On December 3, media organizations in the United States reported about a letter that 66 U.S. senators, including Democrats , Republicans and Independents, had sent President Barack Obama regarding the case of U.S. citizen Alan Gross, who is serving a prison sentence in Cuba . The senators urged the President to grant humanitarian priority to the release of Mr. Gross and to take “whatever steps in the national interest” of the United States, in an expeditious way, to obtain his release, stating that they would show their support in achieving such goal.

In this respect, the Director General for the United States in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, Josefina Vidal Ferreiro, issued the following statement:

"The Cuban government reiterates its readiness to immediately establish a dialogue with the United States government to find a solution to the case of Mr. Gross on a reciprocal basis, and which addresses the humanitarian concerns of Cuba relating to the case of the four Cuban antiterrorist fighters in prison in the United States.

Gerardo Hernández , Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero and Fernando González , who are part of the Cuban Five group, serve long and unjust prison sentences for crimes they did not commit and which were never proved. Their imprisonment has a high human cost to them and their families. They have not seen their children grow, they have lost mothers, fathers and brothers, face health problems, and have been separated from their families and their homeland for over 15 years now.”

Director Josefina Vidal also referred to the statement issued by the Office of the Spokesperson of the State Department on December 2, in which the spokesperson insisted on the immediate and unconditional release of Mr. Gross, arguing that his imprisonment is unjustified, and in connection with this Vidal recalled that:

"Mr. Alan Gross was arrested, prosecuted and sentenced for breaking Cuban laws, in the implementation of a program funded by the government of the United States, aimed at destabilizing the Cuban constitutional order, by setting up illegal and covert communication systems, using non-commercial technology. These actions constitute serious crimes that are severely punished in most countries, including the United States.

Mr. Gross has received a proper and humane treatment since he was arrested.

Cuba understands the humanitarian concerns present in the case of Mr. Gross, but Cuba believes that the government of the United States is directly responsible for his situation and that of his family, and that as such it should work with the Cuban government in finding a solution.

El 3 de diciembre, medios de prensa de Estados Unidos informaron sobre la carta que 66 senadores norteamericanos, demócratas, republicanos e independientes, enviaron al presidente Barack Obama, en relación con el caso del ciudadano estadounidense Alan Gross, quien cumple sanción de privación de libertad en Cuba. Los senadores instaron al Presidente a conferirle prioridad humanitaria a la liberación del Sr. Gross y dar cualquier paso que esté “en el interés nacional” de EE.UU., de manera expedita para lograr su excarcelación, manifestando que le brindarían su apoyo en la consecución de este objetivo.

Al respecto, la directora general de Estados Unidos del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Cuba,Josefina Vidal Ferreiro, emitió la declaración siguiente:

“El gobierno cubano reitera su disposición a establecer de inmediato un diálogo con el Gobierno de Estados Unidos para encontrar una solución al caso del Sr. Gross sobre bases recíprocas, que contemple las preocupaciones humanitarias de Cuba vinculadas al caso de los cuatro cubanos luchadores antiterroristas que están presos en EE.UU.

Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero y Fernando González, quienes forman parte del grupo de los Cinco, cumplen prolongada e injusta prisión por delitos que no cometieron y que nunca fueron probados. Su encarcelamiento tiene un alto costo humano para ellos y sus familiares. No han visto crecer a sus hijos, han perdido a madres, padres y hermanos, enfrentan problemas de salud y han estado separados de su familia y de su Patria por más de 15 años”.

La directora Josefina Vidal también se refirió al comunicado emitido por la Oficina del Vocero del Departamento de Estado el 2 de diciembre, en el cual insistió en la liberación inmediata e incondicional del Sr. Gross, argumentando que su encarcelamiento es injustificado, y recordó:

“El Sr. Alan Gross fue detenido, procesado y sancionado por violar las leyes cubanas, al implementar un programa financiado por el Gobierno de EE.UU., con el objetivo de desestabilizar el orden constitucional cubano, mediante el establecimiento de sistemas de comunicaciones ilegales y encubiertos, con tecnología no comercial. Estas acciones constituyen delitos graves que son severamente sancionados en la mayoría de los países, incluyendo EE.UU.
El Sr. Gross ha recibido un tratamiento decoroso y humano desde que fue arrestado.

Cuba comprende las preocupaciones humanitarias que concurren en el caso del Sr. Gross, pero considera que el Gobierno de EE.UU. tiene responsabilidad directa por su situación y la de su familia, y como tal, debe trabajar con el gobierno cubano en la búsqueda de una solución.
