Five are defending, a society where the fundamental rights of health, education, employment, housing, equality and social peace are guaranteed. For Cuban President Fidel Castro, we extend our sincere wishes for a complete recovery.

Estimados hermanas y hermanos:

El año 2006 estuvo cargado de actividades y eventos organizativos para los Cinco héroes tanto a nivel nacional como internacional. En los Estados Unidos, nuestro comité, los afiliados y todos los simpatizantes trabajaron tenazmente para romper con el bloqueo de los medios de comunicación, para apoyar la defensa en la batalla legal y para movilizar la visibilidad y ampliar el conocimiento del público sobre el caso. Entre los acontecimientos más importantes del año se encuentran:

• Movilización para llenar la corte de Atlanta de juristas internacionales y nacionales y otros simpatizantes durante la apelación de los Argumentos Orales del 14 de febrero, así como la conferencia de prensa y el subsiguiente foro en la noche;

• Utilización del Fondo para la Liberación de los Cinco:  Durante la primavera y el verano logramos hacer una campaña informativa en los medios de comunicación , construyendo una significante base de datos de periodistas que cubren temas relacionados con Cuba y organizando varias ruedas de prensa que cubrieron los desarrollos legales y políticos de caso de los Cinco. Esto tuvo como resultado una amplia cobertura en los periódicos como  Los Ángeles Times, Reuters y Associated Press, New York Daily News, Washington Post y otros periódicos, además de numerosas entrevistas radiales en varias estaciones de radio y en otros medios de comunicación sobre el caso de los Cinco.

• La inspiradora marcha y el foro del 23 de septiembre desde el Departamento de Justicia de los Estados Unidos hasta la Casa Blanca donde más de 600 personas de todo los Estados Unidos participaron para demandar la libertad inmediata de los Cinco así como la extradición del notorio terrorista Luís Posada Carriles. La campaña organizativa del 23 de septiembre, que fue parte del llamado internacional entre el 12 de septiembre y el 12 de octubre tuvo como resultado cientos de nuevos contactos e individuos que desean participar en esta lucha.

• Fortaleciendo nuestra colaboración con muchos de nuestros comités internacionales ya existentes como nuevos en todos los continentes y colaborando más cercanamente con nuestras contrapartidas canadienses desde Montreal hasta Toronto y Vancouver. Esperamosteneraunmásaccionescoordinadas.

• Poniendo presión para exigir la extradición a Venezuela del terrorista Luís Posada Carriles o que el gobierno de los Estados Unidos lo enjuicie por el bombardeo en 1976 del avión de Cubana vuelo 455, por medio de protestas realizadas en El Paso frente al centro de detención donde él se encuentra y vinculando la lucha antiterrorista de los Cinco con la posición hipócrita a favor del terrorismo que los Estados Unidos le da a Posada;

• Nuestro continuo apoyo a los Cinco Cubanos con visitas, apoyo logístico durante las visitas de sus familiares, así como también el apoyo solidario a nuestros hermanos.

• Nuestro sitio Web ha mejorado mucho, está constantemente siendo actualizado y sus nuevas características permiten a otros comités utilizar nuestro calendario y entregar reportes sobre el trabajo de apoyo de los Cinco. Casi todo lo que ahora sale en nuestro sitio en inglés, sale también en español permitiéndonos alcanzar muchos más simpatizantes y simpatizantes potenciales de los Cinco. Los videos y los  diapositivas de la marcha del 23 de septiembre, así como discursos importantes pronunciados en las conferencias de prensa que antecedieron la marcha y los discursos realizados después del foro están disponibles en el sitio Web, los mismos que han sido vistos y oídos por miles de personas.

• En varias ciudades organizamos la compaña internacional de diciembre en honor a la postura heroica adoptada por los Cinco en sus vistas de sentencia y logramos atraer la atención de muchas personas nuevas a la causa por medio de nuestros esfuerzos desde San Francisco hasta Colorado.

• Hay mucho más que decir sobre todo el apoyo en los Estados Unidos, de todos los foros y manifestaciones realizadas por la comunidad progresista cubana de Miami y del sur de La Florida y de las inspiradas donaciones de casi $30,000 para el Fondo para la Liberacion de los Cinco; la presentación dada por Leonard Weinglass frente a casi 400 personas en la Facultad de Derecho William Mitchell  que nosotros iniciamos conjuntamente con el capítulo de la escuela del Gremio Nacional de Abogados y el comité de Miniápolis para la Liberación de los Cinco; presentando la compaña de los Cinco conjuntamente con Weinglass en la convención nacional del NLG en Austin, Texas en octubre. El Comité Nacional ha participado y organizado eventos en  Los Ángeles, Seattle, New York City, Chicago, Santa Bárbara, New Paltz NY, Washington DC, Atlanta, Santa Cruz, y Miami.

Entre otros esfuerzos en apoyo a los Cinco incluye la campaña continua llamada Proyecto de Educación Popular demandando que el periódico New York Times cobra el caso de los Cinco, la gira de Salim Lamrani del libro Superpower Principles con un foro presentado por Noam Chomsky a más de 400 estudiantes de MIT de Boston; y muchos otras iniciativas de otras organizaciones.

• El Comité Nacional para la Liberación de los Cinco ha mantenido constante presencia de los Cinco en las marchas y concentraciones contra la guerra para alcanzar esta audiencia indispensable de activistas progresistas. Gracias al apoyo de la coalición ANSWER, los Cinco y Cuba han estado representados por los oradores en varias concentraciones.

Todas las acciones y el trabajo educacional organizado por los simpatizantes de los Cinco Cubanos en todos los continentes han sentado las bases para realizar mayores y más amplios esfuerzos para 2007. Cuando entramos en el Nuevo Año compartimos con todas nuestras hermanas y todos nuestros hermanos optimismo rejuvenecido y determinación para exponer al gobierno de los Estados Unidos el desfachatado encarcelamiento de Gerardo, Antonio, Ramón, Fernando y René, y no nos daremos por vencidos hasta que ellos sean puestos en libertad.

Pronto anunciaremos los emocionantes nuevos proyectos de nuestro comité. Mientras tanto, permanezcamos vigilantes a los nuevos desarrollos legales de las actuales apelaciones de los Cinco frente al panel de dos jueces del Onceno Circuito de la Corte de Apelaciones de Atlanta. Hay grandes probabilidades de que en este año se tome una decisión sobre los nueve asuntos restantes, que temporalmente fueron dejados de lado por los jueces.

El Nuevo Año trae optimismo y esperanza en las luchas mundiales por la justicia social. Extendemos nuestra solidaridad a todos los que están luchando por las causas justas.

Al comenzar el año nuevo, saludamos al pueblo cubano por sus éxitos y logros económicos, sociales y políticos durante el 2006 y les deseamos continuas victorias en el 2007. Felicidades por el 48 aniversario de su Revolución. Esto es lo que los Cinco Cubanos están defendiendo, una sociedad donde se garantiza los derechos fundamentales de salud, educación, empleo, vivienda, igualdad y paz social. Al presidente cubano Fidel Castro le extendemos nuestros más sinceros deseos de completa recuperación.
